Hey everyone.
There is a chance that you've already heard about this since it's already making the rounds on social media. But just in case you haven't, I figured I'd leave a note here to everyone who follows this Patreon.
If you are an iOS user and think of subscribing through the Patreon app, please don't, and instead use a PC or the website. Patreon gave out a notice to creators that in a few months time, Apple will be requiring that they are given a 30% cut of all subscriptions handled through their system, and so unless you want to pay extra, it's best to subscribe in ways that don't involve the apple ecosystem.
There is theoretically the choice for us creators to eat the 30% cut, but practically it's pretty much impossible. It would be a case of apple getting 30%, Patreon takes i think it's 5 or 6% in my case, in some cases the payment processor also takes a small cut, then there are cuts taken out by the payment processor it gets sent to on my end, conversion fees and at the end then of course also taxes. (Both in my end, and VAT if applicable)
Soooooo, yeah. Once it goes into effect and I'd eat the cost of it, it'd be a case of if you're paying 12€/$ (in the case of a 20% sales tax), what would end up actually reaching me is around 5€/$.
So, for iOS user it will simply be more expensive to account for apple's 30% tax.
That of course still means that a massive chunk of it gets swallowed up along the way, and money gets disappeared into corporations, but at least on my end I can plan and be sure that a sub will always account for the expected amount of money.
Patreon mentioned this should not affect already existing subs. Though who knows how it'll actually go.
This, btw, is not a Patreon only thing. Chances are, that if you are subbed to something like Youtube premium through iOS, you are already paying more than other users for exactly the same reason.
So while this has become pertinent to the Conway Patreon account right now, you should in general try to avoid subbing or buying stuff through iOS if you can.
