😤 LET’S ARGUE 😤 (September 2019 Thread)

Update 9/10: The episode has been shot and the rough cut is done. Thank you to everyone who wrote in! The vid should be up in the next couple of days.

You know what to do—Comment below with your HOT TAKES, UNPOPULAR OPINIONS, and TOUGH QUESTIONS. We'll look through all the responses a week from today.

But first, something decidedly agreeable—We are so thankful for your continued support, and if you're a newcomer we love ya too. The first month went about as smoothly as it could and resulted in a quality episode of ARGUE, so here's to an even smoother September.

Again, thank you! Now get to arguing!

Comments

Kero Kero Bonito has a lot more potential to make commerically successful music with their new sound than their bubblegum electro pop.

Aiden Ferry

2019 so far has been the best year for female artists

Lana Del Rey had the steepest upward trajectory in music this decade. From that terrible SNL performance in 2012 (and plenty of boring albums after that), she has now risen to "critical darling" status.

Sam Mosher

That's only the context that makes Song Cycle by Van Dyke Parks so remarkable. Musically it's predominantly an avant-gardish mess without any sense of direction. This album represents psychedelic folk at its worst

Another Green World and Here Come The Warm Gets are just 70s vaporwave

If you're the Roger Ebert of music criticism, who would you say is the Gene Siskel of music criticism?

Kendrick is waiting to release next year so he can have the best album of the decade for two decades in a row although he still won’t top TPAB

Post Malone is no longer a rapper

YES! I'm not the only one who feels this way! F#A#∞ all the way!

This is why I don’t hold 808s in a high regard. It’s an OK album, but not any better because of the influence

Sebastian Bravo

Shawn Cee has better taste in Hip Hop than you Melon. Sorry, not Sorry.

Nathaniel Zaccagnini

You’re pumping out hella content these days and I imagine your schedule is lugubrious. My tough question is how are you doing, man? Are you taking some time to chill?

Chris Hickson

Hollywood’s Bleeding is Post Malone’s best album.

Madlib is alive.

A Merlyn solo album wouldn’t be all that interesting. Nothing against him, in fact he’s one of my favourite Brockhampton members. He works best in the groups and sort of bounces off everyone else. Also his style wouldn’t work that well for a solo album either.

How much longer do you predict this current wave of trap dominated rap will last before something new finally puts this god awful saga to bed?

Chris Hickson

IGOR is a future classic, and will be revered as one of the best albums this decade has to offer.

James M.

Hypermagic Mountain is an album that is undeniably worth a classic review

Chris Hickson

Hot take: king gizzard and the lizard wizard’s best album was actually Eyes Like The Sky. The story and storytelling were phenomenal and paired with a track list that would’ve worked well in any 60’s spaghetti western

Chris Hickson

Marvel phase 4 will singlehandedly kill the comic book movie genre and Implementing a multiverse will render all of the deaths so far meaningless.

Cal would host this segment better than you.

The Flaming Lips' "Spongebob & Patrick Confront the Psychic Wall of Energy" on the movie's soundtrack is a 10/10 song and people don't appreciate it as much as they should. That song, and the entire album for that matter, is an early predecessor to memes in music and memeing tf out of Spongebob

lowkeymatt

If Histoire de Melody Nelson was an english album it would be as widely known as Pet Sounds and Sgt Pepper

ThickasaBiggles

Parker Corey is the most talented member of Injury Reserve.

simon

Sans deltarune will never be in smash!!!!!

Darksoulsdeathsoundmale

New Wave is the most important genre of the 80s

Riley Schmedeman

I really like the hella songs with vocals. Also, Tripper > hold your horse is.

Mindless Self Indulgence has incredible work (eg: Frankenstein Girls), their mix of punk/alternative rock with electronica is one of the most interesting of the 2000s but they are often cast aside due to being perceived as "strange" or "perverted"

Omar AlHashmi

edit: you are braver than any us marine, godspeed

vvvvvomen

The way album sales are counted needs to change immediately. It’s essentially now a race to whoever can sell the most merch with a useless download code no one uses.

