Honestly I think the ending of last episode and start of this one was done pretty well, considering they weren't certain at the time of writing that they'd get another season. I'm sure you can piece together how the ending would have gone if they never went home and it led straight into 3rei with a cliffhanger, and how the change would've caught a lot of manga fans off guard and soured their opinion. Without that context though, I think it works fine, and the manga cliffhanger without another season to follow it up would've been ROUGH.
