The boyz discuss season 1 episode 5 of The X-Files “The Jersey Devil.”
Chimp Crazy missed another batshit chimp owner named Aya Katz, who, when she's not posting youtube videos of her chimp inspecting her for lice, writes musicals with horribly-contrived stories meant to express her libertarian worldview

The guy who played the smoking man had an acting school in downtown Vancouver for decades, the “William Davis Centre for Acting Study”. Lucy Lawless apparently went through there at some point. Its condos now!

This premiered when I was thirteen, or maybe within a week of my birthday, and it was immediately my shit. I had been super into UFOs and crytpids and space and everything from maybe age 8, and finally there was a not-schlocky show for me. Mulder was cool as hell but damaged and Scully was a straight up smoke show who was also always the smartest person in the room. I lived in the exurbs and mostly couldn't go out and see friends in town, so until it was on Sunday nights, I'd spend Fridays watching with my now-late mother. This show still has two or three of my favorite television episodes of all time (Home, Clyde Bruckman, Jose Chung). It became a shell of itself after season five, and the revival episodes were hit or miss, but nothing compares to the magic of those first few seasons.

yes my jersey bros, the pine barrens are great, i have spent plenty of time there. the local geography bothering me was that atlantic city is a built up area on a barrier island, not abutting the pine barrens in anyway. there are great wooded areas in nj but they do not reach the totally developed coastline even remotely uninterrupted. there is a scene in the episode (from memory, i didn't rewatch) where they are in a parking lot and turn around and the pine barrens are right there. that is the kind of shit that would only bother someone with knowledge of the area, but that was kind of the point of my comment.

Pine Barrens is still going strong. It's a National Preserve and development is pretty strictly controlled (A.C. cratering as an urban space has relieved the area of some pressure for the moment).

Trying so hard to be chill about this. I am what we referred to as an x phile. Originally, they wanted Pam Anderson for the Scully role which would have been insane. Also, the old promotional pictures for this show are worth a deep dive. The Rolling Stone cover 😍. I'm only 20 mins into the ep and nobody has touched on the Duchovny hog lore yet...

Fun fact: the script for the movie Evolution was an old, reworked Ghostbusters 3 script. David Duchovny being set up to be a Bill Murray archetype is not far off at all.

Uhh from one Jersey Bro to another, you never been to the Pine Barrens? You can walk like 20 miles and not cross a road. It's "deep woods". Or was in the 90's, idk if development has wreaked havoc on it. It doesn't actually abut Atlantic City, but it's only a few John Elway vortex throws away. My preferred unit of measurement.

X-Files was so fascinating to me as a child. I remember being put to bed and lying there awake and could hear the theme song playing in the other room. My older brother got to watch it with my mom and dad and I was so jealous. Then constantly being told it's "too scary" for me to watch. It loomed large for years and that feeling is far more impactful than when I finally watched the show.

Not to sound like Gabrus, but this was my (now passed) dad’s all time favorite episode of television. Started watching x files because of it, never stopped talking about it after.

I had the best of both worlds, I was a young teenager when this aired but I had a girlfriend that was into it too. So I'd go over to her house that had minimal supervision and we'd watch it and fool around and I'd walk home after. Deep 90's nostalgia. The monster episodes were my favorite but growing up in NJ this one always drove me nuts. The geography of deep woods coming right up to a coastal city made no sense. I think you only get woods to the beach in the PNW and here in Maine. Also the jersey devil has such a rich mythology and could have been a super cool monster. Maybe save bigfoot for the PNW where you are actually filming?! Anyway, thanks for the memories boyz.
