It originally was recorded and released by TSO's preceding band Savatage on their 1995 concept album Dead Winter Dead. The track was released as a single under the Savatage name in 1995 with very little success. The following year, the first TSO album was released and they included the same track on that album and released it as a single AGAIN under the TSO name and it became the holiday hit that we all know and love today!
