I've seen people who normally don't like anime enjoy the show because of its structure. Graham, your dislike of episodic shows has me wondering, are you a fan of Cowboy Bebop?

Taihou was abused by the former emperor which resulted in her getting pregnant and having a daughter the former emperor denied the allegations that he was the father and so the court accused one of the doctors and threw him and the baby out of the palace. Taihou's punishment was to stay forever trapped in the court. We later see her as the lady that hosts the βscary storiesβ night. They call her daughter the banished princess. Shishou later took care of the doctor and the child. Once the child grew older shishou married her, and they had suirei after his first wife dies he then marries lady shenmei and they have loulan. Suireiβs grandfather is the former emperor which makes jinshi her half cousin I hope this kinda helps explain things!