BigBabyBerkis

Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is the best sci-fi book series of all time

Emma Dobson

No, the music sucked.

Emma Dobson

I wish, but it’s either warren or biden

Emma Dobson

As a Bowser main , Pac-Man is a major PITA

haughty garbage

Music released during the second half of the year tend to be better than music released in the first half.

Daniel H

Portishead's Third influenced the whole experimental rock scene for the 2000s and 2010. You can heart bits of King Gizzard, Black Midi, Swans all within the one album

Alex Vorstermans

If you ever go on Hot Ones it should be a 30 min Let's Argue wear you eat Hot Sauce and Sean poses all of the Hot Takes

haughty garbage

Lcd Soundsystem, despite making dance music, are horrible for parties. People get bored by the time the songs get interesting

Car Seat Headrest > The Strokes. Although the strokes has a more consistent discography, CSH has done more to push the rock genre in a new and more interesting direction.

The Dear Hunter is a great progressive rock band that is very versatile

Dylan Muschitiello

That is a sad take and one for people that hate change or experimentation in music.

kitfistofangirl

The production of the album is only a bonus if the album is well written and performed well enough.

kitfistofangirl

The solo demo of Oxygen by Michael Gira is better than the Swans version.

simon

JPEGMAFIA is the best producer living right now.

simon

The Wall isn’t Pink Floyds worst album by any means, but the second disk is a pretentious slog until The Trial.

simon

Animal Rights and Global Warming are anything but political issues and should not be treated as such. The last thing we need is more moderate democrats shying away from saving the planet because they don’t want to lose support from the right.

simon

Yeah any sort of death of an artist can do so suicide especially. Cobain's a lot of fans went back and looked at his music crazily looking for any sort of hidden messages even though Kurt always said there were none

Torin D

The death of an artist can recontextualize an album. Not necessarily for the better or worse, but its concept can be made more apparent in terms of the method or sudden nature of it. For instance, Swimming might not necessarily be better, but it can be viewed in a new light in accordance to the tragic passing of Mac so soon after.

Gray Lefkowitz

No song has ever been improved by a Pitbull feature.

Zachary F Parker

"She said I'm in the wrong class I said I'm lost"

Robin Gross

Everything that Pharrell touches is beautiful

Reggaeton is just a fancy word for “different lyrics over the same dembow rhythm” and while artists like J Balvin are talented, they’re about as musically creative as someone like DJ Khaled.

Griffin

KIDZ BOP SEE GHOSTS would be fire and you know it

Bongo Cat is the greatest musician of our generation. He can play any instrument and sing any song.

My mom actually enjoys death grips and compared their style to the artwork of Jean-Michel Basquiat. Thought it was an interesting comparison and was wondering your thoughts on it.

Kendrick Lamar and Playboy Carti are essentially the same artist.

purple

Th' Faith Healers influence on late 90s indie rock going unacknowledged is a crime on par with the Tuskegee Experiments. Not really but it's an outlandish argument to be sure.

CPJMLT LTD

The Alchemist is an underrated producer that deserves way more recognition than he gets.

BigBabyBerkis

It would have been better if Tool just never released another album.

I find it weird that nobody is addressing the part Zack Fox says "free palestine" in jesus is the one because it feels like a really empty and stupid thing to say without any context.

Sapot

Rock music is in no way dead, if you do even the slightest bit of research into the current musical landscape you'll find a wealth of highly experimental and compelling rock music.

Not my personal take but, a band that is not formerly of a genre but is venturing into (Such as King Gizzard adopting Thrash) is considered disingenuous and distasteful. Unless the band initiated in the specific genre, they should not be allowed to branch out into other genre territories if they want to stay commendable.

Benjamin Lisboa

Bernie's gonna win

Ministry- the land of rape and honey is one of (if not the) most influential industrial albums of the 80’s

Emma Dobson

Matt Pike is actually an unfrozen caveman.

