FELLOW TRAVELERS E4 - UNCUT

Oh boy! It's Polygraph time!

This show is becoming so hard to watch, and yet so brilliant for representation

this was a tough one

FELLOW TRAVELERS E4 - UNCUT

Comments

OMG PA-LEASE make a montage of all of Josh's clothing, vehicle, and architectural call outs against all of Alex's reactions to the same scenes, it would be hilarious!! We're all here for it.

Michele Berman

Having lived through the 80s as a bisexual and having many gay friends it was still frowned upon to show any affection in public even just holding hands or kissing was really frowned on . There was still alot of prejudice even in the 80s & 90s I suffered alot when I came out in the late 80s.

Jeannette Peacock

Yes I caught that. Hawk treats Tim like sh*t and Tim let's him do it! While this show is well written and acted, it fails as a love story.

Steven Jump

Have watched these reactions many times over and it kinda intrigues me that no one has really picked up - or at least commented - on the fact that Hawk didn’t actually get Tim the cufflinks. He simply took them off a shelf in his closet, looked at them for a moment, then went to his safe to get the McCarthy “evidence”. Maybe that’s sweet because its something of his he knows Tim will cherish? Maybe its to help w the sting of the “favor” he immediately asks for? Who knows?🤷🏻‍♀️

KL M

I'm rewatching this for I think there third time, I'm now convinced that Hawkins cufflinks were a gift of convenience, and were the only things he had at the time he was willing to part with.

At the start of the video, you were talking about sound recording levels. Maybe check the software you are using to record the audio and see if it has a compressor/limiter setting. Or if you can download and add it as an add on the software. Then in addition to setting your normal audio recording level, you can set also set an audio threshold level in the limiter settings that is a maximum you want. Then play and test the settings so that instead of the sound peaking with loud shrills of excitement, it will limit the sound to the threshold that you set. This could be an easy way to control the maximum sound level to avoid it peaking. NB You will need to do this when recording the audio rather than in post production when editing the video. Hope that helps.

My family were not allowed to find work again during McCarthy

Gina Lipkin

My dad's family faced oppression from McCarthy as they were russian Jewish refugees in New York, they had a cafe which McCarthy took away from them, because they were left wing, my dad was a child experiencing these events and his family being questioned in the way that's portrayed here

Gina Lipkin

This was their reality there was no freedom under McCarthy, pure oppression, I'm glad there is a real representation of living gay in those times, as an education, as harsh as it is to find out about it. Have a look at "Transatlantic" it's on Netflix, also covering reality through acting, anyway thank you

Gina Lipkin

Exactly - after seeing that 60 minutes interview - I recognized Trump is doing Cohn cosplay. Both despicable dudes. Drives me crazy Cohn haunts us from the fucking grave.

Jennifer Thompson

Annoyed with myself for binge watching all episodes so now I have to wait a while for review episodes hahah (understandably by the way, don’t come at me .. I know ASWT work hard)

Reem

I knew of the Lavender Scare and McCarthy's hearings and how horrible that time was for everyone because my parents lived through it. They had relatives who were questioned by McCarthy's committee. It is a very awful time in U.S. history (honestly, there aren't that many NON-awful times) and there are still remnants of what happened at that time. The "In God We Trust" on our money started at that time, the "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance was started at that time. And due to HIV/AIDS, in 1985 gay/bisexual men and women who had sex with gay/bisexual men were banned from donating blood. That restriction was just overturned in May 2023 by the FDA. There are still 12 states with laws that ban consensual sodomy on their books but they are unenforceable due to a SCOTUS decision in 2003. I'm sure you can guess where those states are located. As a non-LGBTQ woman, I feel awful that people had to (and still) go through that, that other LGBTQ people (who probably didn't even know the closet HAD a door or would have walked through it if they did) treated LGBTQ people like that. I feel awful the government sanctioned those hearings, but again, the federal government has never been on the side of the common people, no matter what Lincoln said. The federal government has always been of the rich white people, for the rich white people, and by the rich white people.

im actually so damn excited for yall to react to episode 5&6

Meral Gattan

When I was watching this episode, all I kept thinking about was how I would not pass a lie detector test, then or now. I would fold faster than a chair because of my anxiety. To be quite honest, I'm still not sure how no one knew I liked girls before I came out because I cannot lie if my life depended on it. My heart would beat once and that would be it, I'd be in jail.

Jamie

Agree… most of the McCarthyism that was taught in school (1 maybe 2 chapters) was more about rooting out Communism. Nothing about the gay/lesbian community. Never heard of the Lavender Scare until decades later. I too was in high school in the late 80s and no one was “out”… you may have had an idea of one or two people but nothing said… even in college…. Everyone was still in the closet. Guys and girls I knew only came out after college (in the mid 90s) when it wasn’t AS taboo. And the AIDS crisis and scare was technically over. Seems so long ago but not really. I am enjoying watching this series. I understand a lot (and knew that the man was going to kill himself (although to be honest I thought with a gun and not car) but there is so much more to learn especially the nuances.

