KINNPORSCHE E5 - UNCUT

KINNPORSCHE E5 - UNCUT

Comments

If you want to argue this storyline makes for dramatic tv, or that it brings up good talking points then great, but it scares me that young people could watch this and feel like this is a romantic plot line or a relationship to look up to

Hannah Howden

i love that show!

Janine M Hall

I really really wish you would’ve picked Moonlight Chicken as your first BL….

Josy 👀

it makes so much more sense upon rewatching, and once you have more Asian/ Thai / BL references under your belt . I felt like you the first time, but to a lesser extent, because I had been watching the trailers and teasers and interviews for a whole year before it aired . Going into KP fully unprepared was indeed rather bold of them .

Saye

Josh‘s reactions are pretty much like mine watching KP. „What the hell is happening?“ „Did this scene make any sense?“ „This is so chaotic!“ „Why this music now?“ I enjoyed it more when I stopped trying to make sense of it and just went with it. There are still parts und bits I didn‘t like or that felt over the top for me, but approaching this show with western standards of logic and storytelling does not work, at least it did not work for me.

You guys should watch Pitbabe next!!

Kendall Rian

Oh! That’s horrible.

Trixy_loves_the _world

I think if you had started with a more traditional Heartstopper-style BL series, it might have better represented the genre for a first time watch. However, you would have probably been a lot more stunned by Kinnporsche when you got around to it. Maybe jumping in the deep end here and seeing the whole series will actually make some of the "lighter" BL series even more interesting. I just finished watching Jazz for Two and I really enjoyed it. It's a polar opposite style to the gangster BL genre that is very popular. Finishing it as I was starting KP with you guys, really made me appreciate the diversity of BL. Great reaction as always!

DC

The music is meant to suggest we are watching things from the point of view of Porsche who is under the effect of drugs . It is also meant to make us feel uncomfortable, as it contrasts sharply with the reality of the situation. Someone else wrote about it at length in the comments . Love in the mafia world is "tainted love". The music is a calculated prop here , just like the lights.

Saye

Jeff ❤️❤️❤️

I agree! LITA is very enjoyable but not exactly a palate cleanser after kp!

Was about to say this. Engineering student falls in love with architecture student trope!

Janine M Hall

I think in the last couple of years bl has moved away from this dynamic in a lot of cases and you have a lot more gay directors and writers having input so it is moving in a better direction. Bls have been around for a long time now in Thailand so there are so many and they vary in plot and characters as much as straight shows would.

Janine M Hall

Episode 6 is my favourite lol

Janine M Hall

I love your reactions! Your reactions to KinnPorsche are very much in line with my own when I watched it and it was also my first BL. I will say that NOT all bls have a power imbalance and they vary in genre, storyline and chemistry as much as hetero shows would here. I hope you check some more out as there is a lot of good ones. I strongly recommend Not Me as I think you would both love it and also Bad Buddy. Both of those were the ones I watched after KinnPorsche. KP as a whole is a wild ride which I still enjoyed over all but there are many more I prefer.

Janine M Hall

Can’t wait for y’all to see the next episode

Sallie Andrea

Just fyi it was turned on/added! Watched it late last night. Surprisingly ok! Not as bad as I was expecting so there’s hope yet for this watch along! Yasssssss! 😉

Shelby Frost Bay

Yes I agree. I love their comments on this series, cause as you said, they are both really openminded and reflective, while not shying away from adressing when they think something is problematic, still with a mix of serious and funny. Maybe their next BL after KinnPorsche should be something a bit lighter/more easily digestable to see the contrast to this, because I hope they will react to more BL in the future.

Sara Nissen

Thanks for this reaction, I love it!!! From what I read in some of the comments here and with what you shared on IG, I can see that some people think this was the wrong choice for a first BL reaction, you „feeling uncomfortable“ takes away from the reaction or that you’re not into the series or not used to the asian BLs for it to react „properly“. I strongly disagree with that. You reacting to KP gave me the final kick to finally become a patreon member (as a BL lover) and I not only love your reactions, but I‘m also over and over again impressed by how reflected and careful you guys comment on this. You show a lot of knowledge in human nature and empathy! You pick up on subtle things, you try to view and comment on things from different perspectives and you point out on difficult topics and don’t shy away from talking about it. I feel like you’re going into this really open minded. And next to all that needed and appropriate seriousness you still manage to be very funny. So I‘m having 0 regrets to have subscribed and am enjoying every second of your reaction! Thank you! 💜💜💜

NaNaNa_Naaaa

and there I am with ep6 being my fav 🙃 I love how we’re all enjoying or getting annoyed by different things ☺️

NaNaNa_Naaaa

I don't think it's a criticism to say that someone isnt enjoying a particular depiction. Im just saying, if they don't find the least problematic pairing enjoyable, I have real doubt they'll like the other storylines.

