CONTESSA DOESN’T UNDERSTAND THE FORTUNE COOKIE

The restaurant was quiet, save for the clinking of chopsticks and the soft murmur of conversation. The air carried the rich scent of soy sauce, sizzling meat, and freshly steamed rice.

Contessa sat across from Maggie, watching as the server approached with a small black tray. Two fortune cookies rested on it, golden and delicate. The server set them down with a polite nod before retreating.

Maggie wasted no time, cracking hers open with practiced ease. She fished out the tiny slip of paper, grinning as she read aloud. “‘Good fortune will find you soon.’ Hey, I’ll take it.”

Contessa picked up the remaining cookie. She turned it over in her fingers, inspecting its thin, crisp shell. “The message inside is predetermined.”

Maggie shrugged. “Yeah, but that’s part of the fun.”

Contessa snapped the cookie in half. A small strip of paper fluttered onto the table. She unfolded it.

You will soon take an unexpected journey.

She frowned. That was incorrect. Her movements were never unexpected. She dictated the course of events, not the other way around.

She held up the slip. “This is false.”

Maggie chuckled. “It’s not about the truth. It’s just a little thing people do. Besides, sometimes they’re weirdly accurate.”

Contessa considered this. The words carried no logical weight. No predictive power. And yet, people read them with amusement. With curiosity.

She looked at her fortune again. Slowly, she folded the paper and slipped it into her pocket.

“…Acceptable.”

Maggie smirked. “See? You’re getting it.”

Contessa did not reply. She simply took a bite of the broken cookie.
