I'm a fairly new subscriber and only listen to pods about movies I've seen. I've also watched a bunch of sick movies cause of the pod. That is a long excuse for me suggesting fist of fury with Bruce Lee. Maybe a million people have and it's annoying for you, but I love the positive portrayal of the Chinese and evil portrayal of the Japanese. I don't think there are enough American movies that portray China positively considering how important they were in WW2. Also I like all your perspectives on action movies and actively search out your appearances on other pods cause I think all 3 of you are very funny.

You guys should review more classics or classic-adjacent works, especially from New Hollywood. The episodes are your best, and it sounds like you genuinely enjoy it too.

Here's a cool companion piece talking about the score that gets into what Gabrus was talking about https://youtu.be/NTUHOc3R38M?si=uZ3JMHvuRS1Z6sUa

This isn't related to anything in the episode, but Gabrus and Ben would probably like the Gunpowder Mage trilogy by Brian McClellan. Really fantastic fantasy trilogy.

Yoda/Pratt bit made me cackle at the coffeeshop like a lunatic. Couldn't contain myself

Paulie_Saul.

There's a great book about how cool Lucas was/is by Brian Jay Jones called "George Lucas: A Life" worth checking out. Good stuff

Re: bad college animals. Junior year my friend came home with a chinchilla. Uncontrollable. You could hold it for maybe 5 seconds before getting bit or shat on. That one died. His 2nd chinchilla escaped and ate through drywall and got stuck. We had graduated by then, so we left.

Not to defend the Apple iPad ad, but the crushing of all the physical media was a reference to a recently popular trend of videos on TikTok that are just Chinese factory workers throwing giant things into this huge metal jaws trash compactor/crusher. The videos are oddly gratifying and one of those things you can just get lost looking at. Apple was trying to capitalize on this trend but obviously messed up because the crushing of objects that ppl love had a much more sinister effect than they intended.

There was an exhibition here in the UK about the first feature Orson Welles developed, and it was going to be Heart of Darkness, all told from a first person POV. He had many of the storyboards and designs all planned out. Would have made for a fascinating comparison between two very different eras of Hollywood.

HOF Gabrus episode right here

Manifesto Warning** So I know a guy who was heavily involved with making Hearts of Darkness with Eleanor Coppola. I won’t mention his name but let’s just say he was as integral to the making of the movie as Eleanor. He’s often regaled me with stories about “his cut” of the movie and all the scenes and elements that he wanted in but Eleanor refused to include. Most of that involved the insane cocaine use on the production by Francis and everyone else but mainly Francis. My friend insists that much of the “madness” that overtook the cast and crew was deeply rooted in cocaine psychosis which occurs when you are doing huge amounts of coke over long periods of time. That combined with being in the hot jungle, the stress of filmmaking on large enormously large scales, and burning through all of your personal money will get you right square in Coke Psychosis mode. Yes…this is kindof an obvious statement and the doc doesn’t shy away from it completely but my buddy said that Francis acquired several kilos of coke over the course of the production and distributed it to anyone who wanted it as a sort of work bonus/productivity perk. For instance Dennis Hopper insisted that he get a half ounce of blow EVERY DAY which was subsequently delivered to his door each morning of the shoot. My friend said it was such a huge component to the story and production that he felt like they weren’t telling the true story unless they included it but Eleanor (wisely) refused to allow most of it in as she knew how it would fuck up her husband’s legacy to announce that he was the Santa Claus of Cocaine. Probably an unhealthy way to work but man they walked away with the best movie ever made so thank god for cocaine?

Pod Ween Satan

Tidbit from the main APOC episode…the sleazy mc at the playboy bunny scene is Bill Graham the legendary rock concert promoter who was behind countless shows from The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Hendrix…basically every great musician from the 60s and 70s had their shows put on by him in an era where venues were openly hostile to rock bands. He’s credited as being the guy who designed and fully figured out how to put on a big rock show that was safe for the audience and had high quality sound. He founded Bill Graham Productions which eventually turned into Clear Channel which then became the truly evil Live Nation. He was a great man (not to mention holocaust survivor) and so kindofa a bummer that his legacy got turned upside down and morphed into a demonic corporate entity.

Lots of lols as usual. Love you guys.

The boys mentioned the passing of the great mogul, Roger Corman. So I 'm using this as an excuse to share this Irish documentary about Cormans Irish movie studio. For a time in the 90's, the likes of Don "The Dragon" Wilson were kicking micro-budget arse all over Co. Galway. The documentary is quite charming and funny too. https://youtu.be/hB-qnpcEF2Q?si=Xaq2dHYd6SBBo7eO

We were in the Val Verde. There were too many janitors. We had access to too much patreon comments, too much Gwildor and little by little, we wanted to kiss Stanger.

Love the audience shots in that J Hud talk show (cold open vid). I imagined Rodgers, Stanger, and Gabrus in that audience and what they would look like when the camera cuts to focus on them. Gabrus would be waving maniacally at the camera, Rodgers would be wiping away tears (“Tears in his eyes.”), and Stanger would just be making obscene faces. 😄

Milius doing his interview with a visible firearm behind him is on the nose. Him falling for the myth about returning soldiers being spit on is perhaps more on the nose.