Cassy G

There . Corrected, I think.

I loved the actors in LITA, but the writing was so bad.

Lisa M T

If was off key. Probably on purpose to show Porchay is a novice. Barcode isn't the singer that Jeff is.

Lisa M T

This is very close to a spoiler.

Lisa M T

It was a lot more clear it was a sexual assault.

Lisa M T

Having read the comments to date, nothing really new to add, only to say that Chan is Daddy, and I hope you come to love him as so many of us do <3 Ep6 Is my *least* favourite of the season, (not because of what it does for the character arcs) so I'm interested to see whether the same things annoy you guys about it or not lol

Lillijen

Right, like there's so many more cute/fluffy/slice of life BLs they could've suggested. Even me, a seasoned bl watcher KP was a bit much for me. I think it's b/c the initial poll was on YouTube . I remember b/c I cringed so much when I saw KP and cutie pie as top two. It honestly seems like most people who voted were not regular ASWT watchers otherwise KP wldnt have won the poll

Luna

PS: Kim doesn’t live with them at the compound, Pete said he left to live on his own. He also “left” the mafia, but not really. He is trying to find the mole, which is why he thinks Porsche somewhat infiltrated their ranks, bc he was a bartender with nothing beyond fighting skills. He said to his father he usually just grabs ex military, ex cops or people he trained since childhood. Porsche nit only came with not the standard background, but he got to basically be head bodyguard for the de facto heir/interim mafia boss in his first day. The thing about power dynamics is they are present in most medias, not just BLs and not just Asian. I’m talking about this because it’s been a movement around social media to demonize eastern productions when they introduce heavy themes. Themes that are very much for adults and while inside said piece of fiction they can not exactly address between the characters “this is wrong”, but it’s generally understood. But it’s still fiction and fiction can introduce any theme. Now, there’s a lot of media for youth that also dives into this themes. Lack of consent being romanticized for couples that are taken as “goals” exist in western media as well. I already commented I think past episode, but I hate how western people tend to demonize these tropes done in animes or BLs while not admitting Hollywood is filled with them. I already used the Damon Salvatore example, he abused a 17yo he compelled, and he had sex and fed from her during the period she was hypnotized. In a tv show for adolescents. Same with Gossip girl. Now, in adult media we have Game of Thrones, which has a lot of gratuitous sexual violence for shock value, mainly women. People generally perceive it’s wrong, and medieval times have different moral values and same can be applied here. This is a mafia show. Kinn is to inherit the throne for the biggest mafia family in his country. He doesn’t have the standard set of moral values, but he at least has his own moral compass and seems to care somewhat, which is more than most mafia members would. Bodyguards are taught to be things, they are shields. They are there to protect the family above all else, including their life. Whatever they do it for? Money, loyalty, etc. but this is the sort of dynamic they are trained in. That said, KP does a good job addressing this particular event while realistically sticking to their universe. The production seemed concerned about it and they also leave it very clearly from the first episode these are not morally good people. They have nuance, they can be nice and good, but they are also criminals. This is organized crime. They steal, they assault, they commit fraud, they torture and they murder, without blinking or even remorse. Vegas is implied to be a serial assaulter when he says he won’t force Porsche but he is interested once he fights back. The show itself acknowledged that for the audience even if not for the characters. Porsche himself is not a totally upstanding citizen. He fights illegally, he offered help to a stranger about to be kidnapped in exchange of money (didn’t have to help at all of course, but this is still somewhat blackmail), he has sex with drunk clients in the alley (often drunk himself). A lot he does because he has too but it’s still a choice. The music, it’s supposed to signify what Porsche feels. At the time with Kinn, he was feeling good and free, same with Vegas. But then at the light of day he felt different. And if he knew what Vegas did, he would feel different too. Just keep in mind the very theme of the show should be warning enough they will portray people who are problematic. Again, criminals. A lot of them sociopaths. Who enjoy doing horrific things most of the general population would find appalling. Pretty sure the age restriction is 21. A lot of bad things these characters do will have no consequences and they wouldn’t even acknowledge that’s a bad thing. They liked doing it and would again. Kinn himself probably doesn’t even know how to act as a normal person. He was born a mafia heir. And even he was affected by what happened, and demonstrated remorse. Something Vegas clearly didn’t, and that was a contrast they show here. At the same time, Kinn still clings to his need to assert dominance and be in control. These are not black and white situations and not a normal set up. There’s truly no way for this to be unproblematic because it’s set in the criminal underworld and it involves criminals. Their way of life is different. I think to watch (and enjoys this, you need to be able to acknowledge enjoying characters who do bad things do not mean you endorse the bad things they do or you think they are a good person bc you like them as a character. It’s fiction. These people make mistakes, and you can hate them or love them, while still knowing it’s just a story with a goal of entertaining and portraying a different world.

