2025-09-22 05:01:07 +0000 UTCThis is the most brutal episode, in my opinion. Watching the house absolutely eat away at everything Olivia was is haunting. I always cite seeing Abigail's ghost as the moment Olivia truly broke. The horror of seeing Abigail's body was almost enough to snap her out of it, but then Abigail's ghost once again blurs the lines of reality - between "dreaming" and waking". We get one second where Olivia comprehends what's happening, and then Abigail's ghost once more has her questioning: "Are you awake now?" As for why the house is so evil? I don't know! If Flanagan has ever commented on why, I haven't heard. I always assumed it was because of a throw away line from Steve in the earlier episodes. He says the Hills clearly weren't afraid of the dark - that their parlor was filled with things like tarot cards and ouija boards. I imagine Poppy and Will invited Something in. (Also, can we just commend the actress who plays Poppy? She never fails to give me chills.)

Her mind was so influenced by this evil house that she was losing time as well as seeing things the house wanted her to see. The moment they walked into that house, all that evil stuck to them like gum on their shoes and kept hounding them even after leaving. She tried but she was just no match for all the mind games and fuckery it bestowed on her.

2025-09-20 18:55:09 +0000 UTCThis is one of my favorite episodes, but it is extremely hard to watch. I adore Olivia, and it breaks my heart how her love for her children is used against her. She seems to be the most "sensitive" to the house's powers, but her time there completely erased the line between reality and dreams. The fact that she was this bright, warm spirit who wanted her children to read all about different cultures and religions because of all the people they would meet and those who would "claim to have all the answers". To then be the one warped into destroying them. Olivia becomes the domino that causes all that hurt and pain, which is beyond cruel to who she was. All those signs she was seeing were the results of her own spiral. Similar to how Nellie was haunted by her own death. Also, Carla Gugino did an outstanding job of portraying Olivia as she loses her light. In the end, seeing who she used to be is another stab to the heart. I HATE Poppy with all my heart. She clearly killed her own children because she couldn't take their crying and needs, made up a delusion to "fix" her terrible actions, but then SPREAD IT. Continuing to feed people to the house is just... Mrs Duddley was kind in only calling her insane.

Mentally tortured by a sexy great gatsby ass ghoul into thinking I have to kill my kids?? Can I get a little peace please The young twins recounting to their mother the future horrors they will endure because of this house was particularly horrifying… seeing baby Luke talk about his drug abuse like that ☹️☹️☹️

That being said, miss poppys actress needs her flowers omg.. her taunting Liv at the end where you can see how much she's delighting in causing the destruction of this innocent family? She's SICKKKKKKK and that character needs her ass beat! She plays opposite his then-wife Courtney Bell who was her real-life best friend. They play sisters and their chemistry was something wholly unseen by me in a horror film up to that point. Really, their amazing performances are what moved me to tears, I think. Something else, as I've already stated here before, that was new to me with a horror film (MULHOLLAND DRIVE, TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME, THE CRUCIBLE, MELANCHOLIA and ANTICHRIST are the only other times it had happened before, all for different reasons).

The entire Crain family felt the effects of Hill House, but no one more so than matriarch Olivia Crain, who was extra susceptible because of her repressed psychic gifts (which she explains away as migraines). Summed up, the house convinced Olivia that her family needed to die. Poppy infiltrates Olivia's mind and appeals to her overprotectiveness. Poppy convinces Olivia that her children are in danger and that she must kill them to protect them. So called "wake up". Out of all of them Oliva's is the saddest.

Also it makes sense that during Nell’s viewing when Luke asked their dad “mom didn’t kîll herself either did she?” And he said that that was a complicated question because like yes but no, though the house did fuck with her perception, she herself did jump vs when Nell did it, the house/Olivia tricked her into it. Liv willingly “woke up”

I love how well this episode shined a light on the big mystery of what exactly happened with Olivia. Once you really get to see how much the house tormented her and drove her to the extreme that it did, it just breaks your heart to pieces. That poor woman never stood a chance.

The saddest part in the end when Olivia says, “go on without me,” and Hugh replies with, “how could we?” Cause they had to find a way to do so. Then Abigail’s death was tragic in itself because adult Luke thinks she’s a figment of his imagination. This episode just puts me in my feels to cry for the finale. I look forward to it!

2025-09-19 03:21:50 +0000 UTCthe way I was so confused when you said it's time to say goodbye to the show after seeing the title cause I know the show has 10 episodes and then it clicked to me that you did a double feature...it took me a while but I got there 💀 One of the saddest parts of this show is how the Ghosts/the House noticed and felt the love that Olivia had for Hugh and their children and decided to use that against her + start to derail her mental health slowly. Especially Poppy and how she convinces her that Hugh taking the children outside or into the real world is "killing them" and tells her that her jumping off the stairs balcony would "wake her up". The fact that she was haunted by visions of her dead children breaks my heart every single person that I have watched to this show thought Abigail was a ghost and calls her bowl cut, then they feel bad when Hugh is late to save her alongside Nell and Luke 😭
