OMG! Almost as bad as Mark Twain. Can only get better from here. I hope.

GeorgeReevesSupermanFan

So the cluster of nerves Troi talks about is there, whether or not the technique works..? Barkley episodes are always fun! I'm glad you guys enjoyed this one. In my head cannon, the reason the crew members looked like worms is because they got a full dose of the microbes and that form is what was translated into the transporter. Hold onto your seats gentlemen, this is going to be a fun ride.

Kate Courtney

I love Barclay. One of my favorite part-timers.

Boggle

I don't really care. If I judged people by their politics, I couldn't enjoy anything. 90% of everyone in movies or TV are super leftists which i couldn't disagree with more.

Clyde Frog

Whatever. I'm still not doing it.

startrekiborg

I'm not sure where to tap when I do it so I don't know if it's working for me

Comrade of Chaos

I love that you can hear Geordi enter the room while the camera was one Barclay one level up

Comrade of Chaos

This episode absolutely without equivocation says with its whole chest that there is continuity of consciousness through the matter stream

Comrade of Chaos

Clarke's Third Law states "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" So if they say you have continuity of consciousness through the matter stream then I accept it

Comrade of Chaos

Glasses and plates get put back in the replicator and turned back into energy

Comrade of Chaos

Ya that gets a little old when they keep doing it later on

Derek Orr

Starfleet was tougher in the 23rd century….more snowflake like in the 24th :)

Derek Orr

Barlclay is also a Lt so no

Derek Orr

Why does his rank matter? Like I’m no Barclay fan but it’s kinda odd to be bothered by his rank vs the Chiefs rank

Derek Orr

Unfortunately Dwight has become a right wing conspiracy theorist.

Derek Orr

apparently its real but if it works or not, I dunno. There's food and chemicals that can release endorphins much easier. Coffee for example. With the added bonus of cascading your dopamine.

River Acheron

All of that would be fine if it weren't for the world of Star Trek constantly stating (and in some cases, showing) how difficult and demanding just the Star Fleet Academy is, let alone the fact that you can't have someone on a starship (especially the flag ship) who can't handle stress or emergency situations. If Barclay were a logistics clerk on a star base, I could buy it. But there's no way I'm ever going to buy that he made it through the academy and then made it to the Enterprise.

Nerd's Gold

It's not that Barclay is an idiot, he has some technical skills, he just has severe personality disorders.

paultardspambot .

The Chief is an enlisted man, with the rank of Chief but who has the acting rank of Lieutenant on his assignment as the enterprise transporter chief. So barlcay outranks hims as an officer but wouldnt the rank of acting lieutenant mean practically O'Brien outranks him?

paultardspambot .

yeah, I think all the reasons people don't like him count as spoilers.

paultardspambot .

Holy cow Darmok was already a full season ago. Trek flies when you're having fun!

Evan Guthrie

My daughter was talking to me yesterday about physical moves like plexing for depression and anxiety. Apparently there is a branch of psychology all about this. Science catches up with Trek again.

Crankygrandma

Braga’s done some good trek. And yes, plexing does work. It’s not amazing and lifesaving, but it’s helpful

Crankygrandma

No, but I appreciate the offer

Josh (Target Audience)

I have what I would consider a pretty strong argument that the transporter does not kill people who use it, but it depends on events that happen in a Voyager episode.

Shane Coombs

They don't fold normal space you get moved in subspace

Fishing Trip

Brannon Braga would have had a decent reputation in the community during the time of TNG season 6. His negative reputation developed later.

Shane Coombs

I noticed that too, really well done

Anthony Picard

Would you like someone to edit out those spoiler-filled opening credits? Serious offer. Also, I think most people hate on Brannon Braga because they remember his bad episodes more than his good ones.

GreenCauldron08

This episode contains one of my favorite Data lines of the whole show. "Mr. Barclay seems to be inordinately pre-occupied with his physiological condition." Makes me laugh every time. It's just such a Data thing to say. Love this episode, and I adore Dwight Schultz and his Barclay performances.

Clyde Frog

Wow. Good catch Delusions. Such a glaring omission.

Shanelle

As a Navy veteran, this is very realistic IMO. I had a junior Officer in charge of my workshop who was basically exactly like Barclay. He had no idea how to run an electrician's shop but was stuck being the officer for it somehow. He would have to try to pretend like he knew wtf he was talking about to our Chief and the Chief just rolled his eyes and said yes sir. O'Brien is an enlisted Starfleet man, which makes him lower than every officer. Even Ensign Crusher. Just how all military works bro.

