Always loved that wonderful little callback joke to Scotty drinking the alien under the table “it is green” gets a smile every time

The whole first chapter was set 75 years ago, with Scotty struggling with adjusting to retirement and feeling old and useless, and befriending Franklin, a young officer serving on the Jenolen. The later story also included a lot more of the exploration of the sphere itself, with away teams beaming to the inner surface and exploring the abandoned mega-world. Great book!
