PATRON TAKES - TNG S6E7

TAKES WILL BE READ 4/3

Comments

I get your point, on paper it sound even worse, but you can’t polish a turd

Worf and Riker Ride Again

Yeah, the flagship of the Federation, with like 1000 people on board, is taken over by 6 Ferengi in a couple of old Klingon ships…

Worf and Riker Ride Again

That whole scene should have been cut. And burned with fire.

Worf and Riker Ride Again

That D is very generous!

Worf and Riker Ride Again

Oh boy. I had to try and watch this episode in two attempts, it was a hard watch. You can see this discomfort on the faces of everyone involved.

Worf and Riker Ride Again

Sure, it's a total plot convenience that the Ferengi are able to take over the Enterprise - especially so easily. But if you put that aside, I love this concept. I guess this episode is one of my guilty pleasures. I know it's a little silly but I love it. Lots of classic moments for the characters as well as a unique concept where they are forced to approach the situation in a way totally outside of what they would normally do. And I love the way it explored the concept of "second childhood" in a way no other show has managed to do.

L J

This one is a bit silly, but not one I want to skip when it comes up. I would never recommend it to others, but I can't help but recalling specific scenes from it years later. It's a suspend your belief and enjoy the fun episode.

thesocialshift

I have to give credit to the writers for making the kids dialogue sound just like the adults would in the situation, especially Picard and Guinan, but also, they could have NOT done this premise to begin with. It's thankfully not boring, but between the very awkward Keiko scene and the contrived conflict, I can't give it higher than a low C.

cricketlenny

I don't consider this episode fun but it's entertaining in a "so bad, it could be worse" kind of way.

Jovet

Moore was right.

Jovet

The Ninth Doctor

I'm just trying to decide if three 20 year-old Birds of Prey can be a match for the Federation flagship... the Galaxy Class USS Enterprise no less..? 🤫

The Ninth Doctor

This was a spec script purchased by Michael Piller, and was assigned to Ron Moore for an uncredited rewrite. Ron absolutely hated the entire premise and tried to get the whole episode scrapped, but was told to do the rewrite anyway. Add to that a director's first time doing Trek, some child actors who were in over their heads, child labor laws that limited how many takes could be performed, and you get this episode, for better or worse..

Archangel42

I love this flaming pile of garbage for an episode. It’s so bad but so fun. I’m sure someone else has mentioned that young Picard is the same actor as played his nephew a few seasons back but if they somehow didn’t there you go. One thing I’ve always thought about with this episode is the ending. They don’t lose their intellects. If I randomly woke up tomorrow as my teenage self I’m not so sure I’d take the cure. A do over with all my prior experience might be tempting.

Strife

he's screwed no matter what

For reasons that have never been explained, the dialog by Isis Carmen Jones (young Guinan) was overdubbed for the entire episode. This is the fourth time something unusual has happened to Ro. So this episode was fine. We got to see the lead Frengie trying to be a pirate/villain.

empirejeff

I recently discovered Ron Moore's thoughts on this episode, and it gave me a good chuckle. Quote: "When Michael bought the premise I thought he was completely insane: An Away Team rematerializes on the transporter as child -- with adult minds! I tried again and again to bury this idea, which of course meant that I would get saddled with the inevitable rewrite when the script came in. I just thought it was a ludicrous idea and wanted nothing to do with it. That said, once I got the assignment, the professional writer in me had to commit to the material and do the best with it that I could, so I tried very hard to bring humor and humanity to the proceedings, chiefly through the Guinan/Ro story that I did end up liking in the end. I still cringe when I think of the episode (the Ferengi capture the Enteprise in a couple of broken down Bird of Preys???) but many people have told me how much they like it." - Ronald D. Moore

awktopus

It’s an OK episode but I wish they’d given the Ferengi the Marauder instead of Birds of Prey. I always like that design.

Matthew McKinnon-Gray

Really like that Episode. A lot of awkwardly funny stuff with the problem beeing not themselfes. Very good Childactors in my book. That these than also have to rescue the Enterprise is fun to watch. Did I mentioin i like it a lot? S for me.

