1) I don't like Mai either, no worries there. But I think she's very much so being depicted as not likeable. 2) I do think the final scene is actually quite thought-provoking. Renako is extremely transparent about her actual feelings with Mai. She *wants* a close bond that you can confide in. She *wants* that to be Mai. She *knows* Mai wants her romantically and isn't *Against* the idea, just not *supportive* of it either (at least yet). So she is clear with Mai that she is open to exploring their relationship more while making it clear that the thing she values is the close connection and not the physical/romantic aspects of the relationship. She understands that from Mai's perspective (as Mai has shared) all of the things Renako wants are "lover" territory and so as Mai's *friend* she wants Mai to have that connection as well. In other words, she's willing to have this vague "friends-but-not-quite-lovers" relationship ("Rema-friends") on the terms that it gives them both what they want... and lets Renako figure out what it is exactly she is actually feeling for Mai. ...Unfortunately, Mai is an aggressive, greedy girl and just takes that as a challenge to court Renako even harder. A lot of people who watch this show claim that Renako is naive and foolish for the way shes behaving... and I do think they are right to an extent (when it comes to relationships). But Renako's answer at the end of this episode actually really speaks to a deeper level of understanding than what initially lets on. Unfortunately, Mai may claim she knows her stuff when it comes to relationships but she's just as naive about them as Renako.

2025-12-29 21:08:52 +0000 UTCWhilst I couldn't support someone like Mai as a real person, I do absolutely like her for her sometimes a little bit manipulative forceful and aggressive side as an anime character. Her presence also sends me reeling into wanting things of relationships in the entire group to escalate further, further and further.