Vish

🎬👏🏽👏🏼👏🏾👏🏻. You are such good hearted people. Thank you. Problematic😖… if that was problematic… oh I’m getting worried about the impact of things much later in the series. Not about K&P but other interactions. You already know parts of this story get dark so this is not a spoiler. I’m just worried🫤. You two are so fantastic🥰🥰 and I want you to stay that way. I , as your fan, personally give you full permission to say you have had enough, of this series, at any time. 🫂&💋x2 👋🏼

Trixy_loves_the _world

Here's the thing. I've been watching you guys for a while and i know your vibe, and knew from the get go that there were going to be themes in this BL that you'd find difficult to watch, which is absolutely valid. However, there are plenty of BL's that don't follow these dynamics that I think you would genuinely love e.g Bad Buddy, Semantic Error, Bluemings. So i do find it strange that people have recommended KinnPorche as your FIRST BL and i don't want you to be super offput by that because for example Bad Buddy is so wholesome and gives me a heartstopper/kings of communication/star-crossed lover Romeo and Juliet vibes and is just so much more up your ally. I get people wanting to see reactions to the thing they love, and i am immensely enjoying your reactions, but i'd just also love to watch you watch a BL i know the two of you could really get into and enjoy whole heartedly.

Emilia

KinnPorshe was one of my first BLs so it does hold a place in my heart for introducing me to the genre because it one of my fav genres now for past 2-3 years and kept me sane during the pandemic year(s). Otherwise though, I don't rewatch it much, so this is like my first rewatch since at least when it first came out. Certain eps of KP can def be problematic and there are definitely better BL dramas airing currently and in the past (Tale of A Thousand Stars has been mentioned. I'll also add my overall fav Until We Meet Again), but overall I did enjoy KP and after being into BLs now for a while, there are DEF more problematic series than KP by a mile! I def think it's great to see what your ultimate review of KP will be once it's all said and done. For now though, I'm happy to rewatch it again with your fresh eyes.

nellybell47

“Power imbalance” I’m starting to worry about the number of BL stories that present these kinds of relationships. A gangster is a glamorized fascist. Really no other way to put it. Plus there are strict laws in Thailand that prohibit any citizen saying anything negative about the King. A beautiful young protester just recently died during a hunger stricken in prison. I’m saying that domination is “the royalist thing” for the Thai people. They don’t want it to be that way anymore than any other people. Pushing the “beauty & the beast” narrative has always smacked of narcissistic persuasion. How do the good hearted people handle the fascists/narcissists in this world? Love them out of their narcissism? IDK. I’ve dealt with too many narcissistic lovers to see that as clearly as I should🤔🧐

Trixy_loves_the _world

I will note that while I'm a fan of Love in the Air, in each couple there's one person who completely ignores the concept of consent in the beginning of the relationship. If they want a breather from KinnPorsche I'd lean towards a show that doesn't do that.

Haras

Thank you for pointing out the inappropriate mood music in poor situations. I didn’t notice it before🤔.

Trixy_loves_the _world

Did you notice that Kinn’s “friend”, this time, looked a lot like Porsche? Even wearing a white dress shirt & black pants.

Trixy_loves_the _world

I am so excited for you to watch more episodes as you will see that what you think might happen may or may NOT happen. So many twists and turns in this series. Oh and btw the song that Barcode...oops I mean Porchay was singing in the studio was actually written by Jeff Satur who plays Kim/Wik. It is a beautiful song and worth a listen to ....Why Don't You Stay is the title and it is a really emotional song. Jeff Satur had a concert in Bangkok and almost all the actors from Kinn Porsche showed up for it and then came the time for Jeff to sing this song and you could see that it affected the actors...especially Mile who actually was crying during the song. It is on youtube if you want to see it.

D.A. Rowley

Yes, of course!

Michael Craig

“In the novel series it’s a lot “more”… more? Is it a lot more abusive non consensual or the other way and more loving?

Trixy_loves_the _world

Both of these of course, but also the very characteristic spiky bottle of Remy Martin cognac.

