CONTESSA DOESN’T UNDERSTAND MOVIE NIGHTS

The living room lights were dimmed, a bowl of popcorn sat between them, and the television screen flickered with the opening credits of the film. Maggie leaned back, sinking into the cushions with a contented sigh. Comfortable.

“This one’s a classic,” she said, tossing a piece of popcorn into her mouth. “You’re gonna love it.”

Contessa sat with her usual perfect posture, eyes fixed on the screen. “What is the premise?”

Maggie waved a hand dismissively. “Action, adventure, a little bit of romance. Just sit back and enjoy.”

Contessa did not sit back. She remained upright, her attention unwavering as the movie began.

Within minutes, she spoke. “That was an inefficient way to eliminate the threat.”

Maggie groaned. “Hon, it’s a movie.”

Contessa continued watching. A high-octane chase scene unfolded—explosions, impossible stunts, the protagonist narrowly escaping danger at every turn. “This sequence defies physics,” she observed.

Maggie chuckled. “That’s part of the fun.”

Contessa was silent for a moment. Then, “The antagonist’s plan is needlessly convoluted.”

Maggie sighed, rubbing her temples. “You’re not supposed to overanalyze everything.”

Contessa considered this. “Then what is the intended approach?”

Maggie thought for a second, then grinned. “You root for the hero, you get caught up in the story, and you let yourself have fun.”

Contessa glanced back at the screen. The protagonist delivered a triumphant one-liner, the music swelling dramatically. The moment was clearly meant to be exciting.

She did not feel excitement.

But she felt Maggie shift closer, their shoulders brushing lightly.

A few minutes later, Maggie rested her head against Contessa’s arm. Not pressing, not asking—just… there. Warm. Familiar.

Contessa did not fully understand the appeal of the movie.

But she understood this.
