Paranoid is overrated compared to the rest of Black Sabbaths first 5 records, even the highly under appreciated debut which it overshadows. The debut, Master of Reality, Vol. 4, and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath are all superior to Paranoid.

2025-03-23 04:17:10 +0000 UTCNot take on the Internet, but a hot take with talking to people IRL I notice a lot of people give me weird. Looks when I see that tpab is one of the greatest hip-hop records of all time and beats out a lot of of the classics mainly because I think too close minded for newer stuff like I’ve had so many family members so I cut off just cause they claim Kendrick was a mumble rapper cause I did not got time to hear any of that.

2025-03-15 17:27:10 +0000 UTCThe skeleton key to appreciating Piper at The Gates Of Dawn is to separate it from the rest of Pink Floyd's discography, then go in through the back way by sitting with The Madcap Laughs until it clicks; as a longtime Floyd fan this is how I learned to love it. Piper is not a Pink Floyd album any more than Lulu is a Metallica album. It's idiosyncratic and weird. But Syd was weird and it was all his idea. The Floyd boys were basically along for the ride.

2025-03-15 17:10:12 +0000 UTCIdk if this is a hot take or what but I've already listened to Kendrick Lamar's GNX way more than the rest of his discography combined. It's so frikkin catchy! It's not that I think it's better or more impt than TPAB or GOOD.KID or even DAMN necessary, but on GNX, Kendrick isn't demanding you eat your vegetables. I also don't understand why so rap fans dismiss it for being lightweight fun. It's HIGH-QUALITY lightweight fun. The best analogy I can think of is David Bowie's Pin-Ups, which is also high-quality lightweight fun that critics hated but sold a lot of records. Idk, not every project from a great artist has to swing for the bleachers. A bunt or sacrifice fly can be pretty exciting too. It shows range and versatility.

2025-03-15 16:38:55 +0000 UTCThis is a wild take. Countering that I'd say Eddie Vedder's work on Mike Watt's Ball Hog Or Tug Boat is better than Pearl Jam's entire discography. Plus that album has Kathleen Hannah going off on Watt's answering machine about all the scumbag rock dudes Watt worships, and Frank Black sings Chinese Firedrill, also doing better work there than all post-Pixies work he did including the revival(s).

2025-03-15 16:35:03 +0000 UTCI don't feel like working yet, so here's mine: 1. “Secret Piece” from Visions of Bodies Being Burned (the one where it’s field recordings from the woods from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. in summer, per Yoko Ono’s instructions) 2. “outro” from midcity (“Get money, get money, get money…”) 3. “Williams Mix” from CLPPNG (The John Cage thing where you play eight tapes on top of each other) 4. “Piano Burning” from There Existed an Addiction to Blood (the one where the piano’s burning) 5. “A Better Place” from Splendor & Misery (the one that’s the most like an actual song, and thus, to me, not in the spirit of a clipping. album closer even though it’s great) Have not had the pleasure of listening to the new album yet, so don't know if/where it ranks

2025-03-14 22:54:07 +0000 UTCIt makes me sad that New Age musical aesthetics are mostly seen as bad and corny because it's mostly associated with music they play at spas or music for hippies that burn sage and shop at Whole Foods. The glossy and easy listening sounds associate with New Age can be amazing when applied in interesting ways (see Love Deluxe by Sade) but outside of individual cases and older Vaporwave it's mostly just relegated to meditation CDs or really lame stuff that no one listens to.

2025-03-13 20:07:04 +0000 UTCNot my take, but saw a guy on Reddit who said he couldn't enjoy the new Lil Nas X single because "It's hard to vibe to gangsta music from a dude who sucks cocks and takes it in up the ass. Nothing inherently wrong with that, but can't relate to the music." It reminded me of some of the takes I see on this show lol. It's not as if Lil Nas X makes particularly "gangsta" music (whatever that means), and even if he did I don't need to be gay to enjoy it (and I'm not). Just seems like a lot of people insecure with their own sexuality.

