Arguably the best Barkley episode. A good interpretation of facing your fears, and Barkley was the best character to use for it.

2025-03-13 22:29:04 +0000 UTCThe Barclay Rises! Good for him in figuring out the problem and overcoming his fear/anxiety. Weird AF to see 'transporter eels', but cool to see a first person perspective on being transported. Also: Personally, I would never let myself be beamed, ever. Seems like you're being murdered and then copied IMO.

2025-03-13 18:12:19 +0000 UTCNice moment where just MAYBE Riker doesn't seem to hate Barclay. When he tells him "Glad you could join us" when he finally beams over. It might seem minor, but he didn't have to say that.

2025-03-13 15:46:35 +0000 UTCI think a lot of fans get it wrong, suggesting Barclay never used a transporter. I didn't think that's what he means exactly. He just avoids it as best he can, and finds a way around it. I'm sure he has used it before. It was just in this situation where this time there was much more to be nervous about when using it, he couldn't do it. And if you think about it, he's usually been a lower level engineer staying on ships, and never going on away teams. It's not the same as Riker avoiding it.
Joe Concepts
2025-03-13 15:44:17 +0000 UTCAnother great showcase of everyone's confidence in their crew. Again, instead of dismissing the fears of someone who it would be easy to question, Picard backs him up. So many other TV shows would have the characters very easily assume the other person was going crazy or something. "You've been under a lot of stress lately, you're probably imagining things."
Joe Concepts
2025-03-13 15:39:41 +0000 UTCThey do such a great job with Barclay, showing him actually evolve and improve convincingly even in just a few appearances! Each episode, he seems to be less nervous and more confident, aside from when he has a GOOD reason to be anxious. He stays himself, but gains confidence.

2025-03-13 15:37:18 +0000 UTCThis is an interesting episode, the main premise of people having a phobia of transporters is great and completely justified. I think the plot of the other ship and crew is a bit meh but the interactions between Barclay, The Chief, LaForge and Data are great and boosts up to a solid B. Barclay gaslighting himself into thinking he’s going mad is so well done, I just wish the resolution to the episode had a bit more point to it.
Worf and Riker Ride Again
2025-03-13 13:58:30 +0000 UTCI will never hate a Barclay episode. Even if its a little out there this time with the premise. The worm things freaked me out as a kid. Using Barclay with his phobias was wonderful though makes it work and gives us a wonderful episode with his great performance as always. I give this a solid B
Sequiro
2025-03-13 04:16:17 +0000 UTCI'm also a B for Barclay. He's great, he really is, and just like Ensign Ro, I like any crew member who punctures the bubble of the high-functioning ultra-competent and loyal Starfleet crewmember. The science stuff is... pretty weird (Why did the lost crew present as worms? Was that ever explained?)

2025-03-11 22:28:59 +0000 UTCBarclay sees ghosts in the transporter and they turn out to be real. That's essentially all that happens. Banging Barclay episodes so far involve him battling a fear and then heroically overcoming it to solve a mystery, married with an interesting sub-plot. But this time we have the whining Barclay for far too much of the episode, watching his neuroses play out without much else happening, with a weak-to-non-existent sub-plot. The result is unsatisfying because we know from the start Barclay will be proved right and there's so much boring padding before we get there. A wasted opportunity, "C".

2025-03-11 19:00:23 +0000 UTCB, for Barclay. Though I could be wrong and it could be better.

2025-03-10 19:42:50 +0000 UTCDwight Schultz steals the show as always. That alone makes it an A for me.

2025-03-10 02:43:30 +0000 UTCFor anyone who understands how the transporter works - it is, in fact, a murder machine. The person who rematerializes is NOT you. Just a perfect copy. You die when the pattern buffer gets purged. But I do love this episode. And definitely respect Barclay's healthy fear of the transporter.
Kyle Stewart
2025-03-10 01:05:18 +0000 UTCI enjoy this one a lot. Barclay episodes are fun, and he eventually solves his problem himself as well as saving the other Yosemite crewmembers. It's always good to see when someone has a problem that seems really far-fetched and no one thinks they're an idiot. And we get to meet another “member” of the O'Brien “family”. My ranking for this one is “Excellent”.
KatWithAttitude
2025-03-09 20:23:39 +0000 UTCAnother Barclay episode. And seeing the inside of a transporter beam during transportation. I had always assumed that the transporter suspended animation during the processes since it had to deconstruct and reconstruct all mater but according to this episode, I guess consciousness continues uninterrupted as well as some pseudo-non-physical animation in some alternate pocket reality dimension continues... Going to be honest, I don't think this makes any sense at all, but as a means to tell a story I can forgive it a LITTLE bit.

