I feel like he wasn't just talking about acting in the sense of what he does as a career, but as a metaphor for life. (If you think about it, we are all actors in a sense, we all go out into the world wearing these masks, playing different roles depending on what kind of scenarios we find ourselves in).

I think it was Shakespeare who said “All the world is a stage, and we are all actors in it .” Or something similar to that. Alan Rickman was a theater actor first. He was a Shakespearean actor for many years.
