Recorded Live Video: March Updates

Comments

I thought you would start DS9 after TNG ends but this is super exciting! Just 10 episodes after Season 6! I am currently not a Patreon because I am not that invested in late season TNG but will jump to rejoin when DS9 begins, looking forward to it

Not for the uncut reactions, only for public YouTube videos

Josh (Target Audience)

I don't know how you do so much. Two ST a week is enough. Is it better for you if Patrons click through and watch the YouTube version of videos? Apologies if you've already talked about this.

Time's Arrow part one!

What is this in reference to?

I know you guys already reacted to the original TOS pilot episode, “The Cage”, as a bonus reaction, but just as an FYI it was actually aired October 4, 1988 before the second season of TNG which started late due to the writer’s strike that year. It was never aired, outside of the parts of it shown in “The Menagerie”, before this. The original “lost” episode was shown with an upgrade from black & white as it was originally shot in 1964 to color to match what we had already seen in “The Menagerie”. It was later digitally remastered with the rest of TOS in 2007 & 2008. The season three Blu-Ray released in 2009 has the original and remastered “color” version of “The Cage” that aired in 1988 plus the “lost” black & white version from 1964 with an intro by Gene Roddenberry. Incidentally, the special shown on October 4, 1988 had an intro by Patrick Stewart. This is a link about the special: https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/The_Star_Trek_Saga:_From_One_Generation_To_The_Next

Well gents, you got through it. We knew it'd be a disappointing grind. Disappointing because there were some great moments, and great dialogue, but the story is achingly slow and uncompelling. Thanks for sticking it out.

Ross Townsend

I just joined yesterday to watch The Expanse reactions. I love your honest reactions. I can’t wait until you get towards the end of season 2. Great job guys!

Janel of Ganymede

I'm not sure that applies to all movies though. Take the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre: In my opinion, that movie is best experienced low res, grainy etc....because it fits the tone of that movie. That whole feeling of watching it on a UHF channel at 1am, almost looking like a snuff film lol. Its like....Billy Joel. He is not meant to be heard in an arena. He's meant to be heard in a smokey bar just before closing time. Its all about "in situ" :)

River Acheron

Are you going to show your reaction to the first Superman with Christopher Reeves on YouTube?

Rick McCombs

The Thing was a pretty poor choice to use for an example since the 4K and the fx look amazing.

Anthony MacEwan

I can't freaking wait!

Clyde Frog

I remember hair! :)

HuskerChuck

Yes Josh, be thankful you have hair. Some of us aren't so fortunate :P

Paul

Heart palpitations!

Paul

That’s appreciated

Josh (Target Audience)

Can't believe we're already about to reach DS9.

Gotta say I've only been a member for a couple months, but I think you are very considerate and reflective on getting the balance right between what needs to be prioritized for the channel and what you guys personally are interested in doing. Being a "content creator" can be a real double-edged sword, and I've seen others burn out over it. Getting the ratio right for delivering on promises while also keeping it fresh and interesting for yourself can't be easy, so kudos to you guys.

35mm film has natural resolution higher than 4K. Now, there are instances where distributed theatrical prints, being a few generations removed from the final negative, would have been expected to make things like fishing lines become no longer visible. Nowadays any 4K mastering from the negative (or other preservation film elements) will adjust for this properly. Watching 35mm films in 480p SD is nowhere close to what the original theatrical experience would have been, in resolution or breadth of dynamic range.

captveg

I completely disagree with the comments here. Older movie resolutions were certainly not "original 480p". They were shot on film, which is a much, much higher resolution than 480 or even 1080. So the FX work was absolutely meant to be seen in high resolution, but the only way to see it at the time was in movie theaters because TV broadcasts and home video did not have the resolution at that time.

TRK2

Haha you’re lucky you joined when you did.

Josh (Target Audience)

Season 3! \o/

Jason Lallathin

Dang it. Missed it live :(

Everyone knows future toilets will come with three seashells.

Older movies are best seen in their original 480p resolutions. When you go 4k with movies, like "The Thing" for instance, the FX weren't meant to be seen in high res. You start to see set and makeup flaws you normally wouldn't catch in 480p. Some movies, like "Star Wars" do work because they pour new fx and go over it with a fine-tooth comb to cover any flaws, but it costs a lot.

blitz blotz

You could always give us a second movie choice. Maybe, possibly, could be, just sayin'.

startrekiborg

I appreciate you guys watching ahead in order to shorten the reaction break. I'm used to watching 3-5 episodes of TNG per week during my rewatches so a 3 week gap might have caused a nervous breakdown.