ComMix

I don't know if I'd call this episode "good", but it's enough fun that I always stop in to revisit it on rewatch. The child actors do a decent job with a couple of genuine laugh-out-loud moments and Ro has a nice arc. But ugh, the Ferengi plot...

North

I think this one tends to be looked down upon, but I always liked it. I'd give it a B. It's not great, and there are some annoying elements, including the simple fact that I just don't find the Ferengi's takeover of the ship to be believable. The guest child actors are not great and border on grating at times, though Alexander's actor comes through looking fairly strong as a result. One cool thing is that they cast the same actor to play Picard as played his nephew in Family. I do like that choice, though while he is probably the best of the guest child actors he is also much too stiff - something that is highlighted by the fact that he gets so much screen time. I hate to be critical of stuff like this, but it is unfortunately the reality of the episode and it is one of its weaker points. Still, the episode is not exactly bad, and it does have a handful of decent moments. My favorite part is probably when Riker pull one over on the Ferengi, which is a rare example in this episode of not only competence from the main cast but extreme confidence.

Shane Coombs

Ro's story arc in this episode is the best part. Overall, it's just okay, but her never having a real childhood and wanting to stay a kid for a bit longer really gets you in the feels.

Justin B

If you suspend your disbelief, this one's quite fun. I like most of the kid actors, especially Guinan, and there are some good moments. As a kid, I loved it.

Elizabeth N

I think i'm in the minority, but i really love this episode. For me it's a fun one, definitely worthy of S, but i wouldn't be surprised if you guys hate it, and i won't think less of you.

jon bolton

The absolute, hands down, best episode of TNG to rag on for how utterly ridiculous and nonsensical it is. E-Tier. Number one dad my ass.

Cobheran

I just have mixed feelings of 'fun' and 'meh' with this one. It wasn't until just recently I learned that the actor playing Young Picard is the kid who previously played his nephew, which is kind of a neat detail.

Forbidden Donut

When I think about it objectively, I feel like I should hate this episode. But I just don't, for some reason I can't help but enjoy it.

TomEmilioDavies

I have a soft spot for... the kid stuff, weirdly enough. The part that I HATE is the Ferengi takeover of the ship. Leave Riker and Worf in charge, and four idiot renegade Ferengi immediately take over and pacify the flagship. God, Riker, you suck, though you DO get credit for boring one of the Ferengi to obliviousness with that absolutely magnificent stream of technobabble BS. When I asked at the end of S5 what character wasn't living up to potential and named Riker, THIS is the episode I was thinking of. The four kids are all really good, especially the ones playing Picard and Guinan.

Ian Westcott

UGGGGGGGGGGGGGH. Child episode. C or D tier.

SetsunaYuki

You either have to accept the absurdity of this episode and enjoy it for that, or you won’t like it. Where else in televised storytelling can you turn your characters into kids and see what happens?! Captain Nephew isn’t bad and it’s fun to see him with his “number one dad”. But it’s really kid Ro and Guinan who steal the show. Always loved the ending where we don’t see Ro changed back. Pass the royal blue is such a sweet moment. A for “absolutely ridiculous and awesome.”

Column Meanie

Riker has his own Fizzbin moment like Kirk in "A Piece of the Action". A silly episode with a lot of plot holes but it doesn't make me like it any less. I rank it as "Enjoyable".

KatWithAttitude

The take-back-the-ship part was very 90s home alone, which I was never a fan of. But I enjoyed the character moments with the child actors. I think they did a good job. I identified with Ro because I also didn’t have a happy childhood, so I understand her feelings. And they wrapped her episode arc well enough.

Sainjl

Yeah little Ro was ok, but little Guinan was awful. Like you said she may have been overdubbed, but that bed jumping scene felt like she has been assimilated by the Borg.

Marko

"I'm here to tell you right now, I don't care."

