Apple's IOS App Policy Changes (IMPORTANT)

Now onwards to Apple's policy change with in-app purchases that affect Patreons.

If you are not aware, Apple is requiring Patreon to use their in-app purchase system and remove all other billing systems from the Patreon iOS app by November 2024. 

This means ANY pledges made through Patreon's IOS app is subject to Apple’s 30% App Store fee, which means their system only supports the subscription billing model. Meaning: Patreon is forced to have ALL creators switch to their subscription billing system.

A couple months ago I made a poll asking you guys if we preferred the subscription billing method or the First-Of-The-Month method, which First-Monthly won overwhelmingly (which was preferable because I could make a post at the end of each month giving people a heads up before they get charged, a courtesy that Patreon doesn't have but they really should) but now we are being forced to use the other.

Note: If you are currently a paid patreon, this will not affect you. Subscription billing will still consider the first of the month as your charge date.

These were the options I was prompted with: to increase the price of my tiers in the IOS app or to cover the cost myself:

As you can see, on top of Patreon's platform and transaction fees this is a pretty serious change, and in my personal opinion, this is awful and predatory as hell. Thanks apple.

On my end: I'll be keeping my prices the same in the IOS app and covering Apple's fees myself. 

• Remember that this price change only affects people that are pledged through the IOS app. If you are pledged on desktop or on android/google phone, you are unaffected.  

• The billing schedule change will only affect new members and members that un-pledge and return at a later date.

If you are currently pledged to anyone on Patreon via the IOS app, you can bypass their 30% fee by going on desktop or another phone and pledging there instead. You will still be able to access your membership on your phone in the IOS app, just purchasing a pledge via app makes the fee apply.

I have no idea if Patreon sent out information or reminders of this change to member accounts, so I wanted to make this post just in case. I will continue to make unpledge reminder posts at the end of each month at least until the end of the year (If anyone knows if Patreon does or has a plan to alert members of an upcoming charge, do let me know!)