Saye

Another great reaction from you guys. This episode is really the start of the next arc with Kinn and Porsche's relationship. Its messy and problematic but there is a really interesting journey to it. Also please don't let KP completely turn you off trying other BLs cause there are tons of nice ones with more 'normal' relationships. Regarding Porchay and Kims relationship. I won't go into spoilers but I will say that Porchay's actor (Barcode) was underage at the time of filming about 16/17 so about the same age as his character. Kim is supposed to be around 21ish but there is a large age gap of about 10 years between the actors. Kim's actor (Jeff) was around 27 at the time of filming but Jeff was very close and protective of Barcode during production and still is supportive to this day so was very firm about certain limits. You will have to just wait and see how their relationship develops.

Natalie A

This episode had a more subtle product placement than most, which fits the mood better. I'm pretty sure it's the shower systems: Porsche does take multiple showers this episode...and remember when Josh said, "Stop panning down!"? Well, also the motorcycle...

Michael Craig

To be authentic to the show, I'd drink whisky...but for people who need fluffier options, Thai iced tea would work too. Side note: Kinn puts too much ice in his drinks, yes?

Michael Craig

😂👏🏼 That isn’t a bad idea..

Ruth May

You’re absolutely correct.

Ruth May

Oh, I’m laughing my ass off watching you two! 🤣

Kramtomat

"Struggling" was perhaps not the best word to use, as you're right, they have no problem accepting anything. "Befuddled" is more what I'm going for. The guys are learning about Asian drama storytelling style, Asian series/BL tropes, AND reading subtitles and trying to follow the story. All while trying to provide meaningful reactions and commentary. They've got a lot on their plate watching KinnPorsche!

Ivy Yap

When I think of my all time worst nightmare corporate job, it would be working as the head of HR for this family company...there aren't enough baht in the world to make it worth it...

Michael Craig

A random thought on the power imbalance thing. I think BL has it's roots in internet fanfic...mostly straight women writing for a straight woman audience. I'm not a straight woman, but I can certainly see how the power imbalance of everyday life and love can be a very important and interesting theme to explore. Also, I think it's fair to say that Confucian/East Asian societies are hierarchical in a way that is unsettling to us individualist Westerners. Porsche is quite unusual in his lack of respect for the social order (one of the things I love most about him).

Michael Craig

Bravo! So well said!

Michael Craig

I'm honestly loving your reaction, it's the first time I subscribed to a patreon actually cause I literally could not wait for your videos. Thank you for your discussion on certain things, it's refreshing to hear what people who aren't used to BL think.

Martina

So a bit of a downside to BL is that power imbalance comes from the idea of there needs to be a strict top/bottom dynamic. Because of this there are actually very few BLs where the couple is verse or anything in between.

Samurai_Bre

I think the true production quality and the different vibe of Kinnporsche will only become apparent to you after you watch a few more Thai BLs. Right now you don't know what the norm is, so you aren't able to fully appreciate how Kinnporsche is different to other Thai BLs. Only then can you understand why it's so popular compared to other Thai BLs that came before this one.

suga93hoodie

Yess, all of this. Microexpressions, change of light, hints and metaphors, all sorts of details that are easy to miss... This show has so many layers and it's easy to just glide over the surface without digging deep enough - and get a totally wrong impression as a result.

Mikomi

Right which is what I said in my comment…

nuwildcat

because chill is boring? xD But yeah, I agree that this show may be not the best one to start cause then the bar will be too high

Mikomi

Also Tankhun can be considered just a comedy relief, but he's far from it, and I believe scene by the pool shows us exactly that. He does care about Kim, they have quite a nice brotherly bond, even if they're teasing each other, and Tankhun knows exactly what Kim is doing and even wants to get some info from him. But he covers it all up with extravagant behavior so ppl don't take him seriously.

Mikomi

Yeah this is a good point. Nowadays there's more varied BLs, both in terms of storyline and visuals but KP was really the first to break the mold in a mainstream way. Also I'm just gonna say it, Apo acted circles around most BL roles. He really elevated the show in a lot of ways.

Tina Oestreich

I don't think the music is weird, it's just not always creating the mood for the viewers in a direct way, like romantic = scene is supposed to be perceived as a romantic one. Yes, sometimes it does work this way, but not all the time, and definitely not in KinnPorsche case. Sometimes it reflects one of the characters' POVs, sometimes it's a mixed signal or indication that smth is off... it's just more nuanced and complex, so it's better to focus on details and keep that in mind. I know it can be tricky sometimes, I also didn't catch everything from the first time, especially when you have also to read subtitles and can be distracted by a convo. But I don't think it's a specific Asian drama or BL thing, I see it a lot in Western series too.