Clyde Frog

Their were Microbes stuk in the matter stream

Scarpad’s Domain

Different song for each

Josh (Target Audience)

The fact that Barclay outranks the Chief just makes me even more disgusted at whoever thought up his character. My distaste for Barclay may be the reason I either never caught or didn't remember that this episode was another plothole-athon. The only thing the writers did well was the story idea and (probably by accident) the reveal of the other crew, but how Barclay got to that conclusion was pretty stupid. Did he really think there was only one microbe? Plotholes aside (Star Trek is full of them), this could have been an acceptable episode if Barclay was the same rank as O'Brien (or lower).

Nerd's Gold

I was happy with my plethora of C grades at school

Worf and Riker Ride Again

I have always enjoyed the "day in the life" kind of episodes-and this one ramps it up using someone that isn't a main character. #CliffBole

Badger

I'm glad you guys noticed the scene where Barclay is making himself paranoid by asking the computer about his 'psychosis'. At first glance it looks like it's a Dutch angle but the camera is actually straight - it's Barclay's head position and the wall picture in the backround that makes it look scewed. My interpretation of this is that Barclay thinks he's going mad but he's actually fine and his symptoms are real.

Worf and Riker Ride Again

To be fair, they were tangling with Romulans. Anything can happen when you add them into the mix.

Paul

"Did anything weird ever happen to you in the transporter, Geordie?" "No, not really... well, except for that time just a few weeks ago when Ensign Ro and I got turned into ghosts for a couple of days." But maybe that wasn't weird for him, it was just Wednesday.

Cinedazed

McCoy beamed down 100% of the time and in just about every episode and movie.

Ken R

I'm somewhere around C+/B- on this one. I did like seeing Barclay again and continuing his arc of overcoming anxiety and being a productive member of the crew. It's a fairly strange episode, but I'm always down to watch it. Focusing more on Barclay and O'Brien and having them bond over their phobias was a nice touch.

Timothy Nikiforovs

Wrong. The transporters scan your body to create a "blueprint" down to the molecular level, then it converts your matter into energy, and transmits both the energy of your being and the blueprint to reconvert you through subspace to the destination - if on another pad, the other pad does it, if not, the transporter converts you back at the arrival coordinates. The quantum state of your mind is maintained by the Heisenberg compensators, allowing a continuance of thought. Now that's where the REAL magic sci-fi happens; the Heisenberg compensators. How it overcomes the Heisenberg Principle, who knows, but it does, and that why you aren't a copy on arrival. If you take apart a piece of IKEA furniture to move it, then rebuild it at your destination, you don't have a copy of your cabinet, it's the same cabinet.

Nolan

I dunno if plexing does Jack, but it js something I occasionally still do when feeling too overwhelmed. Think its psychosymatic at this point. Also, that effect of the "plasma streamer" is the same effect as a red dwarf star bleeding off into a neutrino star from Josh's favorite episode "Evolution" with Dr. Stubbs. Hah! You can't escape his memory.

Nolan

I mean, you could ask the same for McCoy or Pulaski. Plus Barclay did say he hid it up till that point.

Timothy Nikiforovs

Same. I mean I'm sure if you're held in the buffer mid transport before they try to rematerialize your pattern then you're not conscious, but in a normal transport cycle it's like your molecules are being moved bit by bit and for a couple seconds it's like you're in 2 places at once, but everything is still connected through the transporter beam so from your perspective you're still in one piece. Something like that.

Timothy Nikiforovs

It's a completely made up technique but they did some study that said it kinda works (not sure if that was just placebo effect, probably was).

Greg Quinn

An interesting one - never a fave but always watchable, it’s nice to see Barclay back after a long break

Darren Seal

I’m guessing it’s how Barclay perceived them maybe? With his fear of transporters he perceived as monsters/slugs with mouths. If he had see them in the beam as people then the episode would have been over quickly

Jon1701

Thanks for including the MP3 of the S6 theme. Are you going to be doing a different end theme for DS9, or just using the TNG theme through S7, and then switching to a DS9 S3 theme song after TNG ends?

Matt Everkoul

Love this episode. The incremental buildup that leads to an unexpected but fitting solution is great. It's also so nice watching someone wrestle with fear and self-doubt and come out a little stronger on the other side. And everyone is so understanding and supportive. Although I do think it's interesting that Barclay still has O'Brien wake the bridge crew, instead of doing it himself, so he still has some confidence issues there, which feels real. But it's only because of Barclay that the missing crew members were saved, so that's got to be a real self-esteem booster right there!

Ryan Caulfield

We could go further in our points, but it would require spoilers.

startrekiborg

Yes. Not only that, but you'd be dead.

Jovet

Some of us still do it. 😋

Jovet

Actual Star Trek Transporters would kill you, and you certainly wouldn't be conscious the whole time. Realistic "Transporters" would require something like space folding to work.

Jovet

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that it makes sense that it doesn't kill you in the process, but the franchise is saying that it doesn't as far as how it works in universe.