2025-03-08 19:57:17 +0000 UTCA good Barclay episode. His self-diagnosis scene is hilarious. Seems like if you like the character of Barclay, then you'll appreciate this one. If not, then not. In my head canon, I think the only reason hes made it this far in Starfleet is that he is actually a brilliant engineer.
Chris Mickelson
2025-03-08 18:21:57 +0000 UTCThe premise is a bit silly. Barclays never used a transporter? But it’s a Barclay episode and it gets bumped up a Grade for that reason alone. Barclay also captured anxiety and being an anxious person so well. He really is a stand in for many viewers. Yet despite his anxiety he still saves the day, showing that you can be anxious and still be incredibly brave.
Crankygrandma
2025-03-08 13:18:27 +0000 UTCThis was a ridiculous premise for a ridiculous character. Maybe it's cute and "human interest" to have a guy afraid of transporters, but as we know from a couple of Wesley episodes only the best make it through Starfleet, so why is this guy on the ship? The world building means nothing if the writers see a shot to be sentimental and do Brady Bunch crap? This is proto nu-Trek where everyone is unprofessional and everyone understands and tolerates it even though lives depend on the ship functioning. This is "Discovery" writing. I turned it off with the credits. Maybe it got good, but I can't be bothered to find out .

2025-03-08 10:50:55 +0000 UTCI’m gonna go out on a limb and say that if I were in the 24th century, I’d be right there with Barclay terrified of a machine that rips you apart and puts you back together. I feel Barclay shines in this episode, taking him to the next level by giving him an opportunity to take charge of a situation. I’ll give this one an A for “Always take the shuttle instead”
Column Meanie
2025-03-08 07:00:07 +0000 UTCWe can just ignore the fact that the technology, in the real world, is impossible. And would kill you, even if it were possible. Any sort of real "transporter" technology will employ some form of spacetime folding or such.
Jovet
2025-03-08 05:04:00 +0000 UTCHe'll always be weird. But more good weird than bad, now that he's over his holoaddiction.

2025-03-08 04:59:06 +0000 UTCBarclay is back! He's my favorite TNG character. But this episode is meh. Not great, not terrible. This episode is not very re-watchable to me since one time is enough. "C" grade
Jovet
2025-03-08 04:57:56 +0000 UTCHow in the blazing fuck did Barclay make it through the Academy without ever using a transporter? (Him weaseling out of using it over and over again as a cadet would be a 100x better story for an episode). In addition there's no way you could move or even be conscious while you're being transported. There's not enough good in this episode to outweigh those nagging plot holes.

2025-03-08 03:29:19 +0000 UTCThis was the first Barclay episode I saw and I liked it. I don’t really love his other episodes, too much of a loser.

2025-03-08 02:23:04 +0000 UTCOf course Reg was going to be the one to WebMD himself. I never skip this episode.

2025-03-08 00:49:22 +0000 UTCI forgot O'Brien has a pet spider. He is now my most hated character in all of Star Trek.

2025-03-07 23:41:23 +0000 UTCHow is anyone "moving around" in a suspended transporter beam? By this point you can see the writers aren't paying much attention either.

2025-03-07 23:16:09 +0000 UTCOn first view, this episode gave me a fear of using the transporter! I first saw this episode when I was 9.

2025-03-07 22:32:58 +0000 UTCNot a episode that I ever liked much but I have a feeling you guys will enjoy it maybe a B type thing (though I guess you aren't doing the grades now).

2025-03-07 20:00:36 +0000 UTCI love seeing Reg back, it gets kind of weird with the transporter, and I feel like if Chief O'Brien should have had this all sorted out. Good episode, not great.

2025-03-07 19:06:10 +0000 UTCA bit of a re-imagining of how the transporter works in this one, but a solid episode.

