Showing people just trying to survive in a society where, because of technology, there is no longer a need for many workers. Couple in overpopulation and you see the corner Earth has been backed into, creating a vaguely dystopian, stagnant society with no direction. A lot of the rest was just filler and exposition though. Setting up for the finale.

The guy was showing off how fearless he was by running and throwing himself up against the glass. The glass didn't buckle initially, but he popped the pane out of the frame and he plummeted to a very messy death. Unsurprisingly, he was a lawyer. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Garry_Hoy