Mikomi

God I found Love in the Air just... really bland? And not really all that much better or more engaging in dealing with complicated issues.

Tina Oestreich

Love to hate him lol. His actor is so good at portraying that seemingly innocent old man

Tina Oestreich

I just want to chime in and respectfully disagree, in the sense that I think Alex and Josh are doing better than expected at accepting the parts of Asian shows that us western audiences often find "quirky." I'm happy they are finding humor in the silly moments and overall accepting the flow and the acting styles. I personally find their criticism of the problematic parts both reasonable and responsible. In the end, they are continuing with the show, so they haven't dismissed the whole thing.

emmadilemma

I want to share my Kinn?Porsche drinking game: take a shot every time someone mentions 'trust' in any form...take two shots any time any form of 'lets start over' is mentioned.

Michael Craig

I feel like it's not so much a thai culture thing more that BL is romance and it shares the problematic aspects of some romance. You can't read certain romance without some sort of distance. It's about lust, exploring the gray areas and beautiful people being messy. You need to know what you getting into when it comes to Kinnporche...There are other BL that much more "real", that are more about the relationships and so on. There are fluffy BLs, thoughtful and mature Bls. The thing that differentiates them from queer series (which also exists in Asia) is that, just like most things that are classified as romance, they should have a happy ending. With all this said, I love Kinnporche, it actually got me through some real tuff times trying to deal with my families reaction to my queerness. I love it because I love just existing in the dreamworld of BL. The production value of Kinnporsche is so high and there is just something to it, like being served a favorite meal...but you have to know what you are getting into. Maybe it's not a gourmet meal but sometimes that is not what you need. Some days are for greasy cheesy food. <3

Yowela M

No pain, no gain . KP has a lot of addicted fans , it can attract many new subscribers and so, create more incentive for Josh and Alex to keep reacting to BL . Et voilà !

Saye

I love watching reactions by thoughtful (and funny) people like you guys. I have watched this show a few times through, but watching this reaction actually made me notice a few new details about the character's responses to the terrible incident in episode 4. It's always good to get others' perspectives! As a note, even BL fans don't generally appreciate the problematic tropes that are currently part of the genre. As viewers we have to forgive a lot in this show "because mafia," but it is still upsetting. Believe it or not , compared to other BLs it was refreshing that KinnPorsche even portrayed that (episode 4) in a negative light with the mood of this episode. However, as fans we still don't forgive it "because BL." As ironic as it may be for an LGBTQ specific genre, many of us would like more progressive stories.

emmadilemma

We all have our problematic faves. Mine is Gu Hai from Addicted Heroin, so I get it, even if Vegas isn't for me. The fact that Bible seems like a walking green flag of a human being irl always makes me so happy though.

Steph K

Watching these reactions has been painful. Why cldnt people vote for a chill BL as a first intro to this world 😞

Just a small reminder, characters like the father of the Main Family, Korn, never use small talk for no reason . Even one single sentence missed and it's a valuable hint or a stepping stone that goes missing . That , and the fact that a part of the text goes untranslated or lost in translation, will explain why sometimes you don't get the explanation or forewarning you're supposed to . There are also supposed to be props or visuals clues used as symbols meaningful to the story . The chessboard is an obvious one, the guns, the clothes, the mirrors/ windows . Less obvious, the main characters' minute shifts in expression or posture, and hesitations in speech, the too many drinks, the use of a specific light for a given character (in episode 5 it was evident which was Porsche's) , the running metaphor of a certain element for the main couple . KinnPorsche is the kind of show that needs to be rewatched, and needs the viewer's attention . A bit like the Twin Peaks of BL . It also likes sending the viewer on a false lead ...

Saye

We can all agree that KinnPorsche La Forte is a mess ; it was even the usual caption right under the title for many blogs, reviews and posts . The situation is messy, the characters are messy, and at some points, the plot is overall messy , albeit intriguing and exciting ( it gets even a bit sloppy at times, I don't always relish the slapstick comedy and sudden silly gags, a bit OTT for me). OR the show deliberately messes with our emotions . Some people hate that and dropped the show, others like me lap it up. Cooing vanilla characters with a perfect love arc bore me fast, I'm afraid . Because that's NOT what I got to experience in real life . Messy I can deal with , because it gives us tension, uncertainty, expectations . It's a roller-coaster and a wild ride, you won't get a second helmet, brace yourself . You'll be okay, we will be there with you till the very last seconds of episode 14 .

