But in the manga...this clash was actually quite the disappointment. The build-up was all there, but the actual fight itself, well...

To me, the Schutzstaffel being defeated is a psychological ploy from Yhwach. If you recall earlier in the cour, Yhwach mentioned how allowing the bankai to be recovered was part of his plan to crush their sense of hope. I think the same is happening here. He makes the Zero Division think they are so clever and strong, only to devastate them. For a being who can see all possible futures, presumably allowing them to play out is probably entertaining to him.
