iPhone App store Update and Workaround for New Members (How to avoid Apple’s new service charge)

Hey everyone! I wanted to give you a quick update for an upcoming change Apple is making that will impact new members who pay through the iPhone Patreon app, and how you can avoid it altogether!

Starting November 4th, Apple will be applying their 30% App Store fee to all new memberships purchased in the Patreon iOS app. This means if you’re already a paying member, your existing membership will not be affected. If you unsubscribe and at some point want to come back (which I hope you do 😊), this could however be relevant for you again. The good news is that there is an easy workaround!

The solution: This 30% fee only applies to purchases made through the IOS App store. Purchases made through Android or through your browser are unchanged. For Android users there is nothing to worry about, but for people who want to pay through the iPhone app store, I would encourage you to simply make your initial payment through the Patreon browser instead over at patreon.com/textstoriesnightly. You can still use the Patreon app as normal on iPhone, but by making the payment through the Patreon website you will avoid the 30% fee. I will be adding a note in the membership descriptions to help inform new/rejoining members of this as well.

Also as a general FYI, this 30% App Store fee is not unique to Patreon, and will be hitting most other payments done through the IOS store, so something to keep an eye on moving forward if you make purchases through there!
