I'm so happy you think so! I wanted to be really prepared for this scene and I'm super grateful to the youtube channel LearnHowtoSign because the instructor takes the time to explain where the signs come from and how they might differ, then uses them in sentences to showcase the grammar. I'm going to be linking the channel on my site when I get to this scene. I wouldn't call myself fluent, I'm still learning, but I've already taught my spouse signs for things they tend to ask for when they're on a headset and can't talk or get up. It's a useful skill even for hearing people and I wish it was more widely used! Before preparing for this scene I knew very little ASL. I had an instructor in 3rd grade who taught my class how to sign certain songs like the national anthem but did not teach us how to converse or even do basic greetings. I could remember most of the alphabet and a few random signs but that was about it.

2024-04-01 06:27:07 +0000 UTCWow. I had never before considered how easy it would be to have a private conversation in sign. Like, obviously it's another language; any conversation you have around people who don't sign will be private. I'm talking about how if you want privacy amongst others who sign, you don't have to go to a separate room or anything--they can just face the other way. This proves (yet again) how much innate understanding Alli has of sign language; I don't know if she knew sign language before she started writing this, but it's obvious that even if she didn't, she's at least conversational in it now. I don't think a minority group could ask for better representation in popular media.
