HALLOWEEN SPECIAL: INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE EP1 - UNCUT

Comments

I'm popping over from the KinnPorsche reaction videos and saw you reacted to IWTV! I hit the jackpot! Love you guys ❤️❤️❤️

Sera Taíno

Yep, the fever broke and I’m finally starting to feel better, thanks 😊

Suze

I think I do understand where you're coming from (Hope the fever is breaking!). I agree that Alex & Josh do work very hard on these videos (and it's probably a real pain to have to edit/condense/blur out things for the YouTube version as well... lots of extra work!) FWIW, coming from an industry where I receive LOTS of critique, opinions and feedback about my work, from people both ill- and well-informed, my comment would barely budge the needle on the "rude & condescending"-meter. Josh & Alex are of an age and a different nationality where they would very likely NOT be familiar with the background of Anne Rice's work. But even allowing for their videos as reactions rather than reviews, and that they're watching for Queer representation, rather than fidelity of the adaptation, it seemed like they were just flummoxed by the actual milieux of the story in a way that sort of undercut their reactions, IMO. I never said they should be familiar with the whole of Anne Rice's oeuvre... but going into IWtV and expecting it to be a "fantasy" in the vein of OFMD seems just silly... and again, 5 minutes of Wikipedia research about the story would have cleared up a lot of those preconceptions! As I said, there was not "condescension" or "talking down to" intended. Only an earnest wish that, when reacting to an adaptation of a major literary property, they would know a little background going in. Hence the comparison to watching "Romeo & Juliet"... Just as it would be jarring and nonsensical to comment and react to that with absolutely no knowledge of its setting and characters, it's also jarring to see them reacting to "Interview" with little to no evident knowledge of vampire lore and stories, expecting it to be "fantasy" like the pirates of Our Flag. (And if the general public is expected to know about R&J from school ... whether they know much else about Shakespeare or not... might they not also be expected to know some of the basic facts and lore from, say, Bram Stoker's "Dracula"?) As I said, just a suggestion based on my opinion. Other viewers of ASWT videos may differ.

Grant Youngblood

I do have to agree with Sam above that your comment reads as really rude and condescending, which is the main reason I responded to it tbh. I think that because the boys are reacting to queer representation and this was something that a lot of people requested rather than being something they were desperate to see, the fact that they didn’t know much about it isn’t surprising. Sometimes I think going in completely naive to something can be really refreshing for the audience too, and if I’m completely honest sometimes I do just enjoy talking to the screen and asking them what the hell they’re going on about 😂 It’s one of those things where you have your style, they have theirs, and sometimes they’ll meet more closely than others. Some of the other commenters gave them little snippets of background and answered the questions they had in the video and I think that’s probably a nicer way to hear more about it than by someone leaving the kind of comment you’ve made. Does that make sense? Josh and Alex are real people who are working hard and sometimes don’t meet everybody’s standards but reading negative comments must feel pretty shitty. Re: Romeo and Juliet. We both know there’s not even the slightest comparison there. We’re all taught about Shakespeare from primary school and there are Shakespearean references absolutely everywhere. IWTV is fairly well known but I think when you really love something you kind of build it up to be something that ‘surely everyone knows that’ - I definitely do 😂 And then that’s where the likelihood of someone feeling talked down to can come from. And even if they were reacting to R&J I wouldn’t expect them to know about Shakespeare’s entire body of work. I could probably tell you what happens in six or seven of his plays but it doesn’t stop me from enjoying the ones I do see. And now my fever is making me ramble, I just wanted to continue the dialogue and try to see if you understood where I was coming from.

Suze

To Suze: You're right: society is very different now than when the original novels were written. Personally, I loved the AMC series take on "Interview", and how much passion and resources they obviously put into it... Gorgeous, lavish production, excellent writing, spectacular performances from Anderson, Reid and Bogosian, and the really well-thought-out reworking of the time period and settings. My only quibble with Alex & Josh's reaction video to the first episode (which, yes, is a different thing than a review video) was that it seems like they had no idea what they were watching... including basic, foundational information such as "How is a vampire made?". I'm looking forward to their reactions to the rest of the series.

Grant Youngblood

Having said that, I agree that seeing Josh & Alex's genuine reactions is a joy. I just made a HELPFUL suggestion that, for works like this that are based on famous literary properties, having a little background info going in would be great. I haven't watched their whole series on "Interview", so perhaps things will pick up with further episodes. I do worry if the boys were a bit traumatized by the scene in the church when Lestat put his fist through the back of the priest's head... I remember that was a shocking moment of violence when we saw the show the first time.

