The Haunting of Hill House Episode 6

I mean what can I say... grab a box of tissues and prepare to WEEP!

Comments

“Why aren’t we running faster?” “Why are we looking over the banister?” Literally the same exact words that came out my mouth when I first watched this. I could not imagine moving that slow and my kids are literally screaming in fear lol.

Ty

Luke was the most well-adjusted & put together sibling this episode.

Urias Davis

I’m late catching up to your reactions, but omg THANK YOU for putting Hill House on your roster. I remember watching it when it first came out and how hard and deep each chapter of the family’s story hit. You put it into words during your recap seamlessly. Mr. Flanagan, you have wrecked us.

luna pumpum

Oof, I took a break after 5 and forgot ep 6 hits hard too 😫

TheeFinalGirl

hey hey 💕

Alanda

that makes me so happy, me too! (even though I really am so mf scared 😭)

Alanda

I don't have anything to add. I just wanted to say hi

Clever Girl

I just wanna say I’m really loving this experience of watching at the same time as you Alanda! This is such a great show! Seriously can’t wait to see these last 4 episodes 🤩

Omarr Kaba

I haven't watched this show since it first premiered on Netflix when miss COVID has us all trapped in the 4 walls of our houses but for me to jump back into this show again via Patreon with you and experience EVERY emotion under the sun to the same intensity as I did years ago just further reiterates the storytelling power of Flanigan! "Damn you, Flanigan" is right girl LOOL BUT this episode also has a special place in my heart because of the cinematography; can we address the like 30-MINUTE LONG ONE SHOTS - Alanda homegirl if you get on to Bly Manor or Fall of the House of Usher, I pray for us all LOOL they're just as wild and memorable as Hill House

Eric Sadhu

did you gag while editing this. because you missed the statues moving😂😂😂😂my adhd was working overtime so i noticed right away

Braven Burris

Honestly a TRAVESTY that this episode didn't get its flowers. 😭 like, the fans ate it up for sure, but it deserved more acclaim and recognition on a larger scale.

Jonah

I want Alanda to watch Hush SO BAD. That movie did a number on my blood pressure, the SUSPENSE! Before I wake was also incredible. I saw it once and then forced my friends to watch it too. I haven't seen any other Flanagan films but I know that I definitely need to.

Jonah

GIrl, this show wasn't nominated for ANY awards other than a couple MTV Movie & TV Awards (bleh) and one Writers Guild Awards. This episode alone should've paved the way for the show to sweep every award show in every category.

travytypo

I cry every single time I watch this 😭

Abbey

I drew the line at episode 5 but now

Liam Rendos

Why did I wake up today and see they're releasing a Bent Neck Lady Funko Pop?!

Zombies_Are_Real

Poor Nelly wasn't even center of attention at her own wake 😭 had to throw her own casket

a cup of cait

Presumably, you're now a Mike Flanagan fan and we're gonna get you reacting to his entire filmography? Absentia (2011, one of the first horror films to ever make me cry. Like Hill House, deals with themes of grief. His first, low budget film announced him as a great talent, with his signature empathy and human characters already on display). FILM Oculus (2013) FILM Hush (2016) FILM Before I Wake (2016) FILM Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016) FILM Gerald's Game (2017, Stephen King's "unfilmable novel" is now a Flanagan masterpiece, with Carla Gugino carrying the entire film as a one-woman show) FILM Doctor Sleep (the quite frankly AMAZING sequel to one of horror's greatest, and scariest, films of all-time, The Shining) FILM The Haunting of Bly Manner (2020) SERIES Midnight Mass (2021) SERIES The Midnight Club (2022) SERIES The Fall of the House of Usher (2023, a very good argument as to why, if you ARE going to watch his entire filmography on your channel *please do* I think that you should do it in order of productions, as Usher culminates a decade of his work, almost as a bookend, with nearly all of his troupe of returning performers returning in some of the juiciest roles of their careers *SEVERAL people here deserved Emmys* It feels like an exclamation mark on all the themes he's explored thus far, and marks the end of his partnership with Netflix / that era of his career *their relationship soured* It's my personal favorite of...maybe everything he's done. A wild, gory, sassy, vicious, scary and incredibly written / performed masterpiece that reinvents Poe for the modern age.) SERIES The Life of Chuck (2024) FILM Carrie (2026) SERIES

Justin Lafleur

Gurl, we are ALL excited for your reaction to ep 7. And no, I did not cry. I SOBBED. How tf you managed to keep it together I'll never know. Herculean strength. Also, understand that you'll be doing Chucky after Hill House but will you be doing Bly and/or any other Flanagan shows?

