2023-09-24 22:25:03 +0000 UTCA band name is surprisingly irrelevant to their chances of success. If the music's great, the cream will rise to the top and they will find their audience and critical acclaim. If the "Butthole Surfers" can become a household name, anything goes. I think if ''the Smiths'' went with their first draft and called themselves ''the Walking Wounded", they'd be just as legendary today. A band name should be fun and memorable and musicians shouldn't overthink it.

2023-09-20 09:51:55 +0000 UTCThe vast majority of the population just wants a nice melody to listen to in the background of whatever they’re doing. Some genres/artists are just never going to meet this requirement.

2023-09-20 09:46:56 +0000 UTCThe one hit wonder is slowly dying along with the music video and it's a crying shame. One hit wonders can offer a lot of playful and fun tracks to the musical year (for example: La Macarena, Crush, Torn) and they're dying in the era of the big business and calculated music industry. I came of age in the late '90s where MTV was dominated by one hit wonder music videos. They were often cynically marketed by the good looks of their female singer but nowadays a song like the Cardigans' Lovefool wouldn't break through into popular consciousness. And we're all the worse for it. Do you miss fun one hit wonders and why do you think they went the way of the dodo? What were some of your favorite one hit wonders when you were young?

2023-09-19 02:14:44 +0000 UTCSufjan Stevens' Silver and Gold is a great Christmas album. It's a shame more indie artists don't release more christmas records to counterbalance the stuffy and cheesy christmas 'standards' by Bing Crosby, etc. Low, Aimee Mann and Sufjan prove that you can make a down to earth and cool christmas album in the modern era that you actually want to spin to make the holiday bearable. Sufjan reminds us that spirituality can be a good thing, it doesn't have to be about organized religion.

2023-09-19 02:03:56 +0000 UTCXiu Xiu's "Mary Turner Mary Turner" is the Texas Chainsaw Massacre of music. I don't scary easily but Girl with a Basket of Fruit truly contains some of the most harrowing sounds and lyrics ever put to music. It's a great piece of art because it doesn't exist purely for shock value: Mary Turner portrays the horror of a slavery era lynching vividly to rub people's nose in the horror of our actual recent history as a so called "civilized society". I wish more art would sacrifice commercial appeal to make bold and brave statements like this.

2023-09-19 01:56:54 +0000 UTCHappier Than Ever wasn’t a sophomore slump. One of the big reasons the album wasn’t as big as her debut, was because most of the mainstream music audience had their sights set on other popular music at the time; such as Sour and Fearless (Taylor’s Version). It also didn’t help that it was released in the middle of the Donda/CLB pandemonium. While you can make the valid criticism that the production may not be as adventurous and otherworldly as her debut, I still think it is a great sophomore album and shows the maturity and coming of age for Billie excellently, and is the furthest thing from a sophomore slump.

2023-09-18 21:31:47 +0000 UTCI think the newer and generally shortened format of songs has finally and fundamentally altered the way I perceive music. Even 4 to 6 minute tracks now seem like they last forever, and it's a strange and jarring feeling to realize how that feels when I look back and see it's only been about 5 minutes when it seems it has been going on for an inordinately long amount of time. I still love longer songs and older music that I know is long-form, but when I discover new music or artists with longer songs now it seems like a much lengthier, more challenging experience than it used to. Is this a bad thing and do I just have ADHD lol?

2023-09-16 12:06:49 +0000 UTCBlu is an all-time talent and needs to be considered in the top 10-5 conversation for rappers. He is truly in a league of his own as a lyricist, the only similar artists before him I could compare his style/level of mastery to are rappers like Nas and Jay Z. He also works with some of the best producers in the world, mainly Exile, who deserves his own conversation about being an all time elite producer. With any producer he’s always either creating a chill song with classic west coast flows telling you how he’s the greatest and most under-appreciated MC or writing an incredibly meaningful dissection of a topic like religion or politics. Even the less talked about records in his back catalog have unique, impressive, and even experimental tracks to dig through. Blu is a rapper anyone should be able to enjoy to some capacity, he simply makes it look easy. If you’re a real hip hop fan he deserves be in your top 15 best all time or at least your top 5 most underrated all time

2023-09-14 04:26:26 +0000 UTCWe are living through a karaoke Renaissance right now. With the advancements in AI vocal removal technology and people having a ton of free time over lockdown, THOUSAND of new karaoke tracks have been made for FREE by enthusiasts who were sick of hearing the same old top 40 songs at their local karaoke bar (posted on YT or file sharing in karaoke creator discords). I personally have made tracks for Alex Cameron, Blood Orange, Royal Headache, AJJ, Dorian Electra, 100 Gecs etc. that sound amazing haha. I think artists should be putting out karaoke videos of their own music. There is huge demand for it. If you haven't gone to karaoke in a while, go and check out how massive the song selection has become!

