UNCUT REACTION - Star Trek TNG S1E24 - We'll Always Have Paris

I don't think this is a bad episode or anything, but I've always found it fairly forgettable. The time distortion story is fairly interesting from a purely sci fi perspective, and the scenes with the crew encountering their past/future selves were pretty trippy. But in the end while the idea is cool, what we got of it was very dry.
I think the other story with Jenice works a bit better because Picard is still developing as a character so more backstory is quite welcome at this point. On the one hand it feels wrong for her to be so close with a former love interest while her husband was dying in sickbay. But then again aside from that kiss on the cheek, it's not like they were making out or sleeping together, so it's not like she flat out cheated, and Manheim did explain that she'd been very isolated in their marriage. Ultimately it wound up being 2 adults having a mature conversation to wrap up unfinished business from decades ago, so I think they balanced their interactions fairly well.
This also feels like a bit of a precursor to Measure of a Man along with several other episodes of S1 where Data is regarded in some way as "just a machine". Though here it hits harder given he himself jumps to the conclusion that he's expendable even though that's not what Picard meant.
But yes, it does feel like they split the run time between 2 stories to the detriment of both. Perhaps it could also be a case of mismatched A and B plots that didn't compliment each other very well. It's certainly no Angel One or Last Outpost, it's a competent episode, but it's kind of just there.

Agreed. And the scifi aspect of the episode wasn't that strong or interesting either.

As the show matures, the writers will require that the computer be directly addressed as "Computer" before it accepts a command, and doesn't respond to random words (as that would be chaotic).

Yes, it wasn't an oversight. The single shot was film they couldn't find so they had to upconvert the old video footage. There was an episode in season 3 too where they couldn't find the film of one scene so they had to upconvert

2:28 If it had been a "real" phenomenon, those affected would not have been able to tell anything happened. LOL The writer isn't very timey-whimey.

Manheim gives Picard a free pass, this romance reminded me of Bones trust with the salt vampire

I never really cared for this episode always thought it was one of the weaker season 1 episodes. The romantic stuff was an such a superficial Hallmark Level

Your comments about the final holodeck scene between Picard and Jenice made me think of a teen boy with a candy-apple red Corvette showing off to his would-be girlfriend. "So babe, what do you think of my holodeck? Pretty cool, eh?"

No, I think you nailed it. The holodeck was listening and adjusted the program to match with the ladies. If Alexa is always listening, then certainly the ship's computer is.

Yeah, since I refuse to pay Paramount+ more capital to continue making crappy modern shows, I'm stuck watching along with my DVDs in all their low-def, murky coloured glory. I mean, I also haven't figured out how to get my Blu-rays to work on my computer, but what the hey, I don't mind breaking them out. Kinda prefer the packaging anyways, lol.

Well, I bet the next "We get it!" moment will come from the epilogue being a reference to Casablanca.
Also, not sure, and having not yet watched the discussion video, so I may be wrong, but seems there's a bit of a misunderstanding in your reaction on what is meant by "dimensions," which isn't entirely your fault, pop culture has been mis-using that word for ages. Infinite dimensions doesn't refer to a multiverse, or universe hopping as if timelines diverged (even though this episode DOES have moments of diverging time.) Rather its about the difference between a line segment, a 2D shape, a 3D shape, and even a 4D shape, or a side, a square, a cube, and then next level up, a hypercube, sometimes known as, yes, a tesseract (The MCU didn't just make that word up either).
There is a theory that Time a higher dimension above our 3D one, usually the 4th, (H.G. Wells' novel "The TIme Machine" posits this for example) but this episode touches on there being infinitely more than that. That our perspective is limited and Manheim was able to cross over and see beyond the dimension we see, and that time is indeed one of the dimensions he interacted with. I think the best fictional exploration of the differences and interactions of multiple dimensions is the book titled "Flatland" by Abbot Stewart, if any one is interested.

Don't worry, I started to share this too. But then, I barely knew who they were back when I watched this one live. Just remember it being "newsworthy" because it was the first sign of legitimizing this show in the realm of pop culture and with the public, having a famous person appear as guest-role.

The unfortunate part about that last paragraph is they absolutely could remaster those other series (they did for a few scenes that for What We Left Behind documentary for Deep Space Nine), but it would be an astronomical cost. From what I recall, they basically broke even with the TNG remasters after all the sales, and that was by far the most popular Star Trek series.

I doubt that they just 'forgot' to remaster that one low quality shot of Riker. The show was originally shot on film, so the HD remaster was mostly a matter of scanning the original film at a higher resolution than it was aired at (and re-doing any CGI effects). But every now and then, the remastering team found that the original film for some particular shot was missing or damaged, and in those cases they had to resort to upscaling taped footage instead.
Side note. That's a big part of why there aren't official HD remasters of Deep Space Nine or Voyager, because those shows were shot on tape instead of film, so no true HD footage exists in the first place.

I can believe the holodeck can recreate how a single cafe looked two decades ago considering we have cameras covering every square inch of public space now in present day.
