NARRATED: Antique Fractal Vise [Restoration]

This is the greatest vise ever made.  End of discussion.

NARRATED: Antique Fractal Vise [Restoration]

Comments

Where do I find this narrated playlist? I've been making my own each time a video comes out since I watch it on my TV and have to jump through hoops to get it added from Patreon.

Brian Roehm

The jokes at the end of the original video of this restoration, and discovering the narrated playlist, are why I am now subbed like 2 years later. It's all very sensual.

Huge big nut guy

This video was amazing to watch. I’ve been saving it for a time when I really needed the comfort of your soothingly sensual voice.

Lisa Mason

Fire ze missiles!

HamOnTheCob

Yes.

Hand Tool Rescue

So I'm unclear. Can I, or can I not, clamp my dick in the vise?

HamOnTheCob

Fantastic job. YouTube told me I should watch this and within a few hours I knew I had to be a patron. Congrats on the success of the video 🙌

Congratulations, Eric! 🎉🎈🧨. - you definitely broke the YouTube code on this one, with 8.7M views as of today (July 8, 2021). You deserve it!!

Awesome work fella. Such an amazing design and some cool engineering in one package!

I must be honest. I didn't know what is was looking at from the thumbnail. What an amazing work of engineering from 1913 and restoration from 2021.

Luther

Amazing

Hopefully this link takes you to an 1895 number of the American Machinist where the name "Acme Thread" is proposed and the thread described. https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=osu.32435063039879&view=1up&seq=13&size=150

What a delightfully overengineered piece of art!

That might be the most elegant possible mechanical design. I feel like anything with more contact area would involve pins and springs, have a weaker grip, and be virtually impossible to restore, rather than rebuild/resurrect. Definitely in my top five favorite restorations. The Inclinometer is up there, too. Your content lately has been really fascinating - the Bridgeþort is a very handsome tool but it's not the same as something which requires no electricity nor motor of any other sort. Another video in which you maintain the tools that you intend to use (much like the hand plane preservation episode) would be very nice. I look forward to your next project!

That’s brilliant! And the commercial at the end was even better!

60th Like! Whaddo I get? But I do really like this, video and tool, the vise thing.

ChuckD

Some slow speed and 2 thou a pass, otherwise it got angry.

Hand Tool Rescue

Another great video, opened my eyes to a whole new take on work holding! Do you happen to remember what approximate speeds/feeds you were using to rough down the threaded end of the new shaft? It looked like you were taking quite a healthy cut with HSS on an old southbend and you've got me curious.

Man is this a beautiful device. Sadly the video was not long enough to save me from the entire cyber security training. Please restore something else, like the monarchy.

Old Crow Bourbon

This video comes at the perfect time: when I have to do my inane annual repetative cyber security training. Thank you for rescuing me with something good to watch while I click through the crap.

Old Crow Bourbon

YESS I've been looking forward to this one! Came out great! Definitely a necessary safety warning at the end especially for some of your fellow country men

Curious. Do you have a “day job”? If yes, what do you do?

Janet Dupree

That $4.20 price... lololololol

Joseph Brzezinski

Well done! Now I just with I could find out what it sold for back then.

Any chance you can provide some rough numbers for the various jaw sizes and the dovetails? I would love to try and just make one of these out of some steel, or a set of jaws to go on an existing vise. As for getting weird inside measurements or part duplication, I have had luck making a duplicate/negative out of thermoplastic (the melt the beads in hot water stuff). Since it's a small thermal change, it doesn't really deform on cooling, and once cool, you can carefully cross section it for measurements and such.

James McI

I was able to find this reference to the company: https://books.google.com/books?id=5MlMAQAAIAAJ&pg=RA1-PA782-IA11&lpg=RA1-PA782-IA11&dq=%22mantle%22+vise+new+york&source=bl&ots=D0XU0ThKmV&sig=ACfU3U0N5ONQMj7Yc5RxLAeyNauAwbqY0Q&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwio-fXVzLDxAhW5MlkFHc2tDzsQ6AF6BAgREAM#v=onepage&q&f=false If you go through that issue there's a short article on what looks to be your vise

This is great! I want one😁

Wow. Amazing vise. Soft jaws next?

S. Nilsen

I will not clamp 🍆 in the vice, I promise

Tyler Richardson

I’m with Brooks Moses, but damn… I keep pressing 7 on my phone, and the only result is a numb index finger! In all seriousness, the perfect brother piece to your project would be for Tom Lipton to build a copy! He’s been quiet for quite a while, so maybe its the right mix of very unusual and difficult to manually machine that would inspire him. Your restoration skills just keep reaching skyward, and this is yet your best! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Marc McKenzie

Very cool vise!! Great restoration job!

So... When you start reproducing them... Will each one come with a banana for testing?

Scott Miller

Loved every minute of that. Thanks, mate. Awesome work. Especially closing the door of that cabinet. Sensual! 😄

Alaskan Rock Vodka

That first vise close blew my friggin mind!!

Coolest vice I think I’ve ever see! Awesome job!!

The ham I made from Good Eats while watching this is now very dry but has a great japanned finish! Thanks HTR!

Woodhead Works

That thing is amazing -- and more amazing that you were able to restore it so superbly!

Stephen Boots

69 payments of $4.20?? NICE!!!

Chuck Kirchner

Looks cool: when you going to produce them?🤔

That is so cool! A bored engineer made that I bet!

Brian Myers

Nice Alton Brown homage

Eric Olson

Right?!

Hand Tool Rescue

I'm here for you my child.

Hand Tool Rescue

Also, major emotional roller-coaster. My thoughts at the introduction of the vise: I want one of those even if I have to build one myself. My thoughts at the point where you start disassembling the jaws and I see the double dovetail: OMG WTF BBQ there is no way I am making one of these. Okay, back to the video to see what's coming next on this ride.

Brooks Moses

I was just thinking I hadnt seen a HTR video in a while, you must have read my mind!

Planky

That was very clever how you managed to put the "and you didn't, neener neener" on the end of the "I actually found this on eBay" sentence without saying any of the words. :) (It's actually probably a good thing I missed it there, because if I had seen it and outbid you, I'd never have known how great a loss I would have had from not having this video!)

Brooks Moses

I love it.

Xxxxx Xxxxx

Oh wow, this one's going viral for sure!

Holy crap that thing is amazing.