Evan Guthrie

Three of the four kid actors were great in their roles

Crankygrandma

I absolutely love this one. The Keiko actress was a little weak but the other child actors were perfect. The Ferengi are now the Ferengi. This episode makes it so. I love the guinan/ro stuff, especially with the kid versions. Jonathan Frakes is great in that scene where he is fooling the Ferengi. This episode is loads of fun. I give it an S not because it’s objectively an outstanding episode but because it’s a personal favorite. The only weak spot is the Keiko stuff. I’m not sure how you will rate it as you aren’t wild about kids. But there’s great character stuff I think you will like. I’ll predict a B from you, though I’m iffy about it.

Crankygrandma

Yeah, that's a little too wholesome for my taste. For that kind of sentimental 'awww" writing I can turn on The Bradys or The Waltons or whatever.

Ken R

Blame the transporter for Molly. Just like her mother.

Jovet

And TA are going to hang on every word! LOL!!

Jovet

SOMEWHAT contrived??

Jovet

"Young-Guinan" did just fine.

Jovet

Guinan had to teach Ro how to BE a child, since she had to grow up quickly and never was one.

Jovet

This is bottom 5 of TNG I think. @Marko The children were fine. I think young-Guinan was overdubbed though.

Jovet

This episode is ridiculous and stupid and not well thought out, and I don't care for it. And the more I think about it, the less I like it.

Jovet

Meanwhile, O'Brien's secret dream come true?

Jovet

I think this is my Season 6 🙄 episode. Shatters my suspension of disbelief. I do not enjoy this one. I like young-Guinan's actress. But the solid floor has been replaced by shrinking clothes. What should be in a museum is in Picard's grip case. What happened to Picard's artificial heart? Did it just disappear? The Ferengi just take over the ship with no effort? Last but not least, this episode discovers the secret to rejuvenation and seemingly endless life. It should revolutionize the lives of all Federation citizens. Will it?? "Now! Now! Now! Now! Now!" "You were a jumper, alright." "D" grade

Jovet

I have a massive soft spot for this episode, it's a B for me, it's funny. Fun fact; the kid playing young Picard is the same actor who played picard's nephew back in Family; and he does a fantastic job of capturing Patrick Stewart's mannerisms

Jonathon Tsagris

How is Guinan more of a Goat as a kid ?!🤣 who would have thought that in an episode full of kids, the ferengi are the worst thing? 🤣🤣 Low key Banger, but I can’t give you a reason why lol.

Sixto

This is E tier garbage and I love it. Also, Riker's fall from grace is nearly complete.

Loot Narsbaar

I absolutely agree, that boarding was even less believable than turning them into kids of the same age. I would think that even if they made Worf into a kid (which they didn't), he would still be able to lead a security team to prevent a Ferengi boarding party. And then the kids defeat them later.

Marko

Omg … but that was really awkward

Shanelle

Anyone going to comment on the writers almost putting the Chief on a list? "No no Colm, you see it's totally ok because ACKCHYUALLY..."

#MaxwellDidNothingWrong

My favorite part of the episode 😂

Shanelle

How many times has Trek discovered a cure for aging? Only for a later episode to have a character hand wringing about getting old and mortality? Oh well....also terrible security job in having the ship taken over by a bunch of low IQ frengis.

Greg Quinn

B - It grows on you This is a failed episode on paper that succeeded on the screen Think about it: - Not just one child actor but FIVE - Their adult equivalents will be written out (including your lead) - The children will have the most lines, and must carry both the A and B plots That is a disaster on paper! Yet somehow it gets pulled off. Suspend disbelief on the wacky Ferengi ship-jacking for a second. Picard's child actor comes off as Picard, I believe him. Same for Guinan, Ro, and Keiko. Dworf even does a good job playing off the other child actors! This is a triumph of acting. Of child acting! If you can allow yourself to get past the premise, there is a lot to love here. But boy is it asking a lot, and no shade thrown at those who checked out and never returned.

#MaxwellDidNothingWrong

Oh you're gonna love this one! BTW we want 3 episodes a week, and we want them now.... now, now, now, now, now, now, now!