2025-03-13 12:52:12 +0000 UTCWith the release of her acclaimed, very successful new album, Lady Gaga is clearly the greatest, most accomplished female pop artist of all time. Watching Gaga remain dominant commercially and still have REALLY strong material to contribute artistically even in 2025 is inspiring and frankly, impressive. Meanwhile someone from the same era (rhymes with Graty Ferry) has been failing to do that FOR AN ENTIRE DECADE. Even Madonna couldn't do it at this level for THIS long - she was also a less TALENTED performer than Gaga is, even at her peak.

2025-03-12 17:48:04 +0000 UTCit’s kinda gross how artists like Ice Cube, Chuck D, Zack de la Rocha, 2Pac, Beastie Boys, Q-Tip, etc. are often dismissed as writers or lyricists just because they didn’t emphasize technical ability as much as some of their peers or later artists that view completely ignores the context of their music, their era, and the fact that great writing can come in many different ways and forms

2025-03-12 00:36:03 +0000 UTCAs much as I would love for Lil Nas X to still keep seeing success on the same level that MONTERO did, I unfortunately feel that the opportunity has long passed him and he's now officially reached the "fell off" stage of his career. Obviously, we don't know what's exactly going on behind the scenes, but all of the decisions he's made lately have been incredibly messy. We're now in like, what, the third reset of this forthcoming album cycle? And now he's... dropping singles as promotion for another single? I dunno, it's just wild to think about. Like, even his documentary last year didn't make a mark at all. I'm honestly not sure if there's any hot take to be found here, it's just sad.

2025-03-11 21:05:18 +0000 UTCRiot Act was also needlessly toothless, but I do see your point about PJ being pretty consistently good overall, if not great. However, the terms of what makes a great rock band are too subjective for any choice to be irrefutable.

2025-03-11 16:03:36 +0000 UTCMixing isn’t that important as long as the song ideas are good. Most of the time basic mixing is needed, but some milliseconds adjustments on attacks, release and shit doesn’t really matter that much. But it’s the engineers work tho

2025-03-11 08:04:39 +0000 UTCNo Code was an intentional step back from fame - a step they started taking with Vitalogy and then continued with this album. This era assured Pearl Jam would be free to make the music THEY wanted to - on their terms. So, no lol

2025-03-11 06:20:00 +0000 UTCDirt is my least favorite of the Staley-era Alice in Chains albums. Facelift is Layne’s best album vocally, and Jar of Flies/Tripod are very In Utero-esque in how intimate, personal, chaotic and beautiful they are.

2025-03-11 06:16:17 +0000 UTCI hope they make a brand New Marvel versus Capcom game. It's been what, 14 years since UMVC3 had first released? The franchise has been dormant since then, it's so weird. I liked the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics they put out last year, it allowed me to play MVC2 for the first time, but I just need more. I get that Marvel Rivals is highly popular, but I'm more of a fighting game type of guy than 6v6 hero shooter. I need to punch Thanos in the jaw while playing as Viewtiful Joe, you do not understand.

2025-03-11 02:52:50 +0000 UTCI feel there is this increasing trend of "wink, nod" activism in a lot of music nowadays. Part of me feels this is because in the modern zeitgeist any directly inflammatory political messaging in music or art is "tryhard" or "cringey", which is fair, but if there was ever a time where musicians, especially ones with political convictions, should speak up through their art, now would be the time. I'm also not against the idea of expressing these clear issues through a lens of high concept or poetic expression. Kendrick for example really defined a lot of conscious rap of the last decade by doing do. I just don't like artists giving me the political equivalent of those "when you see it, you'll s**t bricks" memes, as it feels low effort while STILL going to go over most people's heads anyway. A little bluntness never hurt anyone

2025-03-11 01:08:52 +0000 UTCAt the risk of talking shit as well as rehashing old news, Pitchfork’s 27 Rap Albums of 2024 is easily the worst list I’ve ever seen. Not only does it read like they are purposefully omitting the bigger and more critically acclaimed releases, but it’s genuinely some of the worst music I’ve ever heard. I tried every album on the list, and it wasn’t just “mid.” It was borderline unlistenable at times. The list includes rappers like RRoxket who legitimately make awful music, with a very small following. I almost felt like I was getting punked. I am not sure what Pitchfork thinks makes for good rap music in 2024, but it’s not this.

