Halfway Broken 100-101

Alright! Second half of One Piece: Halfway Broken for the month! In this case, unusually, it's the slightly smaller half. That's entirely because the release on the 1st was around 8,500 words. Meaning that, even with this one only being around 7,500, we're still hitting 16,000 for the month. So, in total, actually on the larger side.

Anyway, these chapters feature a first date for Vivi, some interesting (I hope) bit interaction with King Cobra, more training, and their arrival at Weatheria. I have to admit to some major frustration with that last bit. I'd intended to make Weatheria an entire arc, but was deeply disappointed when I ultimately discovered just how little we know about the place. I went looking for literally every single reference the wiki gives to manga chapters, and came up so near-totally blank that I realized I...just can't do much with it. We literally know more about Tequila Wolf and Little East Blue than we do about Weatheria. Which is maddening.

Instead, Weatheria is only going to be a short stop, with Nami and one or two others traveling back to the island from time to time. Well, regularly, actually. But I'll only cover it in snippets. Much the same way that Nojiko will be returning to Drakestone somewhat regularly to learn from Neethrax. Instead, the crew will be moving on to a couple of the other canon islands from the timeskip, in particular Rusukaina. Which will offer greater training opportunities for more of the crew.

That's the plan, anyway.

Now! As usual, waffles are disgusting and pancakes are superior (Just seeing who is paying attention, even if it's true. Waffles are pancakes that were captured by Dark Forces, taken in fel places and tortured with Iron and Fire. Twisted and deformed from fluffy goodness to crunchy horrors. Their only hope of becoming less evil is by being baptized to new life via sugar. Even then, a relationship with them is bad for you.). Also, the new content is attached to this post in the various different formats, and new master files with the entire story will be added to the Pinned Post shortly. Author's notes will follow in the comments when I have a few moments to actually write them :-). Enjoy more of One Piece: Halfway Broken!

P.S. Vivi Art pieces this time are both AI generations. The third image is the wiki image for Weatheria, just for reference.

Oh boy, Hancock… Considering that Luffy and his crew freed the slaves from Sabaody, Luffy killing one of the 5 Elder Stars AND Rayleigh vouching for him… Hancock BETTER give him and his some leeway though if she finds out about his relationship with several of the women on his crew… Yeah, I totally get his apprehension regarding her. BEHAVE MISSY! Edit 1: After “farther” calculations… After “further” calculations… Edit 2: If it was, “then they lack of navigation certainties would be laughable easily overcome by sheer chance.” If it was, “then the lack of navigation certainties would be laughably easy to overcome by sheer chance.” (?) The Foreign Traveler

Yeah, no. That only makes it worse. The average map of the Grand Line looks like this: https://static1.dualshockersimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/one-piece-map.jpg With the makers filling up the whole grand line with just the island we know about, rather than scaling the thing to make sense.

Novus Peregrine

So part of the wierdness of the map is that the one piece world is estimated to be much larger than earth. Fans aren't sure by how much and oda refuses to say but estimates run anywhere from 2 times to 500 times bigger than earth with the grand line being as much as a million kilometers in circumference.

Mr Fox

...Fair point.

Novus Peregrine

I don’t get my Luffy is confused about liking cannons. Bitches Love Cannons. Everyone knows that! ;P

WhatAFungi

All waffles are more crispy/crunchy than the glory that is pancakes. That's what happens when you torture perfectly good pancake batter with a hot iron until it's scared for the rest of its existence...

Novus Peregrine

Yeah, that's part of why I stuck the thought in there that it was Spiritual Shenanigans as work with the Wind Knot. It's just too similar to the Haki knots. Both storying energy of different types in a tied rope knot to be released later? Sounds like two different groups discovering the same trick and storing different things. Something which might help Kaya improve on the Ofuda that she's using...

Novus Peregrine

I'm glad you liked it :-). I'm actually not entirely sure what to do with the remaining three islands (You forgot about Brook's ;-)), as none of them offer much for the crew. I was never impressed with Usopp's pop greens (which is part of why I've been upgrading his ammo in other ways), Brook's adventure was non-specific enough visiting the islands would mostly be to smash the group that enslaved him, and Franky isn't around. Vegapunk's island MIGHT be useful for Luffy, Usopp, and Pagaya...maybe...kinda. It's a bit dubious, honestly, as none of them really focus on pure traditional tech.

