As far as I can recall, this is the first time we've seen someone eat a Devil Fruit in the present time, and it definitely introduces an interesting new element to two characters who were already plenty formidable. Like the typical "superpower awakening" story, but with the villains.

The government is putting up a firm resistance, we're moving pretty easily through them, but their sheer numbers take a while to mow down. I love the tension it builds, and the payoffs hit so much harder. When I tried reading the manga for the first time after getting into the series with the anime, I found it too fast paced for my liking. As the arcs got longer, the manga got better in my opinion. Oda found a good balance of pacing, especially when you read the chapters in volumes rather then one a week. Likewise, I think the anime is better binged. Sometimes the scenes and reactions and crowd shots and background fights can be drawn out, but it really boils that emotion to a really satisfying payoff. This arc in particular is an emotional rollercoaster. It's why I really like Toei's adaptation this early on, great art and animation notwithstanding.
