The River Wild (1994)

The boyz discuss The River Wild.
I’ve enjoyed AB for a couple years but it seems to have lost the joy it used to have. Now it’s just Rodgers lecturing the audience & his co-hosts about why they’re wrong about the movie. If the pod ever regains its former sense of fun I’ll happily re-subscribe.

The idea that someone got mad because you said Australia is racist is hilarious. Not ONLY is Australia horribly racist, it's horribly sexist as well, lol!

Hate to re-litigate the drama but... Australia is very racist. So many Maori move to Oz for the great pay but move back to NZ because of the racism.

I’m 49, so I’m probably older than the vast majority of the people that listen to this podcast. It just bummed me out that the little kid in this movie was wearing a Ministry hat. One of my favorite bands in the late 80’s and 90’s. The Lollapalooza hat, Jane’s Addiction mention and Ministry hat seemed oddly wedged into this wack film and it made no sense. There were no 10 year olds listening to industrial metal in 1994. Jane’s addiction were in the first year of Lollapalooza in ‘91.

Hey I rowed in college and coached college after. She does well. I break it down to arms, body, legs on the recovery(coming up to take a stroke). Then legs, body, arms on the drive(taking a stroke). Most people at the gym screw up that sequencing and don’t get the shoulders in front of the hips on the recovery, and opening the body too early on the drive. Eric Murray (Nzl 2xGold) has a free you tube channel where you can erg along, he will coach you through it, give tips, Peloton like format.

Josh Crosby, the Apple Fitness Plus rowing instructor and "a world champion with the US National Rowing Team" teaches you to row like this:
60% of the power of the row is from your legs, so you start by pushing into the footboards like you're trying to jump into the wall behind you; once your legs are extended you get another 20% of power from your core, leaning from around a 2 o'clock position forward to 10 o'clock back; the final 20% is from your arms, pulling straight into you mid-chest. You reverse it on the way back.
It's all one smooth motion but in order, so like The Boyz say you don't start bringing you knees up until the handle has cleared them (because you've extended you arms and hinged forward).
And I would never, never tell anyone at the gym this. Never.

Wow, I wouldn't expect it to be so blatant. At least not in a capital city. Jesus.
Normally it's the sort of 'we don't see race' sort of shit where no one talks about it openly but it's baked into the way we treat people. From the day to day right-wing Murdock newspapers spouting tripe about 'African gangs' to high level politics. Hell, last year Australia held a referendum on recognising Aboriginal Australian in the constitution with a pretty inert Indigenous Voice to Parliament council and it was a resounding "No" vote. Wankers.

Hey Ben thanks so much for the rec on Jacobson's "Nuclear War." Now I gotta explain why I'm completely fucking checked out for the foreseeable future. Thrilling and terrifying read.
What do you think is scarier: "fire on warning" policy, the inability to recall/shut off nukes, or the seemingly inevitable failure of mutually assured destruction?

Meryl Streep’s salary for 'slumming it' in this movie was probably less than what Anthony Hopkins makes for showing up for two minutes in a Thor movie.

So at my high school our Cross Country coach was an absolute machine. He was known for biking all over the place and then slinging it on his back and running back to school. He was deaf and taught ASL classes. Our school team was pretty successful, but a guy in the class below me who trained under this Teacher/Coach went on to win an Olympic gold medal!

Great movie. I like how bacon and John C try the path of least resistance first and just try to get down the river without revealing their bad guys. Ben is right, they probably should have shown they’re real bad guys first, because im sure every trailer made back then showed that they were bad guys, it’s not a twist.

Not done with the episode yet, but I’m surprised the Boyz haven’t brought up that River Wild is Kevin Bacon’s SECOND heel turn in a white water rafting themed adventure movie. His first one was 1987’s “White Water Summer” with Sean Astin. The characters are so similar that the movie might as well be the Wade origin story.
EDIT: STANGER is the MVP of the episode for shouting out White Water Summer!
