PATRON TAKES - TNG S6E6

TAKES WILL BE READ 3/20

Comments

I think this is probably the worst Q episode. In some ways that title might go to Hyde and Q, which is also not so great, but what that episode had the really gives it the advantage is that at least it wasn't boring. I think this episode is incredibly boring. It's an easy skip for me if I see it on somewhere, and when I introduced my wife the the franchise and we watched through all of the 5 "classic" series I think we may even have skipped it. The concept of the episode itself is a good one in a vacuum - what if someone found out they were omnipotent? How would they handle it? The thing is that Star Trek has already done that concept many times, going all the way back to Where No Man Has Gone Before others - and they have even already done it WITH Q in Hyde and Q. This is a slightly different take on it - the person with the power is not a fully grown, mature man, but essentially a teenage girl who is coping not only with her newfound powers but also with the normal teenage/early 20s type stuff - but it's just not enough to save it for me because I just find it so relentlessly boring. I'd give it a D if we are talking about my own enjoyment of it, or a C if I tried to rate it taking my own personal biases out of the picture.

Shane Coombs

I think the Q continuum is lucky this girl didn't seek bloody vengeance for the death of her parents.

Forbidden Donut

So... was Q calling Beverly a, ya know, female dog in that scene?

Joe Concepts

I like that this gives us a return to Q seeming much more threatening than he has been lately. And the guy's constant invasion of personal space creeps me out a bit.

Joe Concepts

A, I give it an A... ok so I'm not rational for this episode...it's Olivia D'abo I've had a star crush on that women since I was a child and saw her in Conan the Destroyer. When I'm not simping over a D'abo sighting this is a decent Q episode, the struggles of resisting temptation of using those powers, how absolute power can corrupt so easily. In a way it shows how much restraint Q and The Q actually have. Ok back to simping for D'abo...if you'll excuse me...

Sequiro

It's okay. It has some fun moments, it's also nice seeing Q get his ass handed to him. But the crime here is that the episode doesn't explain why Amanda has to be a full Q, or else she has to consciously suppress her powers. Why not have her agree to be stripped of her powers? Deja Q already established that making a Q a mortal against their will is totally a thing that is possible, but it's not brought up here at all, as if none of the writers had ever seen that episode.

Ian Westcott

In universe, it was because Q and Vash were keeping each other company. Once they had a falling out, Q felt in the mood to get back with his first love - Jean-Luc Picard. Out of universe? Memory Alpha said a number of Q stories were considered but all were rejected. They just didn't find any plots they wanted to put into production. People have speculated that Star Trek 6 sapped creative resources, but I personally doubt that. DS9 sapped creative resources in TNG Season 6, but that didn't stop Q from appearing.

Ian Westcott

Takes a concept we’ve seen before in the first season but makes it slightly better. Q is finally back to being a more serious threat, which was needed for the character. Amanda is played here well and you feel sorry for her. She ultimately chooses differently from Riker and I think it’s the more realistic choice. Giving this one B for “Barking Beverly”

Column Meanie

I always liked this one. Was it a coincidence or a genuine "Wizard of Oz" reference with the tornado in Kansas being the way Amanda's parents were executed? Memory Alpha doesn't say. I rank this as "Enjoyable".

KatWithAttitude

I wish I could remember anything that happens in this episode, but all I can ever remember about it is THE STUPID ARM THING!

Nerd's Gold

Not another Q episode, was my reaction to any Q ep including this one. I skip it when rewatching the show.

Sainjl

Does anybody know why Q had no season 5 episode?

Sam Langanke

Q is a great character that should have better stories. But this was an okay story. It gives us a glimpse into the continuum and grows the mythology just a bit. I enjoyed it. B

Crankygrandma

I turned this off about half way. This episode is typical of the show: no stakes for the ship or crew, some guest star that could have been another Charlie X if the show wanted to tell an exciting story but contented itself to be a tension free, drama deficient little tale about a guest star bringing nothing by way of danger, excitement or anything that could be called entertainment. It's a very typical TNG episode.

Ken R

The episode can't spoil itself. If it was really "a spoiler" it would have been titled something different.

Jovet

Not a fan of this one. I love Q's character. But this story is just boring. And I do not believe it portrays a race like the Q very soundly. Crusher as a barking dog is the humor highlight of this one. But this one is supposed to be shocking at the cold ruthlessness of the "Q" and I just don't care. "C" grade

Jovet

Why? Just why? To be fair I used to really like this episode when I was young, but now ? Meh. D but the last scene with crusher makes it a C-

Sixto

Although I always enjoy John DeLance, here is another Q episode that doesn't measure up to expectations. It reminds me a little of the Hide and Q episode from season 1. I always enjoy Olivia D'Abo, though, and she gives at least a decent performance here, although it's a little difficult to have sympathy for this character we've just met.