Saye

Shhhhhhh! lol😂🤫 but you’re right!

SukiyakiTango

KinnPorsche asks for a shift in perspective for them, quite true. But I gage that if they have watched Queer As Folks, then they know what flawed characters are.

Saye

How many shows can take place in the engineering department at a university lol.

Kimberley

Ep 6 is my favorite episode

Kimberley

Love in the Air was my first BL and I fell in love! 100+ BLs later there is no turning back! BossNoeul are one of my favorite couples along with PondPhuwin and MeenPing. AiLongNhai is my comfort drama I’ve watched it several times. I just love it!

Jessica Danowski

Kinn’s father as a major influence can easily be overlooked because the more obvious focus is on Kinn, Porsche and their relationship and then the minor family, especially Vegas. But Kinn’s father is a master chess player who has been manipulating the chess pieces from the beginning and exactly how and why isn’t revealed until much later. Another easily overlooked character is Kim, but in my opinion, he’s the most dangerous player of all.

Ruth May

😂👏🏼 I don’t think Alex and Josh are ready for the full Vegas effect!

Ruth May

Absolutely agree with this. KinnPorsche was a real game changer.

Ruth May

Yay! Someone else who loves Love In The Air! 👏🏼✨🥰 I absolutely adore this show and have high hopes for Boy Next World which is filming now and has the Boss/Noeul partnership in it again. It’s a lot fluffier than KinnPorsche but has its dark or sad moments too.

Ruth May

I love that you guys picked up on the music and that others have mentioned it in the comments. I even encourage you going back to episode 4 and considering the music choice in the final scene. Who's POV are we looking at in that moment? I think that gives you a lot more perspective on why they chose the music that they did, and also why it unsettled you so much. Also you may have noticed but the music that plays when Porsche recalls the bathroom scene is a lot more haunting. The visuals are uncomfortable and the music echoes that. You mention Kinn's reactions a lot in this episode, and yeah he's a dick, but you also bring up the mafia element more in your commentary with this episode. I think there's a really deep layer there that makes all of this more complicated for Kinn. His dad questioning his actions after the diamond auction, the gossip getting around the house about what went down, all of it feeds into how Kinn interacts with Porsche. He fucks it up a lot but as you pointed out, that's a normal thing for people to do. Anyway, love the commentary, can't wait to see what you guys think of the next episode. tl:dr: Kinn's an idiot in a shitty place and the music is supposed to be weird.

nuwildcat

i think you guys will like the next episode the most out of the one's you have watched so far. i don't want to spoil anything so i'll just leave it at that lol

Hana Eccleston

Highlight of my week!

Len

The musical aspect is one of my least favorite in Thai shows. There are some exceptions though. Thai shows make strange musical choices in general, strange pieces of music and strange pairings of scenes and types of music. Sometimes I wonder how many of the choices are caused by cultural differences in stotytelling and how much depends on the show runners individually. Apart from that, Thai music is similar to Chinese Opera, in that both, even when objectively good, can sound jarring and off key to the western ear. I speak some Chinese and I guess the music can sound strange because they are both tonal languages and the music also has a different scale than in the west.

Elina

Keep watching and forming your own opinion on the show..that's all I can say. I stand by this series being one of the best.

Keyette Johnson

The show is problematic and you need to watch it with a critical mind. Even the biggest fans of the show acknowledge this. It's good that you voice your concerns and opinions. Hopefully you'll enjoy the good parts of the show

Agree, I think they are struggling with some of the Asian storytelling conventions.

Where is the subtitles? I’m Deaf and this is the first time they’re not subtitled. Is this a mistake on my part? Can anyone tell me how to fix it?

Shelby Frost Bay

Oh no. I haven’t had a chance to watch their reaction. Am I going to be unhappy? Are they going to be judgy? I hope not. I hate watching people being judgy of my favorite shows. KP is not a feel good BL it’s dark complex and deliciously complicated. It’s not fluffy or have people who are likable at times. Heck half the times I borderline hate Vegas but I also understand that’s human nature and it’s a freaking mobster show. Please tell me I’m going to enjoy the reactor episode? They’ll be their usual funny selves?!?! I’m nervous and now scared to watch it lmao. I don’t want to be ruined by their reactions if it’s negative not that it’s bad if they disagree with opinions but…… hmmmm.

Shelby Frost Bay

I would like to point out that this episode also gives a good insight into the relationship between Kinn and his father. I believe if Kinn didn’t have that talk with his father by the pool he would most like have had that chat with Porsche that everyone was hoping for. But his father is extremely good at putting Kinn into place with a few choice words, he’s very manipulative. Also, I absolutely love your discussions, I am so glad I decided to pay for the uncut version here on Patreon.