2023-09-13 15:19:24 +0000 UTCThe Downward Spiral could be a 10/10 if you remove Big Man With A Gun and replace it with the song Burn (from the Natural Born Killers soundtrack). While I love the energy and overall production of Big Man With A Gun, the downright absurd lyrics don't really fit neatly or thematically with the rest of TDS.

Newer bands like Vacant Voice, Straight Shot Home, I Met A Yeti are popping up too that are keeping the subgenre(s) fresh. WHY MELLON, WHY?!?! 2023-09-13 06:37:59 +0000 UTCi fear that much like the film industry has stifled the mid-budget comedy, the music industry has stifled the mid-horny hit. like where is the zz top, the def lepperd, the van halen, the whitesnake of this era. yes granted the horny gap has been closed by other genres (munches and dogtooth havers rise up, and horny house as a genre continues to knock it out of the park, among many others), but the lyrics are often too clearly and obviously horny. i find myself missing that sweet middle ground of big anthemic sound that’s a little cheesy and is both somewhat subtle and catchy fun enough to sing out loud to, but suggestively horny enough that you’d think twice about doing so in front of your parents. caroline polachek’s so hot you’re hurting my feelings definitely got it, and wet leg’s chaise long too, but damn it - where is this era’s pour some sugar on me!!!!

2023-09-08 01:20:00 +0000 UTCThe early 2000s (specifically 2000-2007) is one of the best eras in all of music. It was a perfect storm, in which so many great genres for the time were peaking. You had post rock hitting a peak with albums like Skinny Fists, All of A Sudden I Miss Everyone, etc. You also had amazing rap music from Jay Z to Kanye to DOOM, amazing house records like Discovery and Cross, and mainstream rock and metal was still good with artists like SOAD, White Stripes, The Strokes, Tool, and more. Also, experimental / electronic music was incredible because it was at a time where technological advancements in music were making the music sound so fresh and ahead of its time while also still having that human element to it (perfect example - Donuts by J Dilla), but not to a point where it just sounded like a computer making music. An absolutely amazing period for music!

2023-09-07 18:15:14 +0000 UTCGrunge will eventually be regarded as the most essential, beloved genre in rock. 50 years from now, it will be not only the last commercially dominant era of rock, it will be socially and politically relevant, and Nirvana and Pearl Jam are only going to grow more popular and beloved with time with a dozens of popular hits and, importantly, iconic videos that personalize the bands to future generations. Add in Soundgarden and Alice In Chain's dominance over metal, plus the fact that music nerds AND audiences love alternative rock, you basically have a genre perfectly steeped in both rock and underground music that can satisfy pop, rock, and metal fans who will eventually disregard musicians who are anti-feminist, homophobic, racist, and date under-aged girls - all of which grunge bands are entirely innocent of. The stage is set for grunge to be the ultimate representation of rock for future generations.

2023-09-06 19:25:30 +0000 UTCIt is near impossible for an album to be 15+ tracks and be a 10/10 record. 2023-09-06 19:21:04 +0000 UTCOn the topic of separating art from the artist: if their personal drama/shittiness begins affecting the quality and content of their work in a negative way, then that artist clearly doesn't want you to separate their work from them, and it's time to stop consuming their work because their work is now just as shitty as them. Examples: Red Hot Chili Peppers releasing "Catholic School Girls Rule," Tory Lanez releasing "Daystar," Ronnie Radke releasing any Falling in Reverse song. Even Daughters, who you mentioned recently, can be retroactively seen as an admission of abusive tendencies now when before it just seemed like psychological horror fiction

2023-09-06 19:20:59 +0000 UTCIn light of WGA/SAG strikes, musicians can & should strike too. Specifically against the likes of Spotify, Apple, and so on. Those companies play the same role as the major Hollywood studios -- essentially distributing the product and taking control of financial / IP ownership. If actors & writers can stand together to demand fair wages, I think musical artists can also withhold their work to demand better compensation. The two industries mirror each other pretty closely -- hoping the music world takes note.
