I agree! The villain centered episode that also had them practicing friendship was telling! And that is true that they all stuck to their guns and their believes. It did make them getting along and their banter real even if it was annoying from a teamwork standpoint π

- Some notes/thoughts/facts: -
Wooo a villain centric episode!
And yes its similar to one of the logs that Chrysalis had in "Mean 6".
It also could be a reference to her origin, that was explained in her Comic of the "Fiendship is Magic"- Series.
Cupcakes, bringing Villains together since 2019 π
Tirek swallowing Chrysalis magic... π - it all swells up into a fight between them.
Trust-bonding with a villain song about vanquishing the Mane 6 - but despise all these typical trust methods failing, they come close to a common ground, just to fight over who will be in charge again...
"A better way to be bad" is truly a great song. Why are most villain songs better than any other?
Anyway have some great remixes:

Aaand they are still bickering... so much that Grogar intervenes and shows them who is boss with quite some power and he is right, that all 3 failed to defeat the mane 6 despite their claims to be powerful... well not powerful enough it seems. π
No Rainbow wouldn't be able to reach that mountain - remember back at Griffinstone? She was unable to fly through these strong gusts in the ravine and even hurt herself and had to be rescued. π€
The friendship journal got far and wide and reached even the remotest regions... interesting π
Chrysalis transforming into other creatures, which aren't just cute, to use to her advantage, was very interesting and cool to see somehow...
I absolutely love all these cute grumpy evil faces of Cozy π€£

Tireks calls out Cozy's real behaviour π
Cozy Glow: "You calm down! Ponies are supposed to do [echoing] what I ask them to do! It's, like, my thing! Okay?!" - Wow... she is admitting it right-out and gets karma through a huge snowball, that karma was indeed too hilarious and cute π
Chrysalis had to stop, even her Roc form was unable to reach the peak...
The cat is out of the bag: Tirek really didn't try to do anything, as he knew he couldn't do it alone. He was smart enough to wait for the others' experiences.
Cozy Glow: "This is not the real me! I'm cute and lovable!" - Yeah... as if. It's always so funny when she drops her act and breaks character from her fake cuteness!
You are not yourself when you're hungry, Chrysalis... As soon as she had a lovable meal, she was even more willing to work together... π€£
They're gathered around a campfire, sharing stories about themselves, bonding over Twilight's whining and faults, and uniting in their shared dream of stepping over the Mane 6
And then they finally work together... behind Grogars back...
---
I have to say, it was a blast seeing the villains take center stage for once. This episode is unique in that it focuses entirely on the antagonists without any of the Mane Six or other main characters present.
The dynamic between the trio is both hilarious and intriguing. Cozy Glow, with her overly cute demeanor, tries to take charge, while Chrysalis is consumed by her vendetta against Starlight. Meanwhile, Tirek is just chilling and working out. Their interactions are pure gold, especially when Cozy claims, "Grogar left me in charge", and the others immediately shoot her down the whole time.
Grogar assigns the trio a mission to retrieve his Bewitching Bell from Mount Everhoof, emphasizing the need for teamwork. Each villain, however, attempts to tackle the task solo, leading to inevitable failures:
Cozy Glow employs her usual deception strategy, trying to manipulate the mountain guardian, Rusty Bucket, into assisting her. Her plan backfires, resulting in an avalanche that thwarts her efforts. Chrysalis relies on brute force and her shapeshifting abilities to ascend the mountain. Despite her power, she can't overcome the mountain's magical defenses and is forced to retreat. All while Tirek, displaying cunning, chooses not to make an immediate attempt. Instead, he observes the others' failures, gathering valuable information to devise a more effective strategy. This was quite hilarious to watch and unique in their own ways.
Eventually, they realize that working together is their best bet. Combining their strengths, they manage to retrieve the bell. There's even a moment where Tirek drains Chrysalis's magic to penetrate a force field, and Cozy trusts them enough to not get trapped, which is quite a twisted take on typical friendship and trust-lessons if you ask me...
Despite their cooperation, they still view friendship as a "disease", which is both ironic and telling. Cozy sees friendship merely as a tool to achieve her own goals, exploiting it for power. Chrysalis despises it because she believes it led to her losing her kingdom and harbors deep hatred for Starlight because of it. Tirek resents friendship due to his brother's betrayal, which thwarted his plans to invade Equestria the first time around. They acknowledge the utility of working together but reject genuine friendship, plotting to betray Grogar once they no longer need him.
This episode offers a refreshing change by focusing entirely on the villains, exploring themes of trust, cooperation, and the blurred lines between friendship and manipulation. It's fascinating to see them almost embrace friendship, only to revert to their villainous ways. The contrast between their grudging teamwork and the Mane Six's genuine bonds is striking.
While some might hope for their redemption, I appreciate that they remain true to their nature, making them formidable antagonists. The decision to hide the bell in Grogar's lair, intending to betray him later, adds an exciting layer of intrigue which is quite interesting for the further story development...
The song "A Better Way to Be Bad" is a standout - super catchy and showcases another side of the villains. Villain songs often end up being some of the best, don't they?
Overall, "Frenemies" is a surprising standout episode in Season 9, offering a unique and entertaining perspective on the series' villains. It's not just about the heroes; sometimes, the bad guys steal the show.

Another best episode of the season, itβs crazy we didnβt see even one of the mane 6 or young 6 and this episode is perfect, the villains using friendship to get ahead is amazing, also I loved the song it was so epic.
