Now I know we're asking a few questions there in the title, but they're all linked - why didn't Renji become a Captain after TYBW? And how does it tie into his dream of surpassing Byakuya?
Does he even still want that? Let's investigate!

I think Byakuya should have died like he was supposed to. He's one of my favorites but not only is his 'death' scene depicted gloriously, it was the best, most tragic way to conclude his life. His death would have facilitated the growth of Rukia and especially Renji. Keeping Byakuya alive is, I think, the wrong move and a waste of a perfect character send-off. And it shows in how the things progress from there on out - exactly the power levels you described in the video.
