Eun-myeong and Ae-sun are walking to school, they pause mid-conversation to salute the national flag on the school grounds. In late 20th-century Korea, saluting the flag was an important way to emphasize national identity and patriotism. During the military regimes (1960s–1980s), it was considered both a civic duty and a matter of etiquette. People would stop immediately to salute whenever the national flag appeared on TV while walking on the street. My parents’ generation did this on school grounds every Monday morning, and when I was in elementary and middle school, we saluted the flag in our classrooms. However, by the time I reached high school, this practice had mostly disappeared, and nowadays, younger generations are largely unfamiliar with it. Busang-gil’s close acquaintance, a woman named Misuk, was once caught dancing at a dance hall in her younger days. Actor Choi Dae-hoon delivered an outstanding performance in this work, playing the role of Busang-gil. As a result, he was recognized for his acting skills and received his first acting award. In other words, this project marked his first notable achievement and served as the opportunity for him to make a name for himself as an actor. Through this role, he rose to the ranks of renowned supporting actors. Additionally, Chae Seo-an, who played the young version of Busang-gil’s wife, revealed that after filming this drama in 2023 and before its release in March 2025, she worked at a factory and a CCTV company. She said that while working there, she struggled with whether to continue pursuing her acting career. In Korea, there are three most prestigious universities: Seoul National University, Korea University, and Yonsei University. Together, these three are called “SKY universities.” For example, people might say, “My goal is to get into a SKY university.” or “You have to go to Sky University to say that you are good at studying.” In the line, “If she gets into one of the top three universities, I’ll buy you a three-bedroom apartment in Seoul. For anything less, a two-bedroom instead,” the “top three universities” refers to the SKY universities, and the exam slip that Jenny’s mother showed listed Yonsei University. In the past, private tutoring was illegal in Korea because the government wanted to reduce educational gaps between students, limit excessive academic pressure, and control the private tutoring market. Many students relied on private lessons, which made school inequality worse and increased stress. Banning tutoring was meant to keep education fair and focused on public schools. In Korea, when a person is in a romantic relationship or married, they use the honorifics “Ahbeonim” (father) or “Eomeonim” (mother) to address their partner’s parents. These terms can also be used when speaking to a friend’s parents or respectfully to an elder. It’s a way of showing politeness and respect. In this scene, Yeong-beom called Gwan-sik “Ahbeonim” (father) because he liked Geum-myeong and wanted to leave a good impression on her father as well. However, Gwan-sik remembered that Yeong-beom had shown interest in Geum-myeong before, so he felt uncomfortable. That’s why he reacted by saying, “Why am I your father?”

Fun Facts: Jenny (IU's student) is the same actress who played the little girl in Train To Busan (she was so young and also she is a big IU fan) Chief's/Ex-Chief's Now Wife is the actress who played Woosik's mother in Parasite Also...it seems like Geum Yeong (now IU) and Yeong Beom (my beloved and an amzing actor Jun Young) have been dating for some time now because if you remember in one of the previous episodes they were talking that it was his last night before he leaves for military and they were near a motel....seems like now he returned and he was waiting to see her with flowers.....culturally....when you are dating you address your partner's parents as "father/mother" (honorifics) that's why he called him "father" but seems like either Gwanshik doesn't know they are dating or doesn't like the idea lol (but I don't know why she ignored her in the car) But uri Yeong Beomiieee looks like a sweet cutie patootie...I like him hahaah (baised) waiting for the next episode...now all episodes will be a first time watch for me too