2025-03-11 00:50:24 +0000 UTCIn terms of soul and R&B in the '70s, Gil Scott-Heron's 'Pieces of a Man' stands up there with classics like 'What's Going On' and 'Songs in the Key of Life'. Jazzy ballads like "A Sign of the Ages" and "The Prisoner" are stunningly beautiful and "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" is going down as one of the most influential songs ever (especially after the Kendrick halftime show).

2025-03-11 00:38:00 +0000 UTCUnderrated album: Destiny Fulfilled by Destiny's Child! It's not their best, but it's the only Destiny's Child album where the other members aren't just cynically used as Beyoncé's back-up singers and, despite its flaws, it sounds like three friends collaborating and making something together as opposed to a means to an end for Beyoncé's career. Sometimes all you need is a good hangout album. Also the whole notion that Michelle's bad singer is bullshit. She has a understated classic R&B/Soul voice and people just consider her the "lesser" because she's not the best pop belter. Most singing is not best singing.

2025-03-10 21:41:34 +0000 UTCThere’s some thing about “High frequency” jam band or edm festival music that’s incredibly off putting. 2025-03-10 20:38:56 +0000 UTCA take you hate: Pearl Jam, with the Dark Matter acclaim and popularity, are now almost irrefutably the greatest American rock band of all time. They’re insanely influential, consistently successful, never had a bomb and/or flop and have dictated the terms of their success throughout their career. Bands like Nirvana or Jane’s Addiction are too short-lived and bands with longer careers like Metallica and Beach Boys (sorry, Giggens) have a bunch of awful material polluting the back end of their discography. There’s no better choice.

2025-03-10 20:38:00 +0000 UTCThis is probably not the place to do this but I’ve had no luck with other avenues. Last year my daughter was born and, such was the monumental inspiration and life changing experience she brought with her, that in the first 6 weeks of her life I both wrote and recorded a new album, Theo. This album is currently the 35th highest rated album of the year on AlbumOfTheYear.org with over 300 ratings. It’s the 6th highest user rated Singer-songwriter album of 2024 between Laura Marling and Cameron Winter. I am especially proud of this. It was recorded through one microphone in live takes at the end of my and my partner’s bed - the bed we now share with this astonishing little life. It was released without a label and has achieved what it has through my own promotional efforts. But most importantly it encapsulates all the awe a new father has for his daughter. I’ve been trying to get it in front of Anthony in innumerable ways over the last few months and - this isn’t especially a hot take - but I genuinely believe this record is something special and so seem to many of the people who’ve heard it. I would be tremendously honoured to finally have it grace the needle drop team. It’s called Theo and it’s the 17th full length album I’ve released under my own name. Kindest, Luke De-Sciscio

2025-03-10 20:34:07 +0000 UTCas big of a Kendrick fan I am, this recent rap beef has brought out the worst out of both fandoms. While yes it is true that Drake stans are delusional than ever and have showcased an unprecedented amount of cognitive bias to believe that Kendrick lost and how pathetic Drake is to hip hop culture, Kendrick fans have shown just how obnoxious they can be through sheer amounts of glazing. Many of the conversations I’ve had with college students this past year has sometimes made me want to not associate with such obnoxious fans. I just hope our fanbase doesn’t become as psychotic as Kanye’s weirdo/cultish fanbase

2025-03-10 20:33:36 +0000 UTCIt makes no sense that Eminem is the face of 'white' hip hop over the Beastie Boys when the latter are a decade his senior, just as influential [if not more so], and have a much higher quality discography than he does. Hell, 'Paul's Boutique' ALONE curb stomps anything Em ever did in his career.

2025-03-10 20:32:56 +0000 UTCIn a career filled with masterful film compositions, John Williams' score for Jurassic Park is one of his weakest.
