First Blood (1982)

The boyz discuss First Blood.

First Blood (1982)

Comments

First Blood takes place in a town called Hope and was filmed in the town of Hope, British Columbia (about 90 mins from Vancouver)...so they didn't have to change any signs.

Sean Goodman

I’m here for the Columbo impressions

Goodgwill Hunting

Beastmaster been around since… who knows

ElNiñoAccióN

I stopped the episode midway because of Stanger and Rodgers talking about how incredible the book was. Picked it up and read it in its entirety before coming back and I have to say goddamn, what a great book. Thanks for the recommendation, I have shared it with a couple buddies who picked it up as well and I never would have known about it otherwise. The descriptions of death, dying, and the self-deluded attempts to justify your behaviors to yourself were so vivid, nuanced, and relatable. Do yourselves a favor and pick it up if you are at all curious.

So Alf Humphreys who played Lester had his nose fractured during the police station fight scene when Stallone elbowed the shit out of him in the face. My man didn’t need anytime in the makeup chair. His bandages and bruising was 💯 real.

RutgerHauerPowerHour

Put stanger on a jet ski and he’s done… kaput!

Thomas

Yesssssss. Finally a movie that kicks off with a town being immediately and weirdly racist against Italians

Jean Cahill

Famously Buddy Joe Hooker was mentioned in the Hooper film as the only other stuntman that could pull the rocket car over the gorge gag.

Buddy Jones

Broforce is great. Rodgers mentioned Contra as the perfect game. I would recommend Blazing Chrome as a really good indie spiritual successor to the 16-bit Contra 3.

Thatguy

I realized while you were talking about the Rambo monologue that the end of the Stallone Orange Julius sketch is him doing a parody of that monologue.

Don Knott Steiner

Finished the book Sunday, listened to the ep Monday then had a vivid dream that Rodgers called me saying he got a job drawing sketches for the Encyclopedia of Writers and Rimbaud was next but needed me to write the encyclopedia entry asap. Thanks for ruining my brain Action Boyz.

JamieQT

I live 34 minutes outside of Hope. I've been up to the mine that they used for the cave in the movie back in the late 80s

sean o'malley

Gabrus, may your 2024 shine bigger and brighter than the previous year 🌟

Daniel_

Same, and I've been a patron since who knows

JeanDammeClaudeVan

Great episode. This makes me want to read the book

Kevin Hames

Maybe the cleaning chemicals are getting to me but Stangers jet ski story was new to me. Keep the stories coming!

Happy New year! Listened to the episode and was wondering towards the end what Gabrus was going to say when the whole "Baby Killer" part of the speech came up. Wikipedia seems to cover it in a fairly balanced manner. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myth_of_the_spat-on_Vietnam_veteran#:~:text=There%20is%20a%20persistent%20myth,often%20yelling%20%22baby%20killer%22.

Anyone else recall hearing that some sounds from the Sega game golden axe were lifted from first blood, specifically Caruso?

Ant

Always solid, can make even a true pos like "deathship" tolerable.

When I was about 12 years old (1987), I went to a flea market and found a stall where a guy was not only selling sweet 1980's Survival Knives, but was willing to sell them to a 12 year old. That summer, I took the knife with me to the family cabin because I wanted to fuck around in the forest and "survive" like I was Rambo - it had the compass, the wire saw, fishing line and hooks, matches, the whole program. Anyway, my grandfather caught me with this massive knife and quickly confiscated it and ratted me out to my parents. Fast forward to 2007 when my grandfather died, my uncle came to me and was like "I don't know what dad was doing with this knife, but I figure you seem like you'd like this, so I saved it for you." Not only did I finally get that knife back, but I still have it to this day. As a preteen kid in the late 80's, I can't emphasize enough how cool and awesome we all thought these things were. Anyway...I'm off to hunt a hog, thanks for letting me share.

Nathan Rodriguez

Time is a flat circle I guess. Funny that First Blood showed in an ep 2 weeks before it’s actual episode.

David

I was for sure that kid.

Nathan Rodriguez

Just loving all the Crenna appreciation on this show. Wait Until Dark is a fun-as-hell thriller with Audrey Hepburn, Alan Arkin and Richard Crenna. Always loved him after that.

Charlie Horgan

We recorded the silent partner episode in November.

Gabrus, Rodgers, and Stanger

No, we did not.

