ONE PIECE EP 301 "Spandam's Shock! A Hero Stands on the Tower of Justice" Full Length Reaction

Comments

Yes, Luffy's English actress, Colleen Clinkenbeard, has been playing Luffy throughout the entire series as far as I'm aware. And while she's one of the few cases where I actually prefer the Japanese voice, I have nothing but respect for anyone willing to commit to THIS role for so damn long.

That comment actually highlights perfectly the main reason I prefer dubs. I tend to find that subs have the problem of sometimes being TOO accurate, as in either translating a line so directly that there's no personality in it or translating some kind of joke or cultural reference that English-speaking people just aren't going to get unless it's explained to them. I've already seen the latter happen a few times in the comments of these reactions. Likewise, while this sub has been pretty good at keeping the humor for the most part, I've already pointed out a few instances where I think the dub just genuinely has the better lines. One prominent example being "The dreams of men will never die!" vs. "People's dreams won't ever end!", which probably sounds fantastic in Japanese but awkward in English. Another example is Kaku's trait of talking like an old man, which was translated faithfully into English but essentially doesn't exist in this version, since English-speaking fans don't know the language cues to pick up on it. In short, I hold the opinion that unless you speak Japanese and live in Japan, you're not getting the intended experience regardless. It was made in Japanese for a Japanese audience. So I'd rather watch the version that personally entertains me more. Side note: I'm actually really impressed by how well modern dubs have managed to keep the same story despite the limitation you mentioned. Aside from a single instance where Garp was accidentally called an Admiral instead of a Vice-Admiral, I can't think of any time where the Funimation dub actually screwed something up with the translation. (And the less said about the 4Kids dub the better.)

I personally hate all dubs everywhere for everything because they are generally less accurate translations of the original spoken Japanese than subtitles. When Japanese is translated into English accurately a lot of time the translated sentence is much longer and this leads to issues with dubs where you only have so much space to stick spoken English. It leads to less accurate translations to fit. I'm glad the dubs exist for people that like them and dubs in general have come a long way since the early days of anime in the sense that they're generally of much higher quality but I just personally can't stand them. I'd much rather read the subtitles and have the more accurate translation.
