Not much to do about anything. The nurse at the beginning of the movie was Irwin Alan's wife. The song, morning after became a hit song after this movie was realesed..

Keith S

Did you guys see the credit for Alexander Courage, if Star Trek TOS theme song fame? 😁

tyranusfan

You’d think the fire in the engine room would have eaten up all the oxygen in the air pocket…

tyranusfan

I was with them until they got to the point where they had to swim. That was a bridge to far

tyranusfan

A classic disaster movie from which I recall as a kid adoring Pamela Sue Martin and always remember Shelley Winters swimming. How awful that Gene Hackman's life ended in such an awful way RIP

AzoriusMage

So we need A Bridge Too Far and French Connection next

AzoriusMage

It’s cool that the ship is still at the Smithsonian in dc

Lt Dan I scream

Yeah...the whole "higher-authority pressuring the ship to go faster" trope seems to have been lifted, or at least inspired by this film. From what I've read there is no evidence that Ismay pressured Captain Smith to go faster.

David Wayne Fox

Leslie Nielsen was a serious dramatic actor for decades until he did Airplane! and everyone discovered that he was the best straight man for comedy.

Aramis Calcutt

I bet James Cameron studied this movie hard prior to making Titanic.

Patrick Smith

That was a fun watch with you. Thanks guys! I was a wee lad when I went with my parents to the theater to watch this.. The 2 things I remember are the song "The Morning After" and I think this is the movie it clicked in my brain that a character sacrificed themselves to save others..and it really stunned a young, impressionable me.. Side note: it's easy to tell if they are using miniatures in a movie with almost any scene in water because: while they can make the models small, they can't make water drops miniature. So that is always the giveaway Unless it's CG water which-is getting better..sooo close now.. Star Trek Related Trivia: Sally Kellerman AKA 'Walking Freezer Unit' turned down the role of Linda Rogo. Composers in the running to score the movie included Jerry Goldsmith --- Shelley Winters who was nominated for an Academy Award for this picture, gained 35 pounds for the part of Belle Rosen. Afterward, she complained that she was never able to get back to her original weight, no matter how hard she tried. She also trained with an Olympic swimming coach so that Mrs. Rosen would come across as a natural in the water. https://www.jaysclassicmovieblog.com/post/37-the-poseidon-adventure-1972

Shelly Winters was a world class Broadway actress from the early 40s, and appeared in many films including an Oscar in 1960. For me, she stole the show by bringing her character to life which is rare for an Irwin Allen film.

Michael Metrick

Always liked this movie. I am a plus size woman and it always impacted me that Mrs. Rosen (another plus size lady) had her heroic moment and saved everyone with her swim. I think they imply that she hasn't been very active in a long time so the exertion of this was just too much for her. At any rate, I don't watch this often but it is a gem in my book.

Kristina Weber

All I really know/remember about this film (a bit before my time) is the song "The Morning After" which was soundly ridiculed on South Park in S03E03's "The Succubus".

Jovet

Trek connection: Pamela Sue Martin (Susan) played Joan Collins (Edith Keeler COTEOF) daughter on 80’s Dynasty. She was also one of my first kid crushes as “Nancy Drew” in the 70’s show of the same name.

Glenn Johnson Barnes

I havent seen this movie for a lonnnnng time. Prof Moff is there a porking score for this? lol just kidding I guess Gene Hackman was still alive when ya guys watched it as no mention of his recent passing

Narnman

Red Buttons, the little guy coddling the blonde, Rogo, Belle and Manny were all along with Hackman Oscar winners. I don't think the audiences back then thought he was going to have to carry that group. Belle was a two time winner in fact, and got a nom for this movie too. Great film, it's natural companion to watch is "Towering Inferno". If a person likes this they almost assuredly will like that.

This was a real blockbuster when it came out and practically launched the disaster movie trend of the 1970's. On The Tonight Show, Gene Hackman told Johnny Carson that they already pitched a sequel to him which he turned down. Basically, he said it starts at the end of the first one, with the survivors boarding the helicopter. When they are in the helicopter, the pilot turns around and shows that he looks just like Reverend Scott. It turns out to be Reverend Scott's brother. Eventually, a sequel did come out, with none of the original cast and... sank. A big model in an outdoor tank was done for the exterior shots. There was a shot filmed of the ship finally sinking after the helicopter leaves, but it was felt it was not good enough. You can google for a still frame of it.