Marko

Yeah the kids were not very good. But I think the kid who played Picard did a fairly good job at emulating Picard's mannerisms.

Marko

Hail, hail, another kid show. Call the angel, we will go. Far away, for to see, this episode sucks so not far enough for me

Badger

I had just turned 12 a week before this episode aired, so I was the same age they were supposed to be. And I absolutely loved this episode. Still do, but I often wonder if it's through nostalgic eyes.

David Brown

High 'A' or even low 'S' for me. I hope y'all enjoy it enough to give it a B or C but don't have high hopes. It's got child guest stars, Ferengi, and broad comedy. All things you've hated in the past. But I'm lousy at predicting your reactions, maybe you'll love it as much as I do.🤞

Cirk Bejnar

Sssh ssshhhh

Evan Guthrie

Wow! Is this the most divisive episode of all of Star Trek, or what? (Just asking rhetorically)

Moonlander

LOL

Evan Guthrie

This episode is ridiculous and stupid... and I LOVE it! Maybe it's because I was the age of these kids when I first saw it, but I've always enjoyed this episode.

Russell Elledge

UGH. So bad. Flawed on every level. It’s difficult to believe this one got made. Insufferable. You guys will love it!

tyranusfan

For me, this is one of the worst episodes of the entire series. I hate it! The kid actors, the concept, the... The other two worst offenders are in season 7.

Scott Reeves

"He's my number one dad" is now and forever the greatest line in the history of television.

Ally Roth

Lil Guinan actress also played Lil Dolores in Sister Act, once more playing a young version of a Whoopi Goldberg character 😉

The Ninth Doctor

One of many, *many* handwaves needed to make this plot work 👍🏼

The Ninth Doctor

The kid playing Picard did well but that crap with Guinan and Ro jumping on a bed and playing was a waste of time. The bit with the Chief and his wife could have been interesting if on a show for adults, this clearly isn't. Too many freaking kids on this show. It makes an often mediocre show worse.

Ken R

I really like this episode. The child actors here are pretty good overall IMO, and it's fun if not spectacular.

Paul O'Neal

Extremely silly episode, but some great moments with Guinan and Ro and young Picard was great. C

Ron Hubbard Jr

The one thing they seemed to forget about in this one is Picard's artificial heart. When he got youthened, he should have died.

Darin Wagner

Members of our crew turned into child actors, I'm sure you guys'll be enthralled. Regardless, they all do fairly okay, and as ridiculous as a Ferengi take over is, clearly this is supposed to be a more humorous episode, Riker and Child-Picard getting stand out moments. And poor Chief, brought back for this awkward-ass storyline.

Nolan

The only thing good about this episode is the performance of baby Picard. That young actor nails it.

Aramis Calcutt

Young Picard played by the same kid who played Picards nephew in "Family". Silly episode but overall kinda fun. I always wnjoyed the comedy bit with Riker and his "son" trying to bluff the Ferengi. C tier.

Alexander McKechnie

Prediction: You'll find this episode charming, the child actors are great, and the Ferengi are actually a decent villain for once. ... Yeah, nah, this episode sucks.

Martin S

The adventures of Young Picard. I didn't mind this one

Jason Lallathin

I like the sort-of callback to “The Counter-Clock Incident” from TAS.

James H

This is a very silly premise done very well. I actually have more issue with the Ferengi taking over the ship than the Magic Transporter. The kid actors are all good to great. B.

John M.

Episode is a bit silly, but a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. Good casting choice using the kid who played Picards nephew to play Picard as a boy.

Keith S

Yes, this episode is very silly. Yes, it’s difficult to believe the Ferengi could take over the Enterprise so easily. I don’t care. I love this episode. It's very fun, and the child actors they got do a great job imitating the mannerisms of the characters - really a big step up from most of the child performances we’ve seen on the show.