Kevin Marcellus Horan

Kids of the future will revere XXXtentacion and Lil Peep as legends in hip hop, just like we did with 2pac and Biggie. and there's nothing we can do about it.

Bruno Mars is better than Michael Jackson

Super Smash Bros Ultimate will go down in history as the greatest game in the series. Even the most hardcore Melee fans won't be able to stay delusional very long. It's everything Smash Bros. wanted to be since the beginning: it's both fun and competitive, super complete, and balanced to the point where it's almost a miracle that such a game exists.

Musicians who attempt the transition into acting are more often than not suffering from hyper-inflated egos. (noticeable exceptions: donald glover, lady gaga, there are probably are few others too).

Everyone is arguing about who's fan base is the most toxic, but no one ever mentions the classical music fan base. Classical music stans may be the most elitest and toxic people on the planet. The culture of classical music fans is one gigantic, incredibly gate kept, euro-centric circle jerk.

pretzels

There are no "guilty pleasure" artists/songs in the Internet era. Any person could tell me that they enjoy any kind of music and I wouldn't bat an eyelid because movements such as poptimism have allowed listeners to feel validated/empowered when listening to music that might not typically be considered "them" (the same cannot be said for other mediums like film and literature)

The fact that youre probably gonna rate the new lana del rey above the new tool makes you braver than any us marine, godspeed

vvvvvomen

Rnb is pretty much dead at this point the ratio is really low, there's barely any ballads, barely any dance routines and most importantly 0 Authenticity 🐆

Caspa

Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk is the best Emperor album. Also Bane is probably the best Hardcore band of the 2000's.

eoin

Paul blart: mall cop 2 is the best movie ever reLeased. From thE excellent leAd performance by kevin jameS, to thE perfectly plain cinematography tHat exEmplifies the mundanity of a maLl coP's life while siMultanEously acting as a contrast to the extreme events of the film, the film is excellently crafted and for that I must give PAUL BLART, the IndiSpuTable best a bOOming, STRONG 10.

Good taste isn't about the music you listen to. It's about wether or not you have an understanding of what makes the music you're listening to good to you

Mitchell Blodgett

F#A#∞ is better than Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven. The different song passages flow together much better, and it is an overall much tighter package. Antennas to Heaven can feel a bit bloated.

Kevin Frey

What does Some Rap Songs do that 17 by Jahseh doesn't?

Iridescence is BH's 2nd best album, after Saturation II. It only gets hate because of the Ameer situation, and the narrative that it was made relatively quickly, and therefore is unpolished and bad.

Shanehck

Chocolate chip trip is just the matrix version of rat salad.

If you had to, which of the 5 perfect 10s you gave would you get rid of, like never existed

Cooper

I was expecting maybe a 6 at least but the red flannel definitely made my heart quiver

Rosalía is one of few mainstream artists that deserve their fame

Elliott

The new "mau5ville" EP's / Compilations are pure shit. They might have one or two decent deadmau5 songs on them as fan-service and then have half a dozen remixes and tracks from obscure artists that no one knows or cares about. If you want a good "Record Label Compilation" album then listen to the "EdRec" volume series from Ed Banger Records. At least all the artists on that label each have a different sound which makes all the tracks off any "EdRec" comp have a good sense of variety and favorability; making the compilations not sound as bland and repetitive as most of mau5trap's recent projects.

Uncle Moe

Tough question: Do you think the commercial failure of Pinkerton upon its release had anything to do with rivers Cuomo's desire to write more bland and poppy songs on following albums or was it probably inevitable?

Adam mezzarone

"Red Rain" by The White Stripes doesn't get the love that it deserves.

Anderson Paak will go down as one of the greatest artist in hip-hop / R&B of the decade.

The “Naked” version of Let It Be is better than the actual Phil Spector produced original.

Steely Dan's discography is required listening for anyone who is a fan of rock music in general.

