It loosely adapted stuff from the manga (namely the Expedition, Maws of Death, and Pirate destroyer arcs) but had its own story overall. The Cookie short “Lazy River” played before it in theaters. In general, this movie is one of the more well preserved pieces of Boaroton media outside of the original manga and 2003 anime, the 1989 and 1993 OVAs are still pretty rare though, as are the snes games.