Wrestling With Gaming

I think if anything this episode makes it clear that you not only don't die, you're conscious the whole time during transport. I'm not saying that it makes sense that you don't die, I'm saying that the franchise itself is telling us that on star trek that's not what happens. There's a couple other small examples that add to evidence that you don't die when transported but they're in other series so I won't get into it. This is the most explicit evidence of not dying during transport anyway

Wrestling With Gaming

I always point to this episode whenever I see people online claim that the transporters on star trek kill you. Not only is it established in canon that they don't kill you, you don't even lose consciousness as seen here. Also, I'm glad to see you guys have been doing skits the last few episodes. Love them

Wrestling With Gaming

I love that you are doing your Intros again. I really enjoy them.

ThorE

You can't put too much logic into this episode. If you're broken down to your individual molecules, there's no way you'd be able to see anything, you'd have no eyes. You need to shut your brain off and say it works because of....reasons. I still wouldn't get in that thing.

startrekiborg

This is the episode that throws a wrench into that setup- we see that you're awake during the whole process and experience it as an uninterrupted light show. How it works- who knows, just somehow it does!

Nathan Koga

If we saw that all cadet candidates have to go through psych tests to overcome their fears, and only the best survive starfleet, how on earth is a guy who is deathly afraid of transporters even on the ship?

Ken R

I don't think they do - at least not in any of the "classic" series, but I still reject the idea that you are dying each time. I have a very, very long overview of why that is, but even a short version of the same analysis would be based off of something we see happen in an episode several years beyond where they are at now and so for now I will have to hold off.

Shane Coombs

i believe they actually address that theory at some point and claim it has been proven that they are not being cloned/duplicated but actually just moved

TivAcrid

Yes! Or they could try Tall, Grande, Venti, or Trenta, mostly because no one's quite sure what they mean.

Jeff

Pleasantly surprised that you guys enjoyed this one.

Spencer Loften

While I thought the floating puppet aliens looked kinda off, I always tend to enjoy Barclay episodes.

Firekrys FWO

I was hoping TA would switch for this season to USDA criteria of prime, choice and select

DG

I wouldn't transport either. You are literally dying and an exact copy is made at the other end each time.

startrekiborg

the sound editing is great in this episode. every room has a different background sound/noise.

Redjac

I also like that when Barkley brings some crazy idea to the captain .. wakes his ass up early in the morning , Picard is like cool I trust my people .. take that shit apart lets figure out whats up. no more oh its just crazy dude thoughts at all.

Lt Dan I scream

Trust that we will not

Josh (Target Audience)

It's only a short matter of time now before Alex is ready to take on the role of Samuel Clemens

DG

Josh made a mention of a game on the table that Barcly sat next to. When I first saw these episodes when they aired. I noticed that as background props they featured a lot of games you could order from a catalog at the time. The catalog was called the Sharper Image. I don't know if it is still available I'll Google it later... just Googled it, it dose still exist.

Keith S

Brilliant Barclay episode which is great fun. Great moments from the Chief. Definite S

jon bolton

“An A grade? Wow you guys are just too jaded for me!”

Josh (Target Audience)

Great episode, but don’t think about the science aspect of it too much… 😉

Ron Hubbard Jr

THIS is where season 6 begins as far as I’m concerned!

Ron Hubbard Jr

I'm glad you're not inclined to give a letter grade for each episode anymore. It spares us those comments like, "You only gave it an A+?!?!? Why did you hate it so much????"

Jeff

I think everyone tried plexing after this episode

Jason Lallathin

Why did they look like worms? My head canon is that you can't see the people, but you can see the microbes inside the people since they were also 'infected'.

#MaxwellDidNothingWrong

Oscar worthy performance to Alex in the opening skit. #SignthisMan

Christopher Dorn

*one of us chant ensues*

Josh (Target Audience)

This is another one of those episodes I never gave a second thought to in the past, but I completely forgot the cool surprise ending and that boosted the entertainment value in my mind. Once again, this is why I enjoy going on this journey with you guys.

David Wayne Fox

The beginning skit was the best so far, hilarious!

D Jammers

If transporting turns your body's matter into energy, which is what gets transported and then rematerialized at the destination, wouldn't that mean you should be unconscious during the part where you're pure energy?

Forbidden Donut

A episode for me. Good use of Barclay and O’ Brien and their interactions. Nice tie-in of the A and B plots.

Collin Freeman

Gotta love the TNG writers making the audience insert character be a socially awkward, porn addicted hypochondriac. Not totally unfair lol

EnigmaticPenguin

Alex had a Barclay moment?

Collin Freeman

The thumbnails for the uncut reactions are always perfect. 😂👏

Alan F

That s6 theme absolutely bangs. Make it SOOOOOO *transitions to music*