Steven Linden

I'm 50/50 on whether you'll absolutely hate this one or just lose yourself in the absurdity of it. But God damn the Ferengi are ruthless here. Straight up threatening to execute a bunch of kids. When Riker is bullshitting about the computer, it's one of several times throughout the series that Frakes covertly gave the camera the middle finger. Was it intentional? Who knows.

Timothy Nikiforovs

I also strongly dislike it but man...there are worse offenders, haha

Darin Starr

I cannot WAIT for the excited reaction followed by the fading of hopes - starting with such a cool group of characters that we love only to realize that those actors will be OUT of the episode after the hook. I predict y'all will hate this with a burning passion. I can't argue.

Darin Starr

Fun episode, with some cringe, some great kid actors

Paul Rymer

Ah yes my guilty pleasure episode, if episodes were categorised by themes this one being in the “fun” section it would be in my top 5 fun episodes. He’s my number 1 dad! 🤣

LonghillAndy

I actually really like this one. I especially like the character moments between Guinan and Ro. Plus I like all of the fun goofy kid stuff. It's a reminder to not take things so seriously all the time. Sometimes we can actually solve our problems better if we looked at it from the point of view of a kid.

BN13

This one... The actors that play lil' Picard and Ro are excellent. The actress that plays lil' Guinan has to unfortunately compare to Woopie Goldberg's usual great performances. Lil' Keiko's performance falls a bit flat to me, but fortunately her interactions with O'brien is intentionally uncomfortable. The plot to this episode does all the wrong things, but somehow comes across somewhat enjoyable. Guilty C rating from me.

Nathan Walker

I despise this episode. The concept is rotten to the core and the kid playing Picard is awful. I know we can’t compare him to PS but a terrible idea from start to finish. This may be the worst episode of all TNG.

Jon1701

C+ for fun but cringe. So. Much. Handwaving... to make this work. The biggest issue surely is that somehow, three 20 year-old Birds of Prey can be a match for the Federation flagship... the Galaxy Class USS Enterprise no less?? 🤫 But *if* you can get past that, it's a great laugh. Directed by Adam Nimoy, young Picard literally stamping his feet in a tantrum, young Guinan played by the same actress playing young Delores from "Sister Act", and four and a half meddling kids saving the day, its fun times. And something light hearted isn't so bad once in a while, right..? Right?? **crickets**

The Ninth Doctor

Make it stop, I don't like it.

Wade MacKinnon

The funniest part of all that to me is that scene, like all of TNG, had to be "word perfect" matching the script so Frakes had to memorize the fake technobabble

THE LORE!!!

Don't forget the redundant melacortz-ramistat 14-kiloquad interface modules... or the firomantal drive unit! It controls the ramistat core and keeps the ontarian manifold at 40,000 KRGs, of course. Love that Riker hangs such a big lampshade on the technobabble... 🤣

The Ninth Doctor

This episode is goofy and fun but I’m not sure you guys will be very receptive to it. The plot feels somewhat contrived but I really honestly don’t care. The awkward scene with Miles and Keiko is brilliant though.

Evan Guthrie

I’ve never liked this one that much -I am all for silly episodes but the I’ve always disliked the Kid actor who played Picard here to the point where it’s too distracting. Love the totally random group in the shuttle tho

Darren Seal

A bit of silly fun, though nice for Laren to get some character development, though kind of skipping over that transporters can make people IMMORTAL IS KINDA A BIG THING!

Thomas Cole

You guys are gonna hate this one. Yeah that’s Rene Picard’s actor.

Phil Ken Sebben

Ok..it's a dumb kid episode, but how awesome is Riker's technobabble gibberish distraction scene? "Now, you do know what a bilateral kelilactiral is?"

THE LORE!!!

A lot of people don't like this one but I think it's great. I can appreciate Star Trek's occasional silly episode. And some of the kids did a pretty good job of portraying another actor's character.

Regan

Everybody is so concerned about Picard, Keiko, Ro, and Guinan being transformed into children that they failed to notice that Molly O'Brien - who was only born a year ago in-universe time - has suddenly become a couple of years older... And she doesn’t even have the excuse of being mostly Klingon like Alexander either.
