1890s' Most Unnecessarily Complicated Apple Peeler [Restoration]

Some say, it's necessarily complicated.

1890s' Most Unnecessarily Complicated Apple Peeler [Restoration]

It takes way too long to change all the adjustments that I hope you are right!

Hand Tool Rescue

It didn't sell very well. Unfortunately, a typographic mix-up with a Habitrails ad ended up giving this a speed rating in "gerbals per hour".

Al Hunt

Super complicated but it is interesting that it is doing 3 operations (if I’m counting right) simply by turning a hand wheel and it is all done mechanically.

That's a really neat machine. I'm going to guess the apples were sorted by size by the time they go to these machines - probably one guy/one machine for each size grade of apple. Guy that runs it knows how to adjust it, but doesn't have to because he gets apples that are all in a pretty narrow range. Guy next to him gets bigger ones, guy on the other side gets smaller ones. Can't be too big an operation, though, else they'd be belt driven (as I think someone else mentioned). Great stuff. Thanks. Still probably hard to walk, though.

That's a beautiful thing - and great to see it in action!

William R Dougherty

Needs more big-ass bolts and cast-iron nuts. :) What a behemoth.

Dan Johnston

I'll bet Andrew Alexander @blacksmithtools doesn't need gloves to strip paint. He's just that badass.....🤠

Steve Seidel

I was dubious until I saw it work. Wow. Everything seems necessary, and very nicely built.

Old Crow Bourbon

Hahaha, yes!

Hand Tool Rescue

Clearly a high-volume industrial machine. Neat!

Peter Laws

Seems entirely necessary. How else would restoration channels exist without such things!

Planky

This looks like something you would punish an apple with in the dark ages.