Semo Adms

Your positive reviews make for more engaging content than your negative reviews. The positive reviews offer more insight into not only the music itself, but your tastes and what ignites your passion. And even if that weren't the case, after watching people shout about what they don't like into cameras for years, the positive stuff is just more fun to watch these days.

Uncle Jam

A Weekend in the City is Bloc Party’s true magnum opus. The way the band fused additional instrumentation with their punchy and forceful indie rock style made for some truly lush and compelling material, and when combined with Kele’s lyrics about the spectrum of life experiences in an urban setting, it creates something that I see as a step up from Silent Alarm (which is still awesome).

Mudvayne's LD-50 was actually pretty good, despite the cliched nu metal WWE-mask-Slipknot-headass images they put themselves through in their videos

I'd argue that the term "banger" has evolved past this very strict and limited definition. If you don't like this most recent evolution of the term that's fine, but don't discourage the people that embrace it.

Pol

People are so often fighting about what is and isn't the genre they like it's sad and can really push people away from exploring a genre you really see it in metal but its getting common elsewhere aswell

Torin D

Pig destroyer is the best grindcore band of all time. Their 3 masterful classic albums, prowler in the yard, terrifyer, and phantom limb unlocked grindcore's potential to be more than just a 30 second onslaught of ugly guitars and drums being played incessantly. That's not to say other grindcore bands are rendered useless because of this fact, but pig destroyer has remained the best despite their more lackluster releases that followed the classics. Nasum comes close tho

Pol

PS: I think this is why a lot of attempts to write political music in a traditional way come off as hokey or lame. It's hard to express rage or frustration without it seeming like an artistic compromise or a cheapening of the theme when you reach for well-worn hooks and riffs.

Chanse Macabre

yacht rock is a top 3 sub genre of rock

Kameron Martinez

I feel like we're beginning to reach the limits of what can be conveyed by the Western Equal Temperament system. After so much exploration of different chords and intervals, it seems like we're running out of ways to truly shock or surprise the listener without reaching for samples or atonality. Not to say that we're moving toward some sort of "post-harmony" system, but more like harmony will be less at the forefront of musical expression.

Chanse Macabre

Limp Bizkit was only hated on because Fred Durst openly supported piracy and Napster. The media started to shit on him for bullshit reason about woodstock 99 to punish him for crossing the line with the corporate executive.

Given the rapid growth of technology and its increasing availability, the tone/timbre of music is now more important than actual melodies or riffs, especially considering that the vast amount of sonic textures we have the ability to create may as well be infinite in number, while melodies continue to be limited by the fact that there's really only so much you can do with the 12 notes in the chromatic scale.

I already posted this on twitter but I’m putting it here too in hopes that you will confront this undeniable truth

Jacob Axelrad

Who Says by Selena Gomez & the Scene is a more compelling anthem for self love than Logic’s 1-800-273-8256

Jacob Axelrad

It's A-PREE-CIATE not A-PRUSH-IATE, mumblemouth.

Javier Mendoza

Frank sinatra was an industry plant.

very hot take here

Jake LaMotta

Baron von Bullshit Rides Again is the best Modest Mouse Album.

ElephantofDoom

Jazz is experiencing a resurgence, and while it will never reach the height that it had once reached, it will have more of an impact over the next couple decades than most people expect.

King Gizzard is the best thing to happen to rock music this decade

IGOR is a 7 at best, not a bad album at all, but extremely overrated and overhyped

ari

I am bad at music

The reason so many people are unhealthy is because, since the 1950s, we've chosen to design our cities around cars instead of humans.

carsausage

Kendrick is easily the best rapper in the game currently and has some of the most solid discography of any rapper

LSD52

*for music in that style and genre

you should have given The Weeknd more credit for his first 3 mixtapes. the lyrics might come off stale at times, but the consistency and artistic expression has never been seen in such a comprehensive format.

The 2010s is the most interesting decade for rap thus far

Jake LaMotta

instrumental music is underrated! Vocalist aren't always needed for a full and engaging sound.

The best beck album is one foot in the grave. It has the most unique writing style, and creates a world and vibe that none of his other albums achieved. Even if you dont think its his best, its still vastly overlooked in his discography.