Grant Youngblood

I would disagree with your description of my comment as "rude" or "patronizing". I was attempting to convey that, when you're reacting to a new version of a basic, famous literary property, you'd probably do well to learn about the book first... I DIDN'T say they should have read the whole novel and then spent their reaction video comparing and contrasting the book and the AMC series. You're right; that would be pointless. But just as it would be weird for Josh & Alex to be watching a new movie version of "Romeo & Juliet" and stare at the screen perplexedly asking each other, "Why are these men all wearing tights?"; "I guess there's some problem between Romeo's family and Juliet's family...? I'm not sure..."; "What's this Mercutio guy doing there? Is he in love with Romeo?", it also seems kind of weird to be reacting to a story about vampires and seem to have no apparent clue about how a vampire is even created, for example. I suspect that five minutes of reading the Wikipedia article about Anne Rice's novel would tell you that it's not at all the kind of silly frothy fantasy that they saw in "Our Flag Means Death". And knowing basic background details like, the original novel begins on a Louisiana indigo plantation in 1791... might lead to reactions like, "Hey, look... this show is starting out in New Orleans' red light district in 1910! That'll be a cool twist!"

Grant Youngblood

Just a thought 😏

Suze

This comment comes across as pretty rude and, dare I say it, patronising. The way you have approached your critique of the reaction video isn’t helpful, or constructive. If Alex and Josh had to read every book before watching an adaptation, there’d not be nearly as much content put out (and then we’d have people moaning about that too), as this channel isn’t Josh’s day job and Alex is kept very busy with editing, etc. Also, it would change the dynamic of the reaction from genuine “reactions”, to a comparison of the book vs movie/video being reacted to. I’m sure there are other content creators who do that, and a search on YouTube might help you find one of those channels if that’s what you prefer. I LOVE these honest, blind reactions, as they generate some of the funniest, sweetest moments that we wouldn’t get otherwise.

Sam S

Why would a reactor research the things they’re going to react to? It wouldn’t be much of a reaction, would it? It’d be like me making videos of myself watching films of books I’ve read and saying ‘well, it’s not like that in the book.’ No one wants to watch that! We watch reaction channels to see honest, as-they-happen reactions. I don’t even like channels that ‘react’ to something that they’ve clearly already watched just so they can sound like they know what they’re talking about. Would it really have been as fun to watch their reaction at the end of episode 6 and the finale if they’d already read what was going to happen? It isn’t the point of the channel, and it also wouldn’t particularly make sense for this series as it’s focusing on different themes and placing more emphasis on some than others. It’s a totally different climate now than when the books were written and that’s being reflected in the series really well.

Suze

Guys… GUYS!!! Sorry to burst your bubble, but “Interview with the Vampire” isn’t a “fantasy series” like “Our Flag Means Death”, and it’s NOTHING like the awful “Twilight” films. It’s based on the first of a HUGELY famous and influential series of novels by Anne Rice, addressing a bunch of issues about sexuality, love, being human, being a monster, obsession, toxic relationships, the fulfillment and the failures of eternal life, and much more. It’s a foundational part of American horror fiction. If I may make a humble suggestion: perhaps when you want to react to a movie/series that’s based on an actual novel you could read up on it a bit first? Get a basic idea of the world the author envisioned, and how it might be translated to the medium of TV? A little Wikipedia research first, to learn things like: what is this show about? What world does this writer place their characters in? How have previous adaptations of the material fared in telling the story? How does a vampire turn a human into one of the undead? Basic shit like that… Just a thought.

Grant Youngblood

YAS! I Just joined for this show alone, Well you lovelies too of course! Can't wait for more!

Chris E⁷

I love this show so much. I’m literally obsessed. I watch it constantly and I recently bought the DVDs. It’s so good. I hope you’ll keep reacting to it because each episode gets better and better. And there’s going to be a season 2 as well!

Jamie

What an amazingly fun video!. I’m like Josh and have to watch the violent/ gore stuff through my fingers! I have seen this whole series and really enjoyed it. I forgot how much happened in this first episode! And a shout out to A Story Worth Telling!🙌🏻😍

JustinThyme

I’d recommend reading the original novels by Anne Rice: Interview with the Vampire and The Vampire Lestat. She’s well known for having worked a lot of queer themes and representation into her writing and a lot of the queer themes in modern depictions of vampires come from her work. The 1990s movie really stripped that out in a way that I remember reading Rice wasn’t thrilled about.

