Screwdriver Update!

Hello my children,

The screwdrivers are closer than ever.  New CNC machines have been procured and coding is finished.  Material choice and design have also been finalized.  Butthole is fully clenched because I may be in debt now for the rest of my life.

I am making about 100 large screwdrivers available to Patrons only very soon.

The only catch is that I won't be putting any handle scales on or hardening these ~100.

I want you all to finish them in any way you want!  I will use your finished screwdrivers as examples in the YouTube launch video.

If you don't want to do that, you can always wait until I sell them fully complete, but they will obviously be at a higher price.

These are made out of 1144 steel which means they are very very easy to harden.  If you have a blowtorch and vegetable oil, you are done.  You do not even need to temper it after hardening and there will be virtually no warping.

I will provide a template and brass pins for the handle scales, should you choose to make them out of any material.

I have had many people contact me with their ideas, and that makes me super excited to see what you all come up with!

That's awesome! When will they be available do you think?

Hhhmmm... Looking at that space for the scales & wondering if it'd be worthwhile to try & talk Peter Brown into dipping something silly or inappropriate for scales...

Scott Miller

Hahaha yes.

Hand Tool Rescue

Cool. ...it came to me in a dream, a set of (carbide insert) woodturning tools with perfect handles.

S. Nilsen

When can I demand, ummmmm er politely order mine?

Just_Greg_L

I REALLY like this idea actually... if you made a video with the release of these with no handles, and demonstrated how to make the blanks, shape them, etc. like go into detail as though you were teaching students, i would buy into this hard. learning to make handles is something i really want to learn as a lot of the tools i like to work with and restore myself are similar in their handle design. and that's one of my major boundaries in restoration. I don't know what woods I should use, finishes, etc. there's plenty out there on shaping, but what about the nitty-not-so-gritty parts? I'd say this is a good opportunity to teach.

Aaron Greene

Do you also sell the golf ball shaped hangle for giles in future?

Hahaha

Hand Tool Rescue

Of course!

Hand Tool Rescue

Can it have handles for those with mechanics impairments :D

Yoel Bittner

Can’t wait. I’ll try to get one before they’re gone

Kenneth Stephens

Looks like the most expensive bottle opener i ever bought ... and i will buy it

thanks! i needed a new impulse buy!!

Daniel Roche

I have some nice maple burl that is going to be perfect for this.

Callaway ⛳️😬

Original was beech, and yes.

Hand Tool Rescue

I must have one. I have something perfect for the scales

Christopher Woolley

Ooooh.....Maybe another collaboration with James from Wood by wright to see what he does with handle?!? Very excited to get involved with this. I will start looking in the hardwood small off cuts bin 👍👍

How does my money disappear and how much of it goes where?

Do you know what wood were the origial scales? I would just go for stained maple or beech. Also, why are the pin holes slots not holes? Is it to accommodate my rubbish drilling skills?

Hahaha, they can eat screwdrivers maybe?

Hand Tool Rescue

Yes, other size will come in the future at some point.

Hand Tool Rescue

The holy making trifecta.

Hand Tool Rescue

I will always sell the ones without handles, so do not worry.

Hand Tool Rescue

Of course!

Hand Tool Rescue

That would look crazy!

Hand Tool Rescue

oh damn!

Hand Tool Rescue

I will sell them with and without handles, so do not stress!

Hand Tool Rescue

You son of a bean. You are literally sucking money out of my families mouths. Oh well, I'M IN!

And there goes my money again!

Russell Loud

Yes, good shout, having the CAD for the scales would be very useful

Jamie (The Custom Cave) Reader

Man this thing is huge. Are you planing on making a smaller version? Maybe half the size?

Marco

That is one bigass screwdriver. I don't think I've ever encountered a screw of that size before :#

dreamer

This is awesome!!!!! Cool tool, fun project doing something new and I might just hurt myself! Trifecta! Great to see a fellow prairie boy do well!

I assume I will be able to purchase one on release day, but in case I am not able to (due to work), is there any way to reserve one for purchase?

Sphynx

I'll send you another for no charge until you are happy!

Hand Tool Rescue

I could buy two and have him make some custom handles for you, send one back. You can find him as “Green Beetle” on YouTube. He’s a good friend of mine. I could have him harden it and make scales.

Colin Wetz

I’m anxious to get in on this as I’d be upset if I messed up your good work.

Oooooo!

Hand Tool Rescue

Haha! I will always sell the DIY kits.

Hand Tool Rescue

Oh DAMN son

Hand Tool Rescue

They are the key to Narnia.

Hand Tool Rescue

I know it's not supposed to be easy, but what about a paper template for the scales with each order or maybe a file download?

Ricky Lynn

Soooooooon Precious!

Just_Greg_L

*waves money around wildly* Any chance you'd share the CAD of the scale form? I have... ideas.

Matthew Wilson

I'd suggest maple or birch (because it's light-colored and durable), and dye it after shaping so you don't have to try to get the dye to penetrate the whole volume.

Brooks Moses

Looks awesome! Now I need to hunt up some good hardwood that I can dye blue. Ideas, anyone?

Marc McKenzie

That certainly sounds quite interesting to me!

Brooks Moses

It's not was I had intended, but some wooly mammoth ivory I have might need to be used just for the sheer absurdity of it.

Eric Lee

...and I just remembered I have a giant piece of ebony and a small koa slab that would be AMAZING for this. #yaaaas

TwoRavens

Sounds Great! Always love a good project!

Would you want pictures, video, or both? I have a full woodworking shop and a forge...a crappy forge, but a forge nonetheless...

TwoRavens

I just remembered a piece of rosewood burl given to me by a good friend who grew old before he was ready. Time to slab-off a bit an see what I have!

Can't wait, would laminated hardwood/exotic hardwood scales be too plain? (like the layering of skateboards)

Ryan LaValley

I may have to wait. I would love to be part of the scale design, but I am afraid that I wouldn't finish in the timeframe given. To much going on. (School is starting here.) If there is an extra, then let me know and I will complete one. Even if I do complete one, I still NEED to get one of your final production ones, so I will be ordering another. Thanks again. Oh yeah, my wrench is on its way. I'm probably over excited. But, I like Christmas early.

Flint Buchman

I’m so going to make a live edge river table scales 🤣

Username checks out.

Want! I have a YT knifemaker friend who can make some scales for me

Colin Wetz

Here I was thinking these were interesting but I didn't need a giant short screwdriver and thus was going to wait until the next size came out, but that "build your own" project is enticing enough that I'm going to have to go ahead and get one.

Brooks Moses

My body is ready! I'd love to stick some 3D print & resin handles on that.

Jamie (The Custom Cave) Reader

Perfect tool when you need to torque the foundation to your house. Good Golly!

God I love your tools. Dual purpose! 9” wrench can be a hammer and this screwdriver can be door breaching tool. Awesomesauce !

Don't know for sure yet until we know the actually machining time in the real world. Probably around $50.

Hand Tool Rescue

That IS how ideas work.

Hand Tool Rescue

I think I have an idea.

Chad from ManCrafting™

Looks awesome! Any idea on the price for the first 100?