Fio

Very good point.

I think after this you should definitely try out a more fluffy BL to see just how much range there can be in the genre, something like 'My school president' or 'I cannot reach you'. I've been really enjoying your KinnPorsche reactions so far, it's been interesting for me seeing reactions outside of the BL fandom, especially a show like this where many of the scenes give you a lot to think about. I'm really interested to see your reactions to the next 3 eps since they're my personal favourites.

Owlabi

I really love that about Thai (and Korean dramas too) - that mixing of unexpected genres. And with Japanese dramas, I like how dark and even unhealthy they can get. They explore interesting parts of humanity.

Cassy G

All good points. Btw, Hi ARMY. 👋 💜

Cassy G

Your confusion about Korn's motives for keeping Porsche, the worst bodyguard ever, is the same confusion that Kim feels, hence him poking around. Also, Kim is definitely lying to Porchay, but the age difference is not as wide as it seems by the way their characters behave. Chay is 18, preparing for his university entrance exams and Kim is like 20/21 (I think. He's still at uni anyway). But Kim's fully being a jerk to Chay and using him for information. Also, the nickname for Kim in the fandom is "Kimlock Holmes" for exactly the reasons you guys mentioned. And the purpose of the scene between Kim and Khun at the pond is to batter home the point that Kim is "nosy, nosy, nosy" and always has been. I'm finding it really interesting seeing this series blind reacted to by people who are not familiar with BL / Asian media and its tropes. Most of us have worked our way up to Kinnporsche. I enjoy seeing you guys work through your feelings on the characters and their actions, because some dark, dark shit happens, and it's understandable to question it. In fact, there are parts of this series that I've skipped because of that (the SA scene in the last ep as soon as I realized it was really going to happen, for example).

I think in order to understand why a lot of us love KinnPorsche so much you will need to watch all those BLs that came before KinnPorsche. All those fluffy cute university settings. For years. I think by the time KinnPorsche was announced, we were all starved for something different, something more mature, something with more morally grey characters. And boy, was KinnPorsche a change from what everyone was used to watch. The KinnPorsche trailer alone has 7.5 million views. People were freaking out about it on social media, the hype was enormous. The show had a huge impact on the BL industry, the BL shows since then have been so much more interesting and diverse.

Fio

You guys: disrespecting Kim and Porchay's singing scene Courtain: falls Me: Karma ^__^

Tsuki

In my opinion this was a terrible choice for a first BL. lol but I get that you didn’t know that. :) I highly recommend you check out Love in the Air for your next BL because there were some dark situations that are handled more appropriately.

Jessica Danowski

I agree, but sadly it's hard to find a thai bl that doesn't have any toxic or problematic things. I love love in the air but there's some scenes that are triggering and, hard to watch. TharnThype love the chemistry but really toxic stuff,Until we meet again great chemistry excellent acting really traumatic to watch. Only one I can think that's fluffy and not as dramatic is 2gether.

Kimberley

I agree with what you wrote. I love to watch the more darker stuff because it really makes me think things trough. I don't shy away from hard subjects. Life is 100000 shades of every colour there is. Kinnporsche isn't easy because sometimes it has comedy and sometimes it goes to really mature stuff and has a lot of subtext that you need to have eyes for. And when it switches between these two modes it does have that jarring effect. But I do enjoy that. Weird I know. (Also it's so very thai to mix all these genres together). I've seen this in thai horror movies too 😅

Maya

I think the guys might have missed a bit of dialogue during the chess game, when the dad warned Kinn not to let one piece cost them everything "like what happened before". And Kinn responding that he wouldn't let it happen again.

Ivy Yap

I get how you fell about all those F*ed up situations, and the eyerolls and here we go again moments, whenever someone yet again gets in kinda selfcaused trouble, or just dangerous situations, cause its like it kinda goes with the job/lifestyle, and you've come to expect it, but also it can really be too much and shouldn't happen. They at least started to adress the problems from last episode and not completely brushed it off, but I would have loved to see them have a full conversation about it, before they got kidnapped or without being that at all. Porshay shouldn't be dragged into this world, as for now it seems like Kim just use him for information, while trying to seem nice by giving him lessons, but we'll see where it goes.

