Speaking on when he jumped on bow ties but he’s just always sort of on it, right?

Emily McCauley

Stanger was ahead of the curve. Accept it. I believe he always knows what’s up especially out of this three. Sorry love you all.

Emily McCauley

Update, it’s Newcomers pod. Comes out soon

Andrew Braswell

gabrus, poofter is a slur. if you wouldn't use the f-slur or t-slur please don't use that term.

Eliana

I was mildly disappointed

Pumpkin Pie Hair-Cutted Freak

I believe Rade Šerbedžija's country of origin dissolved with Yugoslavia. I heard on Pod Casty For Me he was one of those go to guys to represent Soviet decrepitude as a kind of ambassador for capitalism but he's been nostalgic for Titoism in recent interviews- maybe just because economics across the board deteriorated.

Sarah Tippishly

I typically don’t comment but fuck, I had to finally say something…….this was one of those episodes (along with Hard Times, Miller’s Crossing, and I think Yakuza) where I had to stop the podcast and go watch the movie for the first time. What a fucking treat.

Jacob Lucero

Wow, that last scene in the Jaaaag. Does Hoskins have more lower teeth than humans?

Hammerthrust Von Sexron

I was a defender of true detective s2 but now that I’ve seen this I’m a lot less charitable towards it. Pizzolatto basically lifted this entire plot for Vince Vaughns storyline. Thanks ABZ for incrementally increasing my media literacy

Joe B

Man I love to hear people sing the praises of Bob Hoskins. Truly a great actor. I highly recommend Felicia’s Journey. Hoskins is AMAZING in that.

Charlie Horgan

Anyone else notice the criterion channel looking just better in general than other streamers? I'm no expert, but even if something isn't being upscaled by the TV, some streaming material still has that video-like too many frames a second cheap look, especially when the camera pans across static stuff. Haven't noticed this bummer on criterion, maybe confirmation bias

Ant

You actually have lost your mind. Sorry.

Antti

Hoskins Wolverine, Jason Alexander Cyclops, John Polito Gambit, Larry David Professor X

Jon Smith

Great PBS docuseries on The Troubles: https://www.pbs.org/show/once-upon-time-northern-ireland/

Trevvie

Hoping this is on the list for the boyz in 2024

Jason E Becker

The Parky is Mine

Clifford

Anybody hunt down what pod they guested on talking Taxi Driver (1976)?

Andrew Braswell

Watched Peter Weir's The Plumber (1979) yesterday and was repeatedly distracted by the actor Robert Coleby because he looks exactly like Stanger. I've been on some medication lately, but I don't think I've lost my mind. It's a great little movie, too. youtube.com/watch?v=Bkz2JRwZ4Eg

Ken Collier

Our middle school sports field was called “Flutie Field” and he’d come to fundraiser events and things

Liz Arcury

Doug Flutie’s Florida home is in my hometown, Melbourne Beach! My parents still live there and we drive by his house all the time, the Batmobile is very visible lol. He talks to my dad when they see each other at the beach or either one of the only two local restaurants. We got all the behind the scenes about his Dancing with the Stars experience, he hated it and said they wanted him to participate in a fake dramatic “arc” and he refused 😂

Liz Arcury

I prefer the Octopus Murders

bloodflart

I don't think they have the fortitude to make it through half the first early Bond films

bloodflart

“GOD…DAMN!!! Stone, Nancy get in here” is my new favorite bit.-

Steakmoss

shout out forrest lawn!! i worked there

eric crahen

This movie IS the top ten Uk gangster flicks, unassailable. Oh and Statham? Started out as an Olympic high diver! No shit, check out the videos

Haunted Screen

Man I miss Stanger Bot

Flappy McGillicuddy-Jones III

Steven Seagal totally got ripped off. My Octopus's Teacher is the far superior film.

Swoll Tits

Stanger’s on fire this ep.

Sean Hutchinson

Great little story of Liam Neeson seeing Helen Mirren on set of Excalibur on Graham Norton. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoY0J5jSbTM&ab_channel=TheGrahamNortonShow

Scott Tammel

I recently watched Once Upon a Time in Northern Ireland. I had some basic facts down about the troubles but this for me did a great job to kind of put you in the mindset of how it was if you lived in and around those times. Its a very personal look at The Troubles and I find it very illuminating. https://www.pbs.org/show/once-upon-time-northern-ireland/

Scott Tammel

"SHUT UP, YOU LONG STREAK OF PARALYZED PISS!" Great movie, great OST.

Stephen Navarrete

Please accept my apology for shamefully commenting regarding Debt for the Enemy of the State episode. I'm filled with terror every time I comment and yet I still do it and I still mess up. Also, a good late career Hoskins is as the villain in Unleashed with Jet Li.

Arkady_84

Anyone else looking for a great Hoskins role check out Mona Lisa, IMO Neil Jordan's best movie and a classic lonely-loser-heartbroken-gangster movie.

David McElroy

I missed some of the details around Rodgers bringing up Brazil, but that's one of the movies I always think of when I think of Bob Hoskins. He has a great small part in that. And I loved him as J. Edgar Hoover in Nixon. Also not bad in Enemy at the Gates as Nikita Kruschev.

