Not sure when you lived there, but there hasn't historically been a lot of non-indigenous black people in Australia (compared to the US). Until 1976 there was a shitty "white australia" policy that prevented non-white immigration. In the past 20 or so years especially there's been a significant increase so I like to hope that attitudes are changing slowly. Unfortunately our crappy tabloid media like to stir up antagonism against black immigrants which isn't helped by the racist undercurrent in Australian culture. All this is to say that the people who told you to watch out for dangerous black people in Redfern probably don't know any black Australians or they watch too much local media.

But more importantly while I was there I found that this is the third movie to be titled Hurricane Smith?? I guess title reuse like that is more forgivable in the pre-internet age.

I got a work visa to go to Australia in my late 20s...it was awesome...that said, I went to the Museum of Tolerance and the exhibit was clear to point out that the Australian Government made sure to "study the mistakes made by the US Government in response to the American Civil Rights movement" to delay the passage of equal rights and fairness way past the 1960s. Furthermore, my gf and I lived in an incredibly cool district of Sydney called Redfern. At my job, everyone warned me that it was a dangerous neighborhood because black people lived there. They asked me how it compared to Brooklyn...I told them they were out of their minds, it was one of the most beautiful, safest places I ever lived...so, despite their famed cheeriness, people there are a bit insane to be kind...

I noticed the ADR too but I don't think they downplayed the accents. Shanks and Griffo are both doing a Sydney/Melbourne bogan thing, I think they're exaggerating for international audiences, putting some pepper on it. All the cab drivers are dead on accurate though. Honestly the most GC accents is the guy at the immigration office, who actually gives very accurate directions, (it is slightly further south, technically a few blocks south of Broadbeach in Mermaid Beach, but he was guessing). And ANZAC day is closer to veterans Day. Two Up was popular with WW1 and WW2 soldiers. It's clearly a joke when Shanks thinks the guy is on a roll like the coins have memory

Two up is illegal in Aus. Although you can legally play it on ANZAC day (April 25). I’ll be playing a few games and a having a few beers with my nearest and dearest at my local bowls club next week on the ANZAC day public holiday. Last year a kid no older than 12 fleeced me in two up too.
