I am only 8 minutes in, and to my knowledge they don't actually explain it anytime in the anime but NO, Eclipse was a real horse, that at that particular time and for the races that they ran, if you were a certain distance behind another horse, you were disqualified. Eclipse was an anomaly of a horse. So fast in fact, that he would disqualify even second place. hence the Eclipse first, the rest nowhere, since the rest of the horses were disqualified. Since most owners wanted to give their horses a chance at victory and not be disqualified, alot of the races he was in were low horse registrations, or a bunch of dropouts. hope this helps if you see it