David Bauer

I'll have to check that out.

David Bauer

My husband and I watched Quicksand a few years ago and were wildly disappointed. We were shocked there was a movie with both Keaton & Caine in it that we’d never heard of but after watching it we were like “oh, that’s why.” At the very least we were expecting the “we didn’t know how good we had it” feeling that the Boyz often discuss but sadly not. Has anyone else seen it?

Jenn

Apparently Newcomers is doing Scorsese next

Graham Parker

Great book to check out about the Troubles is Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe. It's about a decades-old murder-kidnapping that implicates some key members of the IRA, including people like Gerry Adams. Some of the figures mentioned in the book were clearly magnetic personalities within the IRA in the sixties and inspired multiple works of fiction. You can tell for example that both Natasha Richardson's character in The Crying Game and the red-haired Irish terrorist in Patriot Games are both inspired by the same real-life IRA activist who was implicated in the murder-kidnapping in Say Nothing. It's a great read if you want to learn more about the history of the region.

Eric Manch

Northern Ireland is Church of England - Protestant. Ireland is a mostly Catholic country. It's sectarian violence. But also Ireland doesn't like England on their island

Chabnormal

For me this movie is in the top 1% of ABZ movies. I'd never seen it until a couple of years ago when Tim Simons was hyping it up on twitter. I do think the plot is a little muddy in that what does it matter that Colin skimmed because the IRA guys who knew he skimmed immediately got murdered. It was the IRA pinning that murder on Harold that mattered I think. But who cares 5 stars.

Mitch Kapa

Sooo all the content so far is just bs and riffs… I’m still in… 🤓

Thomas

Normally the people who own/run a pub are called the landlord, though I do like pub master

Bobby Nitro

Lmao at Shaggy the Draft Dodger

MB

Just watched this movie for the first time at work. Wow! Great pick guys.

RutgerHauerPowerHour

“Stop picking on Stanger! He can talk about Santa whenever he wants—anytime of the year! 😡”

Paul

I miss Flutie's Neugenix commercials.

Michael Pemulis

Holy shit this movie fucken ruled. Thanks for the intro to it

Loose Goose

So what is the podcast they referenced guesting on? Random thought, would love a Shadow Wolves covering Who's Harry Crumb

Thea Michailides

Rade Serbedzija broke through to international audiences and was cast in ‘The Saint’, ‘MI:II’, et al. because of his performance in a great movie called ‘Before the Rain’ that’s streaming on the Criterion Channel.

Frank Kimball

Licensing isn’t always great with older soundtracks on streaming services. But this score is actually on Spotify!

Sam Riebesehl (Reeb-Uh-Shell)

Gabrus explaining the high and might intro to Biden got me good.

Megan

As someone who once accidentally took a big bite of food full of maggots, I'd describe the sensation as similar to eating Rice Krispies or caviar without the saltiness

Berko Pierce

I don't really "get" Roger Rabbit either. Not my bag. Not enough temporal pincer movements

MB

Sometimes, theres a man, well he’s the man for his time and place. He fits right in there. And that’s Bob Hoskins

PatrickKilbrogan

Good episode 👍

The Buffmaster

"London will be Europe's capital" opposite of Brexit right?

bloodflart

Between that and Roger Rabbit I loved Bob Hopkins as a kid

bloodflart

Helen Mirren is the smokest of shows

bloodflart

As good as Bob Hoskins is in this, he’s even better in ‘Mona Lisa’, which is also streaming on the Criterion Channel and Max.

Frank Kimball

Young is relative when it comes to his big ole head

bloodflart

Yea the subtitle typer def never heard of an abattoir! Also they were just wrong sometimes. Pretty good stuff.

David McElroy

Awesome book!

David McElroy

For Stanger, "Unleashed," with Jet Li has Hoskins as a gangster co-lead and was pretty decent.

Christopher Davis

Loved this movie, watched it with the subtitles on because some of the British slang was hard to catch. And it clearly wasn’t just me. Whoever was in charge of the subtitles must have been American. Multiple times when people were talking, they just gave up and wrote [inaudible] for half the lines ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Sam Riebesehl (Reeb-Uh-Shell)

Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe Great book about the troubles. The Audiobook is narrated by Matthew Blaney who has a beautiful Irish accent. Starts with the people who were “disappeared” by the IRA as a jumping-off point, but covers all of the Troubles.

VHSMIA

Holy shit, I watched this last night and it’s amazing. The amount of European actors in this who I’ve seen in a million things is crazy. Great movie.

ShangDangus

Spotting a young Brick Top was a nice surprise

Gilligan(The marooned Ranchero)

Don’t single out that Stanger lies. Now every time he speaks I 2nd guess everything he’s saying.

Don Knott Steiner

This was great, thanks a bunch for making me check it out.

Dark Angel Of The Year

I pulled a Stanger and accidentally watched The Long Goodbye starring Elliott Gould and an uncredited mustachioed Schwarzenegger. Not disappointed.