Collin Freeman

By the standards of the old letter grades I'd never give any Trek a E and very few D. But....never really liked this one. No reason for that...just don't

Greg Quinn

E - Ruins the Q The less we know about them the better. Trying to define them, what they can do, how they exist, what they are, diminishes what Q and Q episodes bring to the setting and the cast of characters (when Q episodes are done well) Mysterious races and characters are better off left mysterious

#MaxwellDidNothingWrong

Another solid 'A' for me in probably the best Q episode since "Q Who". Fascinating premise, fine guest star, excellent episide.

Cirk Bejnar

Totally forgot they spoiled that. Oh well.

Evan Guthrie

Prediction: you guys will be upset that they spoiled Q in the title again. I liked Q’s interactions with Picard in this one. While it’s clear that Picard can do nothing to keep Q from carrying out his plans, they still discuss things *almost* on an equal level. Q respects him.

tyranusfan

This one is good, but not great, and it makes me feel like TNG started to waste Q at this point.

Paul O'Neal

Q couldn't call Dr Crusher a bitch, so he turned her into one. S Tier for that subtly alone! =D

James Knight

I guess after the awful QPid in S4 they gave us a Q-break in S5. This one was a surprise with the focus on Amanda and Q appearing later in the episode. Olivia d'Abo did a great job as Amanda. Q turning Dr Crusher into a dog was absolutely priceless. This one is a banger. B

Ron Hubbard Jr

Q's back - and it's fine..?. I think the title spoils his appearance? And it's an episode wholly revolving around a guest character who's journey I don't really care about, given she won't be around next week. My favorite season is having a rough start.

Nolan

After Q losing his powers, this is probably the other Q episode I like.

Aramis Calcutt

An interesting episode. Always liked d'Abo as the girl. Funny moment turning Doctor Crusher into a barking dog for a moment and she never even noticed. B-tier

Alexander McKechnie

This is probably the worst example of an episode title totally spoiling the story, as Q doesn't even show up (from memory) til almost halfway through the episode. Even if his involvement was a surprise, I doubt it would have helped much, I find this one pretty uninteresting. I don't care about this character at all.

Martin S

Oh, Q

Jason Lallathin

To be fair it's portrayed as a bad thing

Evan Guthrie

I always felt like this one was a redo of "Hide and Q" - a human offered the power of the Q and tempted by the power. This one's more competently done, but still doesn't really explore the potential of the concept very deeply. Q is fun, as always, though.

Steven Linden

The rare Q episode that’s not either terrible or excellent. Just pleasantly good. d’Abo is terrific. High B.

John M.

I have to say there were some nice moments in this, but it was a bit dull. One thing to note they had a view of the Enterprise that reminded me of a similar scene you used on your shows end credits for season 3.

Keith S

They did the same angle on the outside of the engineering section that you guys used to use in the livestreams. This one gets a lot of hate, but I never really found it that bad. C+/B- kind of episode. One of my bigger gripes was when Amanda used her powers to "make Riker love her". She stopped herself, but that felt way more rapey than the scene in First Contact that everyone goes on about.

Timothy Nikiforovs

Rewatched this recently and It was nowhere near as bad as I remembered. A little lightweight perhaps but some good delancie stuff

Jon1701

The Q episode I find the most forgettable, and a bit tedious

Paul Rymer

Another recurring character we skipped in season 5. It's an interesting take on the Q continuum. Fun premise. Not the best episode. C+ for me.

Nathan Walker

I… am bored here. I am not given any real reason to care about Amanda or what happens to her. Best part of the episode is getting a little more Q lore

Jeffrey

B for Bitch Crusher 🤣 Great to expand the **looore** of the Q Continuum, and introducing us to the concept that it isn't all one big happy family. As Guinan said, "Not all the Q are alike: some are almost respectable"... What would be your perfect Q episode, if you guys had to write one?

The Ninth Doctor

Q’s first return since season 4, and I think this is a competent entry into his saga. This episode explores the moral implications of choosing to use omnipotent powers, much better than Hide and Q did. I predict you’ll enjoy this episode more than other recent Q entries.

Evan Guthrie

Well, of course, he wasn't so stolid before the beard :)

Thomas Cole

A weaker Q Episode, but nice to see John de Lancie back after missing him last season, but otherwise not really much to say.

Thomas Cole

Q is finally back and.. it’s one of his most mediocre outings. Riker is the victim for once though.