Pmc4gy

I'm glad you're doing this series! I somehow missed the notification for this until today but that worked out since it meant I got to watch it on Halloween itself. I hope you'll continue the rest of the series. I love it so much.

Kaci

Love this show!! Can’t wait to see you guys watch it. ❤️❤️

Michael Nienaber

YAAASSSS!!! I’ve been waiting for this show reaction. I had to subscribe to watch you both go through this dark, sexy, gothic excellent show!!!

skmj

Wow ... well I jumped in unison with you both at the head punch part 😂

Ali Laura

ahahahha, laughing the first minutes straight about your fangs

Naava

Wow, I don’t know what to say about this. Didn’t want to watch but couldn’t stop. Josh and Alex’s facial reactions were the best

Clash

if you want more fantasy like shows to watch you can check out Shadowhunters for some representation

Edward

Alex & Josh, you guys talked about this being one of the few "fantasy" projects you've reacted to. I think you'd like Nimona. It's an animated fantasy tale and has queer representation and some very interesting allegories for queerness as well. I loved Interview with the Vampire. Glad to see you guys dipping your toes into it.

DC

Now that's a plan 😁

Luna

I agree with that. There is a lot of queer and homoerotic imagery in the books.

Jamie Schmidt

Oh my days! WHY haven't I seen this before?! I loved the film, and got heavily into the books. This feels much truer to the books than the film did. Your reactions are fabulous. Hope you keep watching. X

Jacqueline Hahn

I am so excited for you to watch this show. One of my absolute faves! So camp, so gay and so gory!

Beach gurl Bi

I'm so glad you're reacting to this!

Soraya

Yeah didn’t mean to infer that was her intent, and thanks for the dates correction. The symbolism simply worked very well purely by zeitgeist.

Joseph Carriker

Now you’re being an instigator but you’re not wrong

Diane Furlong

I rejoined patreon for this show!!!!!!! <3

Es

Please tell me you are doing the rest of the first season. I LOVED the books but hated the film. It looks like the series will be much better. I LOVED the Mayfair witches books but have not really enjoyed the series. Only made it thru the 1st three episodes.

Bananies

OMG SLAY!

Henry Riley

It’s likely to only be about 5 mins long, with the amount of stuff that will have to be cut! 🤣

Sam S

I can't wait to see what makes it in hahaha

Suze

Petition for Mincks to wear more makeup starts here

Suze

I thought this a few times as I was watching it. Definitely needs more pausing to be able to understand fully.

Suze

There is a lot more gore than I had expected but the queerness outweighs it for me. If you really don't like gore then it might be worth giving it a miss. You can definitely just cover the screen and watch Josh & Alex through the worst bits though.

Suze

Completely agree. I still can't stop thinking about this series even though I finished it a few days ago.

Suze

"What are they called?" "Birds?!"

Suze

Please, please review the rest of the series. It is so good. I laughed with you and jumped when you were jump scared...even though I have seen the series. I do plan to watch it again. Also, please remember to pause as you miss a lot of the convo. Sorry. Okay, some background Anne Rice and her son Christopher (an excellent author as well), created the series and when Anne passed away Christopher continued on. He has producer credits for the series and yes there will be a second season. Buckle up.

D.A. Rowley

Paul's brother also did not want his sister to get married. It is not lost on me he killed himself at the next day's dawn after she got married.

Mark Walker

Glad you two are reacting to AMC's version. I agree: Pause so you don't miss key dialogue and let go of your notions of what vampires can and cannot do (enter houses without an invitation, wooden stakes, crucifixes, garlic, turning into a bat, moving so fast it amounts to freezing time, flying, reading minds, communicating telepathically, and so on.), as these vampires are not tied to silly rules or limits made by other authors working with vampire lore. These vampires are written with AMC understanding ALL of Anne Rice's vampire chronicles and adapting their Immortal Universe vampires to fit with all of it along with the Mayfair Witches, which got even a mention at the early in this first episode: Louis's family mentions the Mayfair witches when talking about jumping a broom during the wedding.