Novus Peregrine

Huh. So, with the ridiculous power that Buggy's formula has (wiping out an entire row of stone houses with a cannon ball sized shot), it's conceivable it might actually work in a 12.7mm round. Good to know :-p. It certainly should in the shoutgun shells he's making, since those I was picturing an 8 gauge/bore, which are about 21.2 mm. A brutal kick...if the vast majority of that kick wasn't being absorbed by an impact dial... Thanks for the information!

Novus Peregrine

Not...really? The problem with Uta is that while SHE is canon, her movie isn't, and I'm not particularly inclined to make it canon in my version either. So the amount of information we have on what she's up to is nearly zero...

Novus Peregrine

I see you figured out where I got the inspiration for Usopp's new armaments :-p. Those gauntlets, in fact, essentially ARE Ember Celica. As for the Scythewell, he IS studying a combat style that uses a bayoneted rifle as a mix of quarter staff and spear... As for the round, that's not quite what I was going for. RPG's don't use a solid core penetrator, but use a shaped charge to melt a copper (or similar) metal, turning it into a high velocity stream of metal that has reached superplasticity. i suspect such isn't possible with any currently known explosive. But to that, look to the absolutely ludicrous damage that Buggy Balls do. A single cannon ball sized explosive able to completely erase an entire row of stone houses. The sort of punch a modern naval canon might have, out of a cannon ball. Something which he DOES have mini versions of, too. So, extrapolating with a much more powerful explosive...

I'm guessing they're probably not hitting that level until the end of the timeskip. Novus said that consistent access to his Awakened form would put Luffy on even footing with an Admiral, who are all a step below the Yonko. Based on that and Canon!Luffy's progression, I'd assume the same for Yamato, and I'd expect that advanced Haki techniques will be the other part of the equation to push one or both of them to Yonko level. Given that Luffy's awakened form is proving recalcitrant, I don't remember Yamato even being mentioned as working towards awakening, and the advanced Haki training will presumably require an extended training session from Rayleigh followed by even more practice, I doubt they'll hit Yonko level for at least a year, and my guess is around the time Garp steps down (for narrative reasons if nothing else). As for now, I'd estimate they're comfortably above most Vice Admirals, maybe around the level of the Tobiroppo.

Now Usopp needs to attach a collapsible scythe to his rifle and start wearing a red, hooded cloak. Then again, he could also put shotguns in his new gauntlets instead... Regarding the ammunition question, my military knowledge is rather scattershot (no pun intended), but here's what I've got. A bit of Wikipedia searching has turned up the Raufoss Mk 211 .50 BMG round, which looks like it might be similar to what you're talking about as a scaled down explosive penetrator. There's no way it's punching a head-sized hole through 2m of granite, though; it looks like it's intended to penetrate light vehicular armor and still be able to injure crew. Assuming you're picturing a shaped-charge penetrator, something like a Javelin missile, that level of power isn't packing into an anti-materiel round, at least not using the same mechanism of action. If nothing else, the mass of metal required for the penetrator alone is likely orders of magnitude greater than the total mass of an anti-materiel round.

twilightwanderer

Decided to do a reread and found out I forgot Uta was introduced way back in the beginning. Are there any plans of her coming back into the story?

Dylan Pomes

The smallest HEAT warhead that i'm aware of is sized for 12G shotgun shells — the USMC tested them back in 2004. The closest available in .50 Browning is the Raufoss, which is a high-explosive armour-piercing incendiary round, but not a shaped charge — it's a tungsten carbide penetrator with a bunch of RDX in the nose and an incendiary tip. 18.5mm vs 12.7mm isn't really a stretch given the local technology, though.

Celti B.

Good point in the Author note about Hancock. Fun chapters. Glad the relationships are moving on. Really curious what level Luffy and Yamato are at now. Presumably still weaker than people like Yonko or Garp. But they cant be that far off. Kinds hard to estimate properly.

Daemonioros

Thanks for the update, this one was packed! I loved the training focus, everyone is getting so strong already! I’m so excited to see people’s reactions to how fucking powerful every member of the Strawhat crew has become after two entire years of training xD Looking forward to Rusukaina and Torino Kingdom :) I’m really enjoying the additional depth you bring to canon islands, and how you always find ways to make each island useful for as many crewmates as possible. The only places left canonically after that are Vegapunk’s labs and Hercules’ carnivorous plant island right? Those should be awesome too!

Camille

I totally forgot about the weather knots. It would be wild if Oda some how brought them back up with the egg head haki knots.

PlagueSpreader64

Which evil country has crunchy waffles? Ours are soft and fluffy goodness usually :D