Nyssa Rawther 🍉

I'm sure this episode gets taught in film classes. The writing and acting are top tier, but then to make most of the scenes one shots is just Mike Flanagan secretly flexing!

Zombies_Are_Real

I thought the ending was so sad when you hear the voice over of young Nell saying none of them could see her and we see her ghost, like shes trying to reach out or something. Plus there was a ghost you missed, when Liv started to look for Nell, the first room she goes into, the lady statue is looking forward but when she exits the room, the statue is now looking at her, i only noticed it when watching your reaction video and I've watched this show tons of times 😂

Zach Boardman

I’m a puddle of tears 😭 How can you look so pretty while crying and here I am ugly crying?

Brandy Henry

A “Midnight mass” reaction would be very nice. I think you would love it🥰

Rebecca Bertrand

How I wish you could continue watching the rest of the Flanagan shows after Hill House... And the movies too!

Nat B

CINEMA!! 👏 So sorry you had to go through this 🫶

Alex D

kevin and his blown back wig asking “who’s the bent neck lady????” is always so funny to me 💀 the way/time in which he told shirley he took the royalties was fucking batshit crazy but goddamn if it isn’t proof he fits right in with the Calamity Crains LMAO

Alex Manning

the twins and olivia are genuine emotional devastation that i can never get used to lmao

Alex Manning

I cannot believe I'm here getting re-traumatized 🫥

Lou Greed

I’m so sorry you had to go through this. Thoughts and prayers. 😭🙈

Ty Best

literally one of my fav eps of the show!!!! ABSOLUTE CINEMA!!! 🤌🏾

Ryan

As a child who was traumatized and went to my parents and was told not to say anything to not cause "drama" for the family and I was around 8-9 and then to continue being told I was such an "emotional child" while being named after my father's sister who died taking her own life, but nobody ever just talked about her life...I deeply resonated with Nellie just feeling also like I was screaming and no one heard and wanting to help my family and always being that person. My parents now consistently tell me how it's amazing how kind I am to everybody and how proud they are and that they do not take full part in me turning out that way since it was me just being exactly what I feel like I needed as a child (now for my daughter and everyone around me). I feel like that's a lot of what Nell is in this story. There's truly a character for everyone, or multiple.

Janet Michelle

Well all I can say is I really enjoyed crying with you this episode! This episode put me through it!

Josh

Also seeing Alanda cry was surprisingly hard. Made me cry harder.

Allison

It took me several viewings of this show before I was ready to deal with the psychology of Steven. He pisses me off so badly for the way he treats his entire family, but this episode always reminds me just how deeply he loves his siblings, particularly the twins. He's lived in denial for so long, however, rationalizing away everything that happened, he just has no bandwidth for anything that might cause that denial to ebb. That's why he chases hauntings, much like John Cusack's character in 1408, because he is SO haunted by his own life he's compelled to debunk the hauntings of others. Anything to ensure the denial remains unbroken. There are no ghosts but the ones we create for ourselves, psychic echoes of hurt and disappointment. He's the eldest and thus holds the majority of the memories of his mother. You can see from him always wanting to help Hugh that he idolized his father. He promised to protect his siblings and routinely failed due to circumstances unbeknownst to him, yet he internalized those failures. He was determined to make his father the boogeyman he had seen but then suppressed. Steve is an asshole, yes, but he is perhaps the saddest character to me. The others have moments of joy, no matter how fleeting, but Steven rationalizes everything, seeks to explain everything, but rarely allows himself to feel anything. When he expresses even a fraction of his true anger outside of sarcasm, he's almost always on the verge of tears. And the only answers he wants and will accept are those which will buttress his denial, even though his subconscious is screaming at him to pay attention. DEVASTATING.

Aidan Halliwell

They ain’t lost the plot yet! 😭 idk how we can top this show during spooky season!

Quinn

i can get through a lot of the show w/o crying but the twins are gonna get me every tiiimee /:

Trevein Walton

yes! if you think abt it steve saw nellie in his apartment when she died and thats probably not the first thing hes seen. i think he truly thinks its all in his head so he blames his visions on being raised in a "crazy" family

nathan h

One of the best episodes of television ever, in my opinion.

Allison

The fact that most of it is long tracking shots is amazing.

Connor Castle-Boulay

Y’all- a monsoon started when I put this on. What a blessing.

Adam Steilen

I was wondering the same thing about the statues!