Brendan

Do you review 1-song albums such as Dopesmoker and Flood differently from other albums?

IGOR is still album of the year

Cold War Kids are underrated. Except their last album (which was a dumpster fire) they have one of the most consistent discographies in rock music since the mid 2000s

Max Propadalo

East coast hip hop was better than West coast hip hop

Die Antwoord were ahead of the rap game by 5 years. From their loud explosive trap style beats, wild internet personas, and terrible tattoos and lyrics I feel like they would have been bigger if they came out a few years later

Do you think people who form a large amount of their music literacy from music websites/youtube/spotify recommendations have a drastically different vibe than people who learn about bands by seeing them live/being in bands themselves/being part of what we know as an in person "music scene". IMO someone who learns about industrial music for example through Wikipedia then heads straight to Youtube feels drastically different than someone who sees NIN live, yet they could both be considered music fans in 2019. I caution to use terms like legitimacy but it feels like that could be a factor.

haughty garbage

Liquid Swords practically spawned experimental rap, and ppl who say it is not classic because it lacks influence have a very narrow taste in rap music.

Minyoung Kim

Kanye and Kid Cudi have just triggered the post rap movement with Kids See Ghosts

Music Videos have now become redundant in the age of streaming. Music Videos were once a form of music promotion, but now as we discover new music on Spotify, Apple Music etc, they’re kinda pointless.

Luke Berrie

Joe Biden is a person who stutters. You don't have to like his politics (I don't) to know that all this speculation about his mental state is wrong and based on his speech impediment rather than any real cognitive decline.

Louie Gross

Do you have a subjective favourite genre? I know you listen to everything but do you have one genre that you personally prefer?

Tim Arendt

The popularity of swing music in the 90s wasn’t THAT bad and it gave us some really fun songs to dance to

Griffin

King Gizzard is a top 3 best rock bands of the decade. They’re one of the most consistent, and creative. And appeal to a wide audience. When you can make a very solid, fully acoustic album AND make a very solid thrash metal album while still maintaining your core sound, Id say that solidifies them as one of the best. Also they’ve made 15 albums and there’s been little to no duds

Riley Schmedeman

what band/artist has the best music videography of all time? (in your opinion)

Aidan

You are biased against Cal Chuchestas music because he is your roommate

egg56

Fear Inoculum is actually a good album and deserves much better than a 4/10

Purpskurp

The Unicorn’s WWCOHWWG is a brilliant record, but too many people let it overshadow the brilliance of the follow up: Island’s Return to the Sea. An amazing record that is a more mature evolution of the unicorn’s sound, albeit missing some of the original lineup.

tryhard

Death grips make the best music to run to

Africa Speaks is the best Santana album in 40+ yrs and you should have reviewed it

Señor C

THIS

logan rowan

Streaming services should incorporate more physical release features. Such as: lyrics, artwork, points of contact, thanks, photos and FUCKING CREDITS!!

Puffy AmiYumi doesnt get enough credit for introducing a large audience of kids to j-pop in 2000’s before they knew what it was (They did the theme song for Teen Titans)

Logan Colburn

The Wu-Tang Clan is one of the greatest Nu Metal bands ever.

People should reserve the term “banger” for hype, hard-hitting and aggressive tracks. Instead of just using it any time they enjoy a song even if it’s a chill, quiet, slow and/or sad song.

logan rowan

The Colour in Anything is James Blake’s best album and I will forever disagree with your score

Most "classic" records are overrated. Not because they aren't good, but because their fans hype them up relentlessly, until they reach a reputation that no album made by mere mortals could live up to.

Owen W

The level of influence an album has on future artists or other albums doesn’t make it any better

Ghost is one of the most important rock bands for the past 15 years and Opus Eponymous and Meliora are two of the best rock records to come out this decade.

Hannibal Buress is surprisingly good at rapping

Miles Lamborghini

Ab soul is better than kendrick lamar.
