ADVENTURE TIME Distant Lands "Obsidian" Full Length Reaction

Comments

I've been delaying watching your Distant Lands reactions but I absolutely LOVE this episode. I love PB and Marceline so much. I'm finally watching this a month later XD

Ah Obsidian..... it's no wonder why it's the favorite special of so many people, me tho.... im a bit torn, i really like the themes of Obsidian but the last special it's very good too. So..... the fact that PB seems to be living in Marceline's house now.... also seems to imply that she's no longer ruling the Candy Kingdom, or perhaps she is but somehow manages to do it while still spending most of her time with Marcy. Tho the most likely explanation is that Bubblegum left Aunt Lolly in charge of the Kingdom. You know.... even tho the style of the show has always remained consistent.... you can really see how much the art has changed and evolved if you go back to seasons 1 and 2... and compare them to these specials. Yep.... it's so nice to see good ol' Simon just living as himself in Ooo. After almost 1000 years of being the insane Ice King... it's no wonder Simon still struggles with being just him once again, we cannot forget that he was somewhat conscious while being the Ice King.... so him putting on the robe and toy crown to cope does make sense. We get more flashbacks of Marceline's mom (her name is Elise, by the way) which we haven't gotten since the Stakes Mini-series. And although it's a little sad that Rebecca Sugar couldn't voice her once again... Erica Luttrell (Sapphire from SU) does a splendid job with the character. Of course Glassboy's voice is familiar... it's Michaela Dietz! our dear Amethyst (and Vee from Owl House too). Yeah.... "Woke Up" is hard to listen to... not just because it's a diss track.... but also cuz it's the moment when Marceline and PB broke up (i would say this was approximately 200 years ago). This also recontextualizes all their first scenes together in the early seasons of the show.... like their first Canon interaction in the episode "Come With Me", suddenly... PB not being thrilled of seeing Marceline.... or Marceline making Finn release savage wolves inside PB's bedroom.... make a lot more sense now (althought i think that last part it's even worse now, looking at it in retrospect xddd). I really don't have much to say about the Glass People... since they pretty much just serve as a conduit to tell this particular Marceline and Bubblegum story. It's so sad to see how much hate and anger Marcy used to have... she had to live her childhood in a cruel and wasted world... and had to justify to herself why others might look at her like a monster in order to not crumble as a person. Yeah.... that scene of Elise's last message to Marceline was gut-wrenching (like i said... Erica Luttrell did a fantastic job). If Hunson was not happy that his daughter turned the family Axe into a Bass.... i think he wouldn't be very thrilled if he found out that it just got destroyed xddd. Man...... after this special came out... "Monster" instantly became my new favorite song of the whole franchise, sure i also love "Everything Stays" because it's a song that really encapsulates what this show is all about.... but it is also such a broad theme... it doesn't feel very personal. "Monster" however is a VERY personal song.... a track that speaks solely about Marceline as a character.... a song she made to let herself be completely vulnerable for the first time since she was a small child. But im not gonna lie.... even tho i understand why they put Larvo's backstory as the visuals for the song (it's a good metaphor).... it is still kinda distracting... which takes away the impact of the moment the first time you watch it, a moment that should be all about Marceline and PB.... and nothing more (but there are really good edits out there on youtube which make the visuals of the song all about Marcy, as it should be). "She got pants now" IMPECCABLE Comedic Timing xdddddddddd. The character that came out of the RV after the Banana Guards is indeed Bronwyn, Kim Kil Whan's Daughter, it seems like she has become an Adventure Partner or maybe even an apprentice to Finn. Yep... that's our Finn (your reaction was awesome xdd), but despite what the full beard might make you think... Finn during this special must be around 21 to 23 years old, which means that Obsidian takes place 4 to 6 years after the end of the show. It also seems like Finn is now completely used and comfortable with the fact that he doesn't have an arm anymore, which is a good thing. Although.... a not so pleasant thing to consider is the fact that Jake is nowehere to be seen.... and that Finn has a tattoo of him on his chest..... which pretty much confirms that at this point in time Jake has already passed away. Also.... a really good subtle joke when Finn entered the scene is that... when his towel was blown off... Marcy is trying to look away while PB just shrugs off with an "Eh" while dead-staring at him xddd. a subtle and funny way to indicate Marcy and Bonnie's interests (Bisexual and Lesbian respectively). Im not sure is that is meant to be Pendleton Ward, i've never read any article or declaration about it so it probably isn't him.... but im not entirely sure. And at the end..... we get a scene of how Bonnie and Marcy met each other, which is also when Marcy gave her the famous shirt. This special was really good.