Shay Tuck

I know everyone raves about episode 5 because of the Bent Neck Lady reveal but if this isn't just one of the best episodes of television I've ever seen. Big props to the cinematography on this one. The way this episode looks like a continuous one shot. I believe I read that this whole episode was 5 different shots? Amazing. Nell's ending monologue destroyed me. And yes I still cry no matter how many times I've seen this episode.

Daniela Sannino

BIG WOLF?! RED GLOWING EYES!? 👁️ 👄 👁️

Joe

Yay so excited for this. Let me grab my kleenex

La Toya Sheri

Wait. Is that why Steve writes other people’s stories and pretends he has none of his own? Because he CAN see and he DOES have his own stories? But he’s in denial cuz they’re so terrifying so he just wants to ignore them? This poor family. My lord.

Joe

Poor Nellie. You mean to tell me from the time she was a little kid, she’s been having to deal with this haunted bullshit? I can’t. This is awful. This poor family.

Joe

alright....just got home, packed a bowl and made my shirley temple drink....let's do this

Joe

The fall of house usher is probably one of the worst series on Netflix

Bravo Six

God! This was always my favourite episode but I’m still surprised it can make me so emotional 😭 you’re reaction 🫶🏼one of the best episodes of television you get it!!! I’m so sorry you had to go through this girl, but I’m so happy you love the show!! This being 90% an episode on familial trauma over haunting, and the haunting we do get is NELL trying to stop them from fighting!! 😫 “I was right here, the whole time. None of you could see me. Nobody could see me.” Destroys me.

Daniel McGuinness

This is THE episode. It’s so beautiful and raw. I still cry every time I watch this one, even now watching it through you. Did you catch the statues heads turning in the upstairs hallway when you were editing?

Vicki M

Masterpiece....I hope you get to react to Midnight Mass and The Fall of the House of Usher, both great.

Michael Instone

I don't know if it was on purpose but young Nell saying that she was right there and they couldn't see her with the shot of ghost Nell is kind of reflective. I mean after her husband died, we the viewer see how Nell struggles, but her siblings don't. They don't see her even though she is right there. Prime example is the interactions Nell has with Theo and Steve that we are shown. No, they weren't the best interactions, but it felt off. I don't know if that is supposed to draw that sort of parallel, but it did for me.

Vladomyr Blue

if you seen something in the background and your not sure it was more than likely a ghost. they are hidden throughout episodes this season.

Daijah

They gave us such a gift with this masterpiece

Joanna Bettelheim

For another James Lafferty appearance in a Flanagan project, I HIGHLY recommend Oculus (movie, not series). It’s got some similar timeline jumbling and “come for the screams, leave crying” vibes.

Joanna Bettelheim

We can’t really fault them for avoiding her that last day as far as not answering the phone, though. Steve and Shirley were basically in work meetings and Steve called back later and said he’d be around the next day if she wanted to talk. Who among us has answered every single call from a family member?

Joanna Bettelheim

I hope you get into the Alien franchise one day!! Alien: Earth is a cool tv show so far. I’m excited to see where they go with it. Lot of great ideas❤️

Jorble

This show is why I’m so excited for his Carrie tv show on prime! I hope he’ll give Carrie a loving found family or write her a beautiful ending❤️ ALSO I hope we see his I Know What You Did Last Summer tv show be made one day

Jorble

House of Usher might be my favorite but I can't deny that Hill House is masterpiece! I can only hope he strikes gold with Carrie, too.

RC Flores

I am here, empty cup in hand, bawling my eyes out

Kadiesha

I have cried so much with this episode but this time it was you that brought me to tears. Watching you go through the motions was heartbreaking but beautiful (the way you pick up on every character’s emotion). I know people will mention how this episode is basically five long shots, but I have to mention it too because the actors and crew did AMAZING! The way they kept the emotions raw and all worked together phenomenally: applause!

Ana Fox

not Zephyr is Beyonse Knowles female pop vocalist 😭

Dana (Dah-Nah)

I got this on DVD last year for the knowledge that I own it, and also to eventually watch with the commentary, I miss DVD commentary tracks!

Joanna Bettelheim

This show! THIS SHOW! A masterpiece. It is an absolute crime that this show wasn't nominated for any Emmys or other awards. A travesty. There is such a bias against "horror" and anything that falls under that genre. This series is incredible in every way, and it's just wrong that it wasn't recognized.