Mike Rogers

Just like all those times where you talk about something while you’re watching Star Trek and they go and do it like they were listening to you in the past today did you feel that there’s a weirdness to the cosmic connection to the moment you chose to watch this and film it and his passing before releasing the video to us Somehow he was a great actor and this is a great homage to that actor. I’m not sure of which actors may still be alive. I’m pretty sure only Pamela, Sue Martin, and the kid whose name I have no idea of.

Thicketdweller

Great movie. Gene Hackman didn't really give it much credit though. I believe he said at one point he simply did this movie for the money grab. I'm not a bridge crew member, but if I was - Mississippi Burning, The Way of The Gun and Network would be 3 i'd have to decide between to drop in your movie bucket.

I was six years old when I saw this movie on the way to school where I went to school for a week at a time and it was the Sunday afternoon showing before I got dropped off for my weeklong Stinson school and the movie stayed with me and I talked about it with the kids in school who hadn’t seen it but all of them enjoyed the way I told the story to them and I found out I had a bit of storyteller in me at that age This is definitely the best version of this movie and deserves it’s accolades

Thicketdweller

Towering Inferno was the one I was thinking of. Pretty much anything from Faye Dunaway (1970s) for that matter you cant go wrong.

penoyer79

I really like enemy of the state, but it’s incomplete if you don’t watch the conversation

Thicketdweller

There were actually two remakes that came out a year apart (2005/2006). And you should look at more of the 70s disaster movies like Earthquake and Towering Inferno (both also with John Williams soundtracks).

RoToRa

Red Buttons was the one power walking. He was pretty famous pryor to 40 years ago My grandmother said she know him.

First movie I ever saw in a theatre as a kid when I was 7! It totally blew my mind. It also began my lifelong admiration for Gene Hackman. They don’t and can’t make them like this anymore!

Jonathan Llyr

A YouTube channel that breaks down marine disasters, broke down the events of this movie as an April Fools joke a while back. https://youtu.be/tjFg7NkBGn4?si=BgcX1tl2eq2JsKl-

I love the 70s disaster films. Take a bunch of Oscar winners and put them in a disaster with plenty of character details and a huge budget for set and effects.

Jonathan

The lookout : "Surely that wave is not that big."............ Captain : "It is that big..... and don't call me Shirley"

Prof Moff

Well I jumped right on this one and enjoyed watching it with you guys! I had a feeling you would like it, simply because the characters are people that you care about, unlike many of the disaster films of the seventies which like Josh said are more about spectacle. The Towering Inferno comes close, but this one is the crown jewel of this genre for my money. What a set! Can you imagine they spent the money to build an upside down men's room and then just show it for a few seconds with Robin glancing around looking for a place to pee? Great visual gag. I love everything about this one... the John Williams score is the icing on the cake. By the way Josh, it is available on a really nice blu-ray.

David Wayne Fox

Great movie, haven't seen this video yet but if you don't love this then we need to speak to your parents to find our where they went wrong!

Ken R

YYYEEEESSSSS! A favorite of mine. But I am prepared if you hate it LOL

Mike Rogers

Enemy of the State is my all time favourite Hackman movie, but this is a close second.

James Knight

Why ya'll always be picking the most dadcore movies ever made.

kevin coleman

I loved this movie as a kid! I haven't rewatched it as an adult so I'll enjoy revisiting it with you!

Elizabeth N

Unforgiven is not easily forgettable. I think one of you are thinking of the wrong movie.

startrekiborg

This is getting interesting

startrekiborg

I have footage of him watching it - Josh

Josh (Target Audience)

All the more reason

startrekiborg

I have not seen it - Alex

Josh (Target Audience)

Alex has seen it, but maybe I’ll give it a watch

Josh (Target Audience)

Someone really needs to pick "Unforgiven".

startrekiborg

First saw this as a little kid back in the 80s. My favorite Gene Hackman role ever, in which there's some tough competition. Still watch it every New Years.