Gabrus, Rodgers, and Stanger

Liking it so far?

Alex Muraviov

Never thought I'd be listening to the audio book of First Blood, but here we are. It's pretty fun.

Hope, which is the actual name of where this movie was shot, is about 2.5 hrs west of where I live. Best thing they have in that town is a Rambo standee that you put your face in.

JarredPalmer

Hell yeah

With the Epstein names being released, this week, Centauri's got to be sweating.

Michael Pemulis

Also I did have a knockoff version of that knife. Long gone now but what a great (terrible?) dad for getting me one.

Joshua C Day

I will be reading the book as soon as it arrives. Thanks for the suggestion!

Joshua C Day

One of the first action movies I remember watching with my dad. I actually never picked up on how heavy it was and how Vietnam was a nightmare for so many back then. I just loved the vibe of scenery and the fact that John J fought back against injustice (defund Teasley) and used his environment to survive. anyway. I was openly weeping multiple times thinking of my dad (he’s been dead for 17 years) and the horrors of war but much like Big John would whisper I just “shut if off”. Thanks as always for the laughs, insight and nostalgia Action Boyzzzzz

Joshua C Day

Very good Stanger

David

This episode being recorded before Silent Partner took him by surprise

tire

You guys were quoting First Blood during the Silent Partner episode

David

Dang I fell asleep half way through the other night, was going to finish rewatch today but Paramount removed all the Rambos today. Now I'm googling "rambo 3 movie collection", no thanks on the 4 or 5 movie collection.

Dan Skisak

How many people knew a kid that had one of those compass handle/wood saw combo knife?

Hammerthrust Von Sexron

?

Gabrus, Rodgers, and Stanger

AFistfulofGwildors

This episode being recorded before Silent Partner took me by surprise.

David

Steve Stevens!

Dave McM

👏🏻 Adds in the Man With No Name element too.

Dave McM

I didn’t think so either

Dave McM

Oooft! That’s an eye-opening, penny-dropping lesson. 😳

Dave McM

Jack reacher is the same premise as First Blood really, except updated to the Iraq war and with changes to help it with serialisation.

Eugenio Triana

Sylvester Stallone Script Note #101 “what if Rambo befriended the dogs?”

Canadian Day Player

Happy New Year Action Boyz and Janitors. I live 30 minutes from Hope, and it's a classic Canadian small town that loves that Rambo was shot there. On the main street there is a wooden statue of Rambo, and a life size painting of Rambo with the face cut out so you can put your face in the hole and take a picture. In the early 2000's I blew the hubcaps off my Hyundai Pony going over that train track "ramp", even after it was re-graded so it wasn't such a launching pad.

Tyler Simpson

The band Radiohead is named after Stephen Toblowsky

bloodflart

Sick!

bloodflart

Has Stanger told that jet ski story before? Didn’t sound very familiar

Mike Cooper

You guys would LOVE the game BroForce. It’s literally every action boyz icon in a modernized contra side scroller.

Alex Muraviov

He also does some voices from time to time.

Daniel the spaniel

My husband got a paramount account because he is trying to get me into Star Trek, and it’s fine, but I really liked lower decks. I also got excited this past season when I saw Rodgers name as a supervisor so it’s a bummer if he’s not on the show anymore, I’m sure he offered a unique perspective!

Rebe K

I had the Rambo big wheel with the 2 guns coming out of the front. I was the baddest MF at my preschool when they let us bring our tricycles.

Daniel the spaniel

2024 is gonna be your year. Yes you, the one reading Patreon comments. I have faith

Joe B

I went through a bunch of David Morrell's books, a while back, and, other than First Blood, the one I think about the most is Testament. It is so depressing and unrelentingly grim; I wish it been made into a movie, in the 80s, just to see how they would've rounded the edges, for a more box office friendly version.

Michael Pemulis

Person of color here. Ahem, we fuck with this film for its relatability. They treat Rambo like regular everyday blacks in America.

Crown Jules

Happy New Year everyone! I hope 2024 brings you health and happiness. Nearly 3hrs on a classic is a grand start, should pass the journey to first foot the mother-in-law. 👏🏻 Lang may yer lum reek! ❤️

Dave McM

Happy New year Action Boyz. Also Janitors.

Keith Jarrett

Happy New Years. I took a bunch of MD 🫡

Big Junior

The episode length can only go up from here! Right action boyz?
