This is absolutely one of the best TNG episodes so I'm very surprised it didn't get as many good comments. I think I it's great, and I love ST VI too. So it's not just you guys.

I don't think I have seen this episode before. I think this is one episode that I would really have to watch in its entirety before I could form a proper opinion. It seemed like a lot of useful information was missing from the edit, but you can only include so much. I really disliked "The Measure of a Man" for several reasons, including Commander Riker serving as the unqualified temporary bad guy. This episode serves as a sequel to that episode in some ways, so I would probably like the episode better if I haven't watched "The Measure of a Man".
Ellen Bry who played Farallon I remember from 5 seasons of St. Elsewhere, but interestingly it looks like she was also a "stunt double for actress Margot Kidder on Superman (1978)."

OK, so watching a little further, you guys didn't get the reference in Patron Takes. It's a 1980s film starring real-life husband and wife actors Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy (also known for "Driving Miss Daisy"). Basically it's a bunch of aliens/exocomps taking up residence in a New York tenement building that's about four seconds away from being condemned.
Fun film and very relevant to this episide.

As someone working in the field of biology, the more complicated way a lot of people like to say it is they are "part of the biosphere" - that is, part of the living system of earth. But individually can't really do much without something that is itself more alive.

I would have been at a C, but your review gave me a new appreciation for it where it's up to an A.

If you had asked me when I watched it as it first aired, I would have had it as one of my top tier TNG episodes. On rewatching years later, it has slipped a couple notches for me. I still love the story and the direction, but it just doesn't do it for mw as much now

This one has great highs with the characters. Some pivitol moments here with Data and his continuing search to be human. Picard states it best at the end. Strong A

Data mentions viruses being alive. I remember hearing something about this during the COVID situation. "Are viruses alive yes or no? ... Most biologists say no. Viruses are not made out of cells, they can't keep themselves in a stable state, they don't grow, and they can't make their own energy. Even though they definitely replicate and adapt to their environment, viruses are more like androids than real living organisms."