Mark Walker

The book was written in 73 and published in 76, before the AIDS crisis began. Anne Rice wrote it to explore death after losing her 6 year old daughter.

Jamie Schmidt

I don't do gore but putting my hand over the picture-in-picture and watching your reactions was still more than enough haha. I mean. I'm glad I didn't try to watch this just on its own because I was certainly tempted. I wouldn't have expected the horror level based on the original movie, although I have to admit I haven't read the book (Anne Rice fans please do not come for me!) I love Josh calling out red flags and hoping for a healthy relationship dynamic between vamps haha 😂🧛‍♂️

Jacqui Chesterton

I don't do well with horror/gore so I skipped watching this. Maybe it will be okay if I watch along w/ you guys ... Maybe 🥹😭

Luna

Love love love the eyeshadow Alex! 👍🔥👍

Dorothy Johnstone

Loved this show. I can’t wait for season 2, and I hope they do the rest of the vampire chronicles! They get much more interesting. Hope y’all watch them all!

Michael Cox

Josh was really on one in this video, and I’m LOVING it! God speed, Alex, for the YouTube edit! 🤣🤭

Sam S

AH!!! This was the one I was waiting for!! I'm so excited you're finally watching it!! Can't wait to rewatch it with you guys. Also I swear I don’t mean this in a pressuring way, but as you guys said, since this show is “high drama”, the dialogue is very important for understanding the show. Because of this, it might be a good idea to be trigger happy with the pausing, as well as rewinding a few seconds when you do before pressing play. If you talk over things, or pause in the middle of things, you might miss important dialogue that will make the show harder to understand. Just something to keep in mind as you go further into the show!

Abby

🔥❤️

Steffi K.

Ahhh!! Yessss!&

Cody Strimple

I'm so excited!!! The original book was written in the 70s and the 90s movie is very close to the book. I remember reading the book and thinking that they were lovers, but it's VERY subtle. But I think it speaks to the time she wrote the first book, similar to how Louis is telling the story of a time he could not be an openly gay man in present day when he can be. This show takes quite a few creative liberties from the source material BUT I love how their romance (for better or worse) is in front and I think it really helps drive the plot of what is to come in a way that makes more sense than it did when their romance was unspoken. AMC+/Shudder has a docuseries called Queer for Fear, I highly suggest it, not for your channel but just because it is so interesting and the first episode talks about vampires. Also, two other men, including Tom Cruise, played Lestat. But Anne Rice created Sam Reid in a laboratory to be her Lestat, he is perfection!

Sam

This story is a perfect example of the notion that when overculture turned queer people into villains and monsters, instead of deploring our queerness we came to embrace the monsters. The vampire with his appetites, secrecy, moving in dark places away from polite society, “recruitment,” and even the fact that vampirism is blood-bourne (Interview was written at the height of the AIDS epidemic) make for a very potent metaphor for queerness.

Joseph Carriker

The Immortal Universe is Interview with the Vampire and The Mayfair Witches tv shows. Anne Rice's books cross over with each other thru various characters. Lestat had nothing to do with Louis' brother killing himself. Paul was just mentally ill. I hope you continue with the rest of the series. I think you'd have to get very creative with your editing in order to put this on YouTube. Or just have it be exclusive to Patreon. Also, Josh had his teeth in upside down!

Steven Jump

Such a phenomenal show, I don't normally do horror but I loved every second of this show. Also the rules of becoming a vampire as stated by Buffy "they suck your blood, you suck their blood, it's a whole blood sucking thing"

Dannielle

Mr Minx does look amazing in this one... Red is his color possibly 😉

Michaela Morávková

Alex, your eyes are always beautiful but they’re stunning with the eyeshadow. Well done!

Diane Furlong

Minx looks great with the eyeshadow

Lonely_viking

Oh, I'm excited and apprehensive! 😲 Am not a fan of horror normally, so hopefully it'll be ok in your company 🤞

Stian Kristoffersen

OMG I loved this when it first came out, and I have only just now realised Louis (Jacob Anderson) was Grey Worm😱

Chris Mackenzie

yes!!!!! love it

Aurora

Yes yes yessss. I'm so flipping excited to watch this with you two!

Jennifer Fell

Oh my! I don’t do scary very well but I’ve just started watching this. Let’s see what you Fellas have to say about it. Yeah there’s blood guys! That was my first thought when I saw your post because you get a bit squeamish.

Diane Furlong