Sara Nissen

I’m really pleased that you decided to stick with the show, despite any misgivings you might have , guys and I can understand why you might feel that way..but I think you are going to see that there are some complex layers in KinnPorsche and some interesting and surprising revelations to come. It’s not an easy watch and it’s not meant to be. You can find plenty of ‘fluffy’ BL shows in strong contrast to this one, if you so choose, there are some good ones out there, but however problematic or uncomfortable a show KinnPorsche might be, in my opinion, it’s an important one that kind of broke the mould of what BL shows could be and could show-and I don’t just mean the NC or intimate scenes.

Ruth May

Those are all excellent recommendations. Though even Cherry Magic (another fav of mine), the standard Japanese overacting would probably be a struggle. I didn't realise how unfamiliar they were with Asian media in general. Going straight into a full-on bl without any guidance about what to expect - about basic cultural norms, or culture-specific tropes, for example, must be quite jarring. The things they've reacted with surprise to have thrown me a bit. It's a pity they're not enjoying it more. I've already watched all the other reactors 😆

Cassy G

I definitely think there were easier and more palatable bls to watch for western audiences as their first foray into the bl genre :) I absolutely love this show, it's my favourite bl, but I can accept that it is an acquired taste and that you have to come into it with a certain mindset. Maybe something simpler like A Tale of Thousand Stars, something more lighthearted like Cherry Magic or something more realistic like Moonlight Chicken would've been easier. This is basically getting thrown into the deep end without any floaties. I am curious to see how they feel about everything at the end and I hope it doesn't dissuade them from watching more bls.

Hayun

What's a better way to bond than kidnapping, agree LOL Pete needs his courage about him LOL

Onesan Talks

About the music choices: You have to remember that Porche is the Main character here, the story is from his POV. So any scene where he is involved, the music is set to reflect HIS feelings. The bike ride is a reprieve from all the all-consuming mental and emotional conflict caused by his night with Kinn. About power dynamics, in Thai BL specifically: Culturally, in Thailand (and many Asian cultures) there is a emphasis in seniority. Either by age, job title, or social standing. It is culturally inappropriate/rude to call someone who is older than you by their name without a modifier that shows respect. In Thai, the words "Phi" (sometimes abbreviated as P') and/or "Khun" are those modifiers and are ALWAYS said before their name. Consequently, because most of the BL shows are based in the BL cultures of Asia, this power dynamic is inherent.

I just finished watching. I'm going to hang in there until next weeks ep is finished, but I've realised I was a bit misguided in my earlier views; I don't know if you will come to like this show after all. There's a lot of production differences that are actually often culturally influenced that you seem to be struggling with, but its also seemingly generational. You seem to need these relationships to be healthy, smart or moral. These are criminals. They torture and murder people for a living. They're not good people. I feel like many in younger generations need to like the characters in their drama in order to enjoy it. They feel uncomfortable and conflicted in a way that distracts them from enjoyment when things are "problematic". This isnt bad. It's just obviously a new way of consuming media thats no doubt a reaction to the completely irresponsible way some visual media in particular has operated through history. Its certainly even more understandable when considering a gay audience's sensitivity to how poor representation had been historically. However, as someone who grew up watching all that terrible representation, I just find it a relief to enjoy media where the gay characters aren't evil or perfect; They're just characters and they could be anything, including a criminal, a masochist, mentally ill or damaged - they just happen to be gay.

Cassy G

Aaand I should've listened literally only a couple seconds longer before writing all that.

Hayun

I believe most of the dissonance with the music is because it's not from the viewer's point of view (who realises what's actually going on and how horrible it is) but from the character's point of view. We didn't get that music because Vegas and Porsche riding a bike was supposed to be romantic to us. We got that music because Porsche was at peace for the first time since the assault on that bike. That's my interpretation at least.

Hayun

I love your Kinnporsche reactions I look forward to them all week. I know there are problematic things in this show but I hope you continue to react to BL's in the future. Don't forget after ep 6 to watch the side story on YouTube.

Kimberley

I will forever hate Korn for pretending to be understanding and kind to Porsche after he basically ordered Kinn to have him punished. Father of the year, seriously.

Hayun

I’m coming! Been waiting for this. Thank you🥰

米分刀巴

Will never be over how good the bathroom scene/Porsche’s flashbacks were, just so well filmed. Also Kinn and Porsche really do have a lot of bathroom time don’t they……

Teddy

I have to mention it again: Josh, your voice is incredibly sexy 🫠 I’d listen to that audiobook!!! Or can we maybe hope for another ASWT podcast episode in the future…? Cascada is still performing here and there. I believe that they are permanent guests at a German tv music show for a couple of years now. So…And now I’m gonna watch your reaction. Looking forward to it 😊

Frances

I have never been so early omg! I coincidentally checked patreon and here you are with a new upload!
