I was going to make a comment on all the things we learned in this episode but someone already beat me to it xddd. But still.... safe to say is..... this is probably the most important episode of the season. Holy shit, i didn't realize Pamela Adlon voiced Gunther, im familiar with her since she was the voice of Vidia in the Tinker Bell Movies (which i really really like).

The Extinction of the Dinosaurs happened millions of years ago, and a the comets crash into the earth every 1000 years... I can't get into this explanation much because im afraid it might contain slight spoilers.... but there's reason to believe that Finn's comet came much, much later.

2025-02-14 06:29:16 +0000 UTCi love that you took the time to rewatch this episode. it is just so absolutely jam packed. this is the one I’ve been waiting for, lol! the reveal that the crown simply turns you into evergreen when you put it on is so masterfully done. you kept saying “he feels like ice king but he’s not”, and i just kept waiting for the scene. such a tragic and preventable story, if only evergreen had respected gunther and taught him

2025-02-14 00:32:20 +0000 UTCThe Lore episode!! This confirms A LOT about the show and its world and characters. So, Ice King himself is not actually Ice King. The crown is a wish-granting device, and since Gunther wore the crown, he wished to become Evergreen or at least become a more distorted version of Evergreen. However, the crown kept that wish in its programming even millions of years later, which is why when someone like Simon wears the crown he also becomes Evergreen or in this case the Ice King. The elementals are pretty crazy, too, so the world is always destined to have a cycle of elementals with these people here but also in the future, as seen with respective characters like Princess Bubblegum, Fire Princess, Slime Princess, and technically Ice King (even though he's a version of evergreen). Yet again Adventure Time brings up the idea of reincarnation, which is really interesting. Good catch on remembering Finn being a comet, so yes, this would imply that the comets that hit Earth every 1000 years would embody something or someone. And looking at the comet in this episode, with its green hue and fiery horns, it would most likely be the coming of the lich. But this couldn't have been after Finn since this takes place in prehistoric times, as well as the mushroom wars not happening yet (which is implied to be a human war with nuclear warfare and stuff like that). So most likely, the Lich came into the world from the comet, which caused the extinction of the dinosaurs, 1000 years later, Finn would come into the world as a comet as a way to balance out the world, a good force to counteract evil.
