2025-06-13 02:31:15 +0000 UTCThat guy drank the Kool-Aid so hard. In the attention economy, we reward characters. Somehow, the characters get large, get a large audience, and have a loud voice. At no point was the message evaluated. It's no so much a marketplace of ideas as a cesspool of half-formed thoughts anymore. Consumers have a personal responsibility to assess what they are consuming, mainly because no one else is going to do it for them. However, they also seem to overlook the fact that they have this responsibility. The idea that Canada is dependent on the US, in the derogatory way it's often meant, is disingenuous. Canada is no more dependent on the US than the US is dependent on international trade. It's called a planet, and all the countries trade with each other. That we're physically co-located on the same continent doesn't add to the conversation. And what makes Canada different from Mexico in this regard? The whole topic is stupid. There was a point in time when stupid issues didn't get attention, weren't profitable as a result, and we wouldn't suffer through the stupidity pandemic. But calling it stupid isn't enough. These misguided ideas are genuinely harmful in that they occupy limited mental space that could otherwise be used for good ideas.