Lavender Violet

There are so many sad moments in this series, but there's something about the tragedy of Nell, who felt so alone before her death, standing as an unseen specter in front of her own body/family while the voice of her younger self says "none of you could see me" that is extra heartbreaking. The moment with Steve breaking down when he sees Nell's body is another one that gets me. Denial is so big for him involving anything and everything relating Hill House and the hauntings that ripple through the lives of the Crane family, so him saying he 'wasn't sure what that was' about his emotional reaction to his dead little sister made me wanna tear up. (Which isn't hard to do with this show overall, honestly.)

LurkingTrashPanda

This is hands down one of the best episodes of television ever.

RiffRanger

"She buried it so deep, she had to make up a monster just to compartmentalize and cope. And she did such a good job that she planted him right in my head. [...] She just needed help, and no one was listening. And it's so much like Nellie." - Theodora Craine in Touch episode 3

Nikki

This episode always makes me cry. And the longshots are amazing!

Erica J

Best episode of TV in the last two decades. Perfection. Yes I did cry, again.

Leon Watts

And I’ll do it. This episode stays on my mind 7 years later

Nikki

I'm here, iced vanilla latte in hand, ready to watch along and Cry

Kadiesha

I'm sure she will do that one after Chucky, Chucky was the second most voted on the poll. I'm so excited for her to do that sad they couldn't do a fourth season but at least a new movie is coming to continue the story cause the cliffhanger is insane. And the director has talked about possibly bringing back Andy's mother and mike back for the first time since the first film Crazy! Gagged

The Cinema With James

Please do Midnight Mass; it's another masterpiece from Mike Flannigan

Leigh Harrison

I would definitely get this on physical media. It’s a statement to Flanagans talent and the way he got everyone, cast and crew, to see his vision. I feel like even people who don’t like horror should be watching this…

K Monroe

You gotta put The Fall of the House of Usher on your radar. It's like a messy billionaire family soap opera where one of the family members gets Final Destination'd at the end of every episode. Iconic.

misery (the pig) 🐖

The way I relate to Nell on so many levels... I was sobbing so hard at the end. I was right here, but nobody could see me.

Roman Chayok

My favorite episode!!! Can’t wait to get home and watch

Nikki

"I was right here and nobody could see me. Nobody could see me" That scene broke me. This whole episode broke me 😥

Christopher Nicholas

When they're all standing around Nell's dead body trying to assign blame to eachother whilst they ALL ACTIVELY AVOIDED HER when she needed them most (aside from Luke, bby was in rehab) 😭 And they're STILL avoiding her now! They couldn't see her, she was right there the whole time and nobody could see her.

Jonah

it’s such a silly thing but i can never thank you enough for this, experiencing hill house all over again with new eyes and a new voice always brings another perspective and this show has so many facets to talk about.

Alex Manning

the way nell stays so entirely selfless, even in death, makes this so much more devastating. she truly was doing her best to help them listen to each other and be there for each other, the glue that tried so hard to keep the family together. her story is one of the most tragic tales on television and the way both victoria and violet embodied that entirely was really something special. violet’s delivery at the end always makes me cry because i’ve been that child. such a fucking special series.

Alex Manning

This is a MASTER CLASS of TV. Everything from the incredible long takes (the longest being like 17 minutes), to the various depictions of grief, the fact that the episode is basically just people talking yet it never ever manages to lose you, it keeps you engaged the entire time. Sure there are subtle scares, but you feel tense for completely other reasons throughout. An all timer, for real.

Simone

Every episode has so many layers of heartbreak that something different stands out to me on each watch. This time it was Shirley's face through the entire foyer argument right through to finding the buttons. Elizabeth Reaser is such a fantastic actress. Oh and little baby Nellie scared and twirling around through the same room she was dancing through on the night she died? and then seeing her own hanged corpse and not even knowing it?? I'm gonna be SICK 💔😭 Great reaction as always, I can't IMAGINE watching this right after Dangerous Animals, what a rollercoaster!

lee

I know Flanagan said he'd never do a one take(s) like this again, it's way too much work, but why mess with perfection when you nailed it the first time tbh.

Kate

My favourite episode. so beautifully shot, perfectly interwoven. This family’s story is so tragic, god…

Daniel McGuinness

i feel like the show really had a huge drop off in quality from this episode on. like the first 5 eps had structure and it felt like once they got through each of the siblings stories, they didnt know what to do. shouldve ended after episode 5 or maybe 6

Jess

Not sia 😂😂

Tlemona

Wait whoa hold up...Alanda singing Subway at the end?? We, the patrons, request a cover pls 🥹 😭😭

Tlemona

What an interesting episode to watch while working at a funeral home 🤣

Jonah

Girl dont shes gonna block you LMFAOO

Julien

THE CAMERA WORK IN THIS EPISODE, I freak out over the continuous shots every time I watch this episode 😩 Damn. This show is cinema done right. Pure art. I highly reccomend watching the behind the scenes available for the making of this episode.