2025-03-07 18:07:43 +0000 UTCVery happy to see Barclay back in the first standalone episode of the season. He was missed in season 5. This one is a solid banger. B+
Ron Hubbard Jr
2025-03-07 17:55:47 +0000 UTCA Barclay episode right off the bat. A deep dive on the Transporters leads to a technobabble filled adventure. This is also okay. But at least the Chief is back.
Nolan
2025-03-07 17:44:56 +0000 UTCAlways like a Barclay episode! B-tier
Alexander McKechnie
2025-03-07 17:25:17 +0000 UTCI like this one. It makes perfect sense that Barclay would be afraid of the transporter. Also, just any excuse to bring him back is welcome. More Barclay, more gooder.

2025-03-07 16:39:58 +0000 UTCI’ll just say that seeing the thumbnail in paramount, I am so glad you guys are watching this from a dvd so ( hopefully ) you can give Reginald Barclay the pop he deserves! I love that they treat Barclay with so much more respect here, but overall this is a TNG down the middle episode. Enjoyable and fun but nothing to go crazy over.
Sixto
2025-03-07 15:47:40 +0000 UTCLove Barclay, love this episode.
Steven Linden
2025-03-07 15:24:49 +0000 UTCThis is fine. They’re never consistent in Trek about how much you can perceive/move about while beaming, but their take on it here never worked for me. C.

2025-03-07 15:05:52 +0000 UTCDr McCoy was right. Stay out of transporters!
Jason Lallathin
2025-03-07 14:58:21 +0000 UTCFirst time you get to see a first person view of being transported. Ive been wanting to see that since the original series.
Keith S
2025-03-07 14:26:48 +0000 UTCThis is one of the more "meh" episodes of S6, but it's good to see Barclay again, and it was cool seeing a first person perspective of being beamed somewhere. I usually point to this episode as evidence that the transporter does not in fact kill you every time you use it.
Timothy Nikiforovs
2025-03-07 14:20:15 +0000 UTCA solid Barclayesque episode for me. Nice to see a bit of character development for O’Brien as well.
Jon1701
2025-03-07 14:11:24 +0000 UTCBarclay makes a welcome return after taking a season off, in an episode of firsts I think, and it’s also the first episode in a while to feature O’Brien - so it gets a high rating from me, but the plot itself is an interesting one.
Paul Rymer
2025-03-07 14:04:57 +0000 UTCNot Barclays best episode, some neat ideas tho like the Transporter sequence.
Darren Seal
2025-03-07 13:44:37 +0000 UTCBarclay phobia of the week episode, not his best episode story, but I like this one, the “worms” in the matter stream in the transporter still wig me out whenever I rewatch
LonghillAndy
2025-03-07 13:42:54 +0000 UTCA pretty mediocre episode in my opinion, but interesting that we finally get to see the point of view of someone going through the transporter.
Evan Guthrie
2025-03-07 13:40:34 +0000 UTCGood to see Barclay again - but this is still a weak episode. Don’t just keep throwing new phobias at Reg

2025-03-07 13:36:02 +0000 UTCI like this episode, Reginald Barclay is a favourite recurring character for me and also lot's of Chief Petty Officer Miles O'Brien.

2025-03-07 13:35:42 +0000 UTCBarclay is back to being “weird!”
Phil Ken Sebben
2025-03-07 13:29:45 +0000 UTCBarclay! How we've missed him in season 5! Always a treat to have him in an episode. This one is no different! As many times we've seen an issue with the Transporter, it's no wonder people like Barclay have an issue with it. Geordi says something to the effect of: "It's statistically the safest way to travel." - okay Superman. Great performances from everyone. Easy A for me.
Nathan Walker
2025-03-07 13:26:19 +0000 UTCNice to see Reg back, he gets some development, and of course with an episode focused on the transporter, we get to see a lot of THE CHIEF! But a nice look at showing how not everyone has to be perfect officers to work on the Enterprise again.
Thomas Cole
2025-03-07 13:25:12 +0000 UTCB+ for Barclay Banger..! Also "Heisenberg Compensators" refer to a real world bit of science 'stopping' us making transporters for real, the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle. This says you can't know both the position and speed/momentum of a particle at the same time. Kinda key if you want to break down someone's atoms and rebuild them somewhere else precisely - and not into goop. Mike Okuda on the TNG staff was once asked how Heisenberg Compensators worked, to which he replied "very well, thank you..." 😆