Shari

Another great reaction from Josh and Alex and yes I've also noticed how Josh often seems to pick up on extraneous things 😀. I would like to make one observation though. (not a criticism) about the reaction to one scene . and that is that some exasperation was expressed at Hawk having a fear of being exposed if he helps Tim with his cause, because "come on" it is 1986. I've said this on other reaction sites. The 1980's, at least in Manchester UK where I used to live, was not a golden age of freedom for most gay people. Right up to the end of the 1980's gay bars, clubs and even private parties were regularly raided by the police . They could not arrest you for being homosexual but they would for your behaviour, which would have been deemed either obscene or offensive, and that behaviour could be something as innocent as holding hands/kissing in public. And then, just for good measure, the police would then go and inform the families of these people. So I'm not surprised that Hawk was reticent about helping Tim even in 1986. At the same time I take my hat off to those very brave people, the Tims of this world, who decided to live their life as open and as authentically as they could during the 1980's but it was not a good time for gay people, and it was not until the 21st century, in the UK anyway, that most of the laws were passed, granting rights to LGBQT people (Trans people are still fighting) giving them equality rights and protection from persecution. Sorry, rant over, this series is too triggering. lol. On a lighter note; was that lip balm that I spotted on Hawk's lips?😉

Pip

Watch the 60 minutes interview and you’ll see the formula in action. 🤢🤬

Jennifer Thompson

Sheesh learning that Cohn was a mentor to Trump raises a red flag in my book

Diane Furlong

Fellow Travelers is right up there with the best shows I've seen. It's so raw and powerful. I'm right there with you, trying to find lightness in anything in this show to keep the dark away for just a minute. This is as close as we've come to Hawk admitting he loves Tim. We all know he does, but has never verbalized it. Of course the "snowballing" scene generated a real gay gasp from me as well. Lol

Chris Metzger

Have the cookies handy for episode 5 because it’s a doozy. I have learned so much history from this show. Check out Roy Cohn’s full interview on 60 minutes- it’s mind blowing. (Cohn was a mentor to Mr Trump - ugh he’s so gross).

Jennifer Thompson

As you said this show is so difficult to watch, but so so important! How did we go so long not knowing anything about this period (the 50s)? If you Google Roy Cohn you realize just how much of this show is absolute fact and how far-reaching his influence was/is to US politics to this day. Thank you for reacting to this show, absolutely love everything you do 💜

Andrea Kammerer

I've been watching along with you mainly because I'm finding it too heartbreaking to watch on my own. great reaction Josh and Alex

indigo

This show is heart wrenching, but so important! I hate how the history taught in schools has whitewashed so much that none of it was taught or discussed. I am not lgbt myself, but have many friends who are, and I see them now and remember our high school days (late 70’s early 80’s) when they were hiding their sexuality. It had to have been terrible.

L Archibald

🤭

Diane Furlong

They’ve mentioned that it will be covered. There’s a lot of content right now which is a good thing but it’s certainly keeping them busy

Diane Furlong

Had to leave another comment for the penguin joke 🤣🤣🤣🤣 lmao

Frances

It’s so funny bcs ms. Addison (the nosy one in hawks office and the one who told on him) is one of my fav queer figures in real life I used to have a crush on her in this show when she played a straight role in I was younger before I realized I was queer too it all came full circle 😭

Dd44 🩷💜💙

"It's gonna be a white christmas" LOL!!!

IAmom

Oh Josh your face (and smutty comments) at the, let's call it scene with the tie... literally crying laughing. Great reaction as always. It genuinely beggars belief that people had to go through this BS. Reckon this series is going to break our hearts before much longer though.

Jacqueline Hahn

The showrunner did an interview and mentioned that Hawk wears plaid in the 80’s to feel closer to Tim.

Jenny Lukan

Are you guys not gonna do Looking S2? Just checking

Henry Riley

Thanks! GReat start to the week. We're having a spot of cold weather at the moment (- 17 C this morning) so it'll be nice to have something to heat me up! (And probably a good cry)

Stian Kristoffersen

Been waiting for the Fellow Travelers update 💔 This show is hard to watch but oh so important

Reem

I was also very happy to see Marcus and Frankie being together still! Honestly, I did get paramount+ cause it turns out I’m the most impatient person when it comes to fellow travelers 😅 I’ve watched episode 6 last night… I just don’t know how this show can get more and more heart wrenching from episode to episode…

Frances

I'm sooo happy for another episode, it's 11:10pm here Di!! We are enjoying you boys at any time of the day 🤣🤣🥰

Nikki Hearn

Good morning! Great way to start the day (it’s 7AM here). Thanks Alex and Josh! Oh my! Josh is being a bit naughty right off the bat.

Diane Furlong

Happy Dance!!! I have been looking forward to your reaction to this episode. And two releases on the same day/night. I'm going to be tired at work tomorrow. Thanks guys!!! 🤗🤗

Chris Mackenzie

Well, Monday just got better 🤩