Jonah

even after all these years my mind is still blown that this was mostly done in long one takes, besides the obvious cuts like when they go from the funeral home to the hill house with the chandelier falling (damn you Sia!) Nellie making her coffin fall (at least that's how I always understood it) to make the family stop fighting and then her saying she was right there but no one could see her makes me sooooob

world of tinashe

If Alanda thinks this is the business of misery, no Paramore, just wait until we get around to “The Haunting of Bly Manor” and the absolute TRAVESTY that show entails! 🫩🪭

Safi Musgrove

the long shots in this episode are incredible, you're right it definitely feels like a play! and yes girl, i cried, i was bawling the whole damn time 😂 can't wait for the next one! ❤

Kelly T

I'll have you know that's my wife Kate Siegel, thee bisexual queen 🛐❤️‍🔥

Tlemona

This is for sure my favorite episode. The long shots and the transitions from the funeral parlor to hill house are perfection.

laura

okay i just finished the episode and every time it never fails to make me cry... nellie was just trying to get her family to STOP FIGHTING and be with each other 😭 ALSO FUCK STEVE

soggytacos

Lysaida Romero

ALANDAAAAAAAAA "WE TOOK THE MONEY" shook me on the same levels of "YOU WEREN'T ON THE FREAKING PLANE" 😭😭😭

soggytacos

mike flanagan needs his ass ATE w this episode…..

gabriel

“ I was screaming and jumping and yelling and none of you saw me, why couldn’t you see me?!” Like OUCH that hits way too close to home like☹️💔 I literally relate tew much sksksksk my mom was literally getting onto me the other day about me “not caring” about my appearance and things because I have a couple dental problems & I haven’t gotten my hair done and it’s way overdue, etc. and she blames everything on me being “lazy” and it’s like…I am quite literally fighting for my life every day & struggling to grasp at something to keep pushing get off my BACK & be of actual benefit to me😭😭😭 the signs are always there and no one could/would see them. Nellie was literally spiraling & everyone was just like “well you know Nell she crazy and her life sucks” like HELLOOOO?!?! Even a check in makes a major difference, don’t have to have a full blown conversation but text her, let her know y’all are there for her like she literally lost the love of her life, she should’ve never been alone like ever

bribricutie3

i JUST noticed that the first 15 mins was all one take! AHHHHHH! EDIT: omg most of the scenes were one takes!

tallasianchick

YESSS!! I remember everything up to this episode so this might be like a fresh watch.

Pierre Brown

I'm having a stressful day of work. Can't wait to come back later and watch this tonight with a fun drink 🍷

Kadiesha

Rio Fermo

Another blunt rolled for this rollercoaster of a ride. 😭

Jesus Garcia

Literally woke up crying so yaaayyyy can’t wait to cry about this show instead because yeah😀😀😀 show>>>> actual real life😭😭😭 this episode always makes my chest hurt because even in the midst of her death & fucking VIEWING Nell still can’t get her siblings attention and that’s just crazy bruh😭😭😭 and the last scene like ugh our BABY LUKE☹️☹️☹️

bribricutie3

Alanda, you’re a witch because why did I literally just casually check to see if my faves posted and think to myself, “I can't wait to see Alanda’s reaction to the next episode of ‘[The Haunting of] Hill House,’” and then here it appears. WITCH! 🫵🏾 Now, let me fix my meal and prepare, because the directing/editing in THIS HERE EPISODE…

Safi Musgrove

Having a long stopover at an airport has never been so exciting thanks to Alanda ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 I will be crying in public by the end of this 🙂‍↕️

Joel Amatore

Thank goodness it’s a slow day at the funeral home today. Getting paid to watch Miss Parker🤭

Deejennay

This episode is truly just a masterpiece in film making, heartbreakingly beautiful 🔥

Dylan Krolicki

Well I'll have to spend my data on this. I'm at work rn and there's NO WAY I'm missing your reaction to like one of my all time favorite episodes of anything. I wonder how much you'll cry cuz that first time (and every time after) I was a mess. Except that first time I was also terrified cuz I am terrified of thunderstorms and that added a lever of fear to the one shot-ness of it all.

December Vesalius

my amazon package is about to be at the door and then i got a notification for this… what more can i ask for?

Ky

O M G exactly what I needed to make this work day bearable! Thank you!!
